That Saturday we stayed in and baked an Apple Pie, using it at the same time as motive for our Project pictures.

Hälften in dünne Scheiben schneiden.
backen.
The classic German apple torte, a soft shortcrust pastry filled with cooking apples (I used Golden Noble, an heirloom variety), plump raisins and almonds and thin layer of lemon glaze - perfect for cake and coffee after that long walk in the autumn forest. The recipe for this BEST APPLE CAKE EVER is from my aunt Martha (not that one), my Grandmother's twin sister.

Sweet and juicy Tarte Tatin - i'm in love with this lovely cake.
See the next photo of the lake? THis is how it looked to the naked eye. That's my Tante, she's making us apfelkuchen tonight.

Lovely day with our friends Richard and Cris visiting. They arrived about 11am and we chatted away for a couple of hours, then sat down to eat the stew I prepared yesterday. After lunch, we decided to go for a walk before having our dessert - so walked through Greenwich Park and down to the river, in beautiful sunshine. Couldn't believe how high the tide was - at other times it's a good 12 feet or so below this level.
Funnily enough, we have seen it almost this high just once before - and it was when we were out for a walk with the same friends. Cris got a bit caught out this time, and ended up having to jump up onto the railings along the path to avoid the water - unfortunately after it had already pretty much filled her shoes. It was so funny though, I couldn't help but laugh. A lot.
Came back to the flat and ate the delicious dessert that Cris had made and brought with her - an apfelkuchen glazed in salted honey. Yum. They headed off back home afterwards and Tim and I settled in for a peaceful evening.
We had a piece of apple tart and a cup of Rooibos creamed caramel tea this afternoon.

yeah, I've been baking like crazy... the in-laws just have too many apples in their garden. Again, for the German speakers, this is the recipe for this pretty tasty cake. I melted some 85% chocolate and dribbled it on top.

My "breakfast" of kuchen and coffee.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the selections at McCafe. The apfelkuchen was filled with juicy apple slices and a thin layer of cake. The baked cheesecake was unexpectedly light and the sweetness level was just right. Yum!

A juicy slice of apple pie filled with tender slices of apples. No fillers! I love the thin layer of cake for the crust too.
QUICK APPLE CAKE
Whisk 150g butter 1 egg and add 150g of sugar, small cup of milk. Then add 300g of flour mixed with half table spoon of baking powder, and finally a little grated lemon peel. Divide the dough into two parts, one part add a tablespoon of cocoa and mix well. Peel 500g apples and cut them into thin slices. Round 24 cm diameter mold, greased butter, leave some in the fridge and sprinkle with bread crumbs, put on the bottom the apple slices, sprinkle with the chopped walnuts and raisins and sprinkle with 4 tablespoons sugar mixed with cinnamon (or spice for apple pie). Pour over the apples first dark and light dough. Bake at 180 ° C. When done, cool little to separate the ring, and turn around, the bottom becomes the top, so that apples are up. Sprinkle powdered sugar with vanilla.
