I was still going through folders from 2015 and found the December iPhone shots. I'd been using the iPhone 5 and the Hipstamatic app quite a bit.

This was from a friend's apartment complex when I'd gone over to visit and the sun shining on the wall of meters had attracted my eye.

Happy Wall Wednesday!

The door itself is just another glass one but the entrance to this unusual building is nearly round.

Scaffolding surround the building area of the new "Vechtmeester" apartmentcomplex in the city of Hardenberg, The Netherlands.

The "Weiße Dame" owes its name to its striking white color. The building was used as a cotton and carpet yarn spinning mill from 1911 to 1994.

In 2024, the building has been transformed into a beautiful apartment complex.

Seen in gardens of an apartment complex in Sydney. There were around 18 trees all in the one area.

This is Chinese tallow, also known as candleberry tree.

Unfortunately, Chinese tallow has escaped cultivation to form dense thickets on roadsides, creek banks, pasture boundaries and bushland.

It is fast-growing, extremely hardy and I learned that it is able to alter the chemical composition of the surrounding soil and waterways which is harmful to both native flora and fauna. It holds Priority Weed status here in NSW, especially on the North coast.

Spread is primarily through seeds dispersed by birds.

The appeal of beautiful autumn/winter foliage is great, but do developers and landscape architects not research environmental weed risks before planting?

After the Great War (1914 - 1918), higher costs of living and the "servant problem" made living in the grand mansions and villas built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras a far less practical and attractive option for both those looking for new housing, and those who lived in big houses. It was around this time, in answer to these problems, that flats and apartments began to replace some larger houses, and became fashionable to live in.

This very stylish Art Deco block of flats would have suited those of comfortable means who could afford to live in East Melbourne (the suburb in which these flats are located), and dispense with the difficulties of keeping a large retinue of staff.

This block has a wonderful entranceway with geometric Jazz Age designs to either side of the entrance and around the stairwell windows. The stairwell area itself with its stepped roofline has been made an architectural feature as it stands out from the rest of the block's facade. This block of flats is typical of the Art Deco architecture that came out of England after the war. They are as chic today as when they were first built in the 20s or early 30s.
