The Apache Trail in Arizona was a stagecoach trail that ran through the Superstition Mountains. It was named the Apache Trail after the Apache Indians who originally used this trail to move through the Superstition Mountains.

An Apache AH-64 of the British Army in action in one of the UK`s Operational Training Areas,in this case Otterburn,Northumberland.The exercises give the crews and ground crew opportunities to operate in the wilds in a real enviroment while the aircrew get the chance to use their M230 Chain Gun which hangs below the nose.It can fire 300 rounds of its 1200 capacity in 1 minute before the barrel needs to cool down a bit.

I like to include some simulated flight shots of aircraft builds. This one shows the very angular form of the helicopter, not least the cockpit canopy, the most difficult part of the build. It also shows the asymmetric underwing load typical of British Army aircraft in Afghanistan during the later stages of UK operations in Afghanistan (OP HERRICK).

The Apache Trail in Arizona was a stagecoach trail that ran through the Superstition Mountains. It was named the Apache Trail after the Apache Indians who originally used this trail to move through the Superstition Mountains.

 

The current Apache Trail links Apache Junction (33.4152°N 111.5807°W) at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Theodore Roosevelt Lake (33.6725°N 111.1531°W), through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest.

 

Today, the majority of Apache Trail remains unpaved, turning into a dirt road a few miles up from Tortilla Flat, and continuing as such for nearly the full remainder of its length. The section east of Apache Junction is known officially as State Route 88. It is also the main traffic corridor through Apache Junction, turning into Main Street as the road passes into Mesa, and regains the Apache name by becoming Apache Boulevard in Tempe, ending at Mill Avenue. Prior to the completion of the Superstition Freeway in 1992, the Apache Junction portion of the Apache Trail was part of US Highway 60, which was rerouted to the Superstition Freeway once it was completed.

 

The Trail winds steeply through 40 miles (64 km) of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes like Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. The narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam; there are steep cliff drops and little in the way of safety barriers. The trail requires caution when driving and it is not recommended for large RVs, SUVs, or caravans. Some large RV rental companies in the US do not allow their vehicles to be taken on this route.

Sie führt über 116 Kilometer von Apache Junction nach Globe-Miami, wo sich die 63 Kilometer lange Gila-Pinal Scenic Road direkt anschließt, die zurück nach Phoenix führt.

 

Zwischen Apache Junction und dem Tonto National Monument gehört der Apache Trail zu den landschaftlich reizvollsten Routen in den USA. Die abenteuerliche Fahrt ist ein unvergessliches Western-Erlebnis. Theodore Roosevelt sagte bei der Einweihung des nach ihm benannten Staudamms sinngemäß: „Im Apache Trail treffen das Großartige der Alpen, die Pracht der Rocky Mountains und die Herrlichkeit des Grand Canyons zusammen.“

 

Der Apache Trail folgt einem alten Pfad der Apachen durch die Felsschluchten des Salt River, führt jedoch an der Canyon-Seite höher hinauf, weil der Canyon jetzt teilweise in den Fluten des Salt Rivers und den sich anschließend bildenden Seen ertrunken ist. Kurz nach 1900 wurde er als Versorgungsstraße für den Bau des Theodore-Roosevelt-Damms angelegt. Heute führt er an einer Reihe attraktiver State Parks und kleiner Orte entlang und gewährt Zugang zu den schönen Superstition Mountains.

An Apache pulling a violent manouevre at high speed, its underside picked out in the sunlight. The build is as 'studless' as possible, with extensive use here of inverted construction allowing tiles to produce a smooth underside.

This photo of the Army Air Corps Apache helicopter was taken at the end of their display and demonstration at RIAT yesterday.

Detail showing the canopy construction and the starboard underwing stores: a CR7 rocket pod, and quad Hellfire rails with just two missiles carried, a typical load in combination with the extra fuel tank under the port winglet which allows for extended loiter time over the battlefield. And, of course, the 30mm chain gun.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement, and a tandem cockpit for a crew of two. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. First flown on 30 September 1975, the AH-64 features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. The Apache is armed with a 30-millimeter (1.2 in) M230 Chain Gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's forward fuselage. It has four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons, typically carrying a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rocket pods. The AH-64 also features double- and triple-redundant aircraft systems to improve survivability for the aircraft and crew in combat, as well as improved crash survivability for the pilots.

 

The U.S. Army selected the AH-64 over the Bell YAH-63 in 1976, awarding Hughes Helicopters a pre-production contract for two more aircraft. In 1982, the Army approved full production. McDonnell Douglas continued production and development after purchasing Hughes Helicopters from Summa Corporation in 1984. The first production AH-64D Apache Longbow, a greatly-upgraded version of the original Apache, was delivered to the Army in March 1997. AH-64 production is continued by the Boeing Defense, Space & Security division; over one thousand AH-64s have been produced to date.

 

The U.S. Army is the primary operator of the AH-64, however it has also become the primary attack helicopter of several nations it has been exported to, including Greece, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands and Singapore; as well as being produced under license in the United Kingdom as the AgustaWestland Apache. U.S. AH-64s have served in conflicts in Panama, Persian Gulf War, Kosovo War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Israel has made active use of the Apache in its military conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza Strip, while two coalition allies have deployed their AH-64s in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Apache attack helicopter can operate in all weathers, day or night and detect, classify and prioritise up to 256 potential targets in a matter of seconds. It carries a mix of weapons including rockets, Hellfire missiles and a 30mm chain gun, as well as a state of the art fully integrated defensive aid suite.

In addition to the distinctive Longbow radar located above the rotor blades, this aircraft is equipped with a day TV system, thermal imaging sight and direct view optics.

Looking up the barrel of the 30mm chain gun. This view also shows the underwing stores well. The external fuel tank under the port winglet should have a more streamlined form, but this is the best that current Lego parts allow.
