Frans Hals (Antwerp, 1580 - Haarlem, August 26, 1666) portrait of Tyman Oosdorp (1613-1668) (1656) - oil on canvas 82 x 73,5 cm - Gemäldegalerie, Berlin

The portrait of Tyman Oosdorp from 1656, a member of the Haarlem city council since 1651, has the characteristic features of Hals's later work: the subject is not ready for dialogue, but in a distant, self-bound pose. The design corresponds to a concentration on the reproduction of spiritual expression. The face standing in the light is sculpted more vividly than the robe.

------------------------------------------

City Hall is a neoclassical building dating from 1908, built according to the plans of city architect Alexis Van Mechelen at the request of the city council. It is located on the Meir, the main shopping street in the city of Antwerp. Another entrance is on Hopland. Along the Meir had always been retail spaces and apartments. Through a gate they had access to the rear reclining hall. The pub has a rather unique for that time span as metal construction.

For a long time it was one of the most famous venues in Antwerp that include shelter offered to art exhibitions, the Antwerp Antiques Fair, the fair, auto salon and various celebrations. In 1983 the building was classified as a protected monument. On December 27, 2000 destroyed a fierce fire almost throughout the building and remained there hardly anything about.

------------------------------------------

The Scheldt near Antwerp

The Romans, the Vikings, the Spaniards, Napoleon; they all recognized the strategic importance of the Scheldt. Due to its location on this river, Antwerp has become what it is today: a world city with a world port. "An Antwerp citizen has his hand in the Scheldt and he is connected to the rest of the world," former mayor Lode Craeybeckx once said. Thanks to the Scheldt, ships have been bringing the most diverse products from the farthest corners of the world to Antwerp for centuries and there is a ship available for every cargo for any destination worldwide.

Zurenborg is an area in south-east Antwerp largely developed between 1894 and 1906 that features a high concentration of townhouses in Art Nouveau and other fin-de-siècle styles.

Together with Zuid, the urban quarter around the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Zurenborg is unique in Antwerp in that it is among the few areas in the city developed according to an urban plan in the late 19th century. The new neighbourhood reflected Antwerp's growing wealth, linked to growing port and trade activities, well. The northern - largest - area of Zurenborg, centered around Dageraadplaats, was mainly developed for the middle class, while the southern area, around Cogels Osylei, was mainly targeted to the well to do. The most eastern corner, which currently includes a bus yard of the public transport company and a power transfer station, was more devoted to industries and logistics, including a gas factory and a terminus station of a regional tram system. Engetrim, a development and construction company, had the lead in developing Zurenborg. Before, Zurenborg was an agricultural area dominated by an estate belonging to the Osy family. [Wikipedia]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The current (and third) station Antwerp Central Station was built between 1899 and 1905 as a headend. The building consists of a steel platform roof and a stone station building. The steel platform roof was constructed between 1895 and 1899 according to plans by engineer Clement Van Bogaert by the Compagnie Centrale de Construction.De roof is 43 meters high (height needed to absorb the smoke of the locomotive), 186 meters long and 66 meters wide and could accommodate up to 10 dead-end tracks. The stone station building (reception building) was built between 1899 and 1905 by Louis Delacenserie (assisted by Charles Poupaert) in eclectic style (a combination of stylistic elements from earlier periods). Delacenserie was inspired by the old railway station in Lucerne in 1896 and the Pantheon in Rome. The highest point of the railway station (75 meters) is a large dome. The station was opened on August 11, 1905.
