You can play the game with other people, either in real time, using an Internet connection, visiting their villages and bringing gifts, chatting, etc (there's also a voice chat option if you have the mic that plugs into the Nintendo Wii), or asynchronously with other people in the house - they play then go to bed, then you play, etc - up to 4 players per village. You can communicate in-game with people by sending letters (to computer generated characters, other players - both in your village and the other villages of friends that you visit)
