En 1888 la Sociedad Anónima Teatro La Opera decide la construcción de un gran teatro lírico mediante un concurso de anteproyectos. Se otorga la obra a los Ingenieros arquitectos Cremona y Contri. Se inicia el edificio pero, por problemas económicos, se interrumpe cuando la construcción estaba en el primer piso. Abandonado. Sin destino preciso. Refugio de menesterosos. De sus laberintos y fosos nacerían historias misteriosas, la ciudad lo conocía como la Cueva de los Ladrones. En 1889 el empresario Emilio O. Schiffner, con visión clara y objetivos comerciales, compra la Sociedad y concluye las obras contratando al Ing. alemán George Goldammer, especialista en acústica, quien rectifica los planos originales. La ejecución de la obra la lleva a cabo la empresa constructora Bianchi, Vila y Cía. Artistas de la talla de Luis Levoni y Beloti trabajaron en la yesería interior y exterior, así como en los frescos de la boca de escenario. Los magníficos frescos de la cúpula de la sala principal y el telón fueron obra de Giuseppe Carmignani, artista italiano que llegó a trabajar a nuestro país a fines del siglo XIX. Como curiosidad, este telón pintado con imágenes de la mitología griega, tiene uno con idéntica iconografía en el Teatro Regio de Parma, pero utilizando distintos colores.
