This is the only photo I had the chance to take with Instagram (*) before the Facebook acquisition. The photo couldn't make it to their Weekend Hashtag Project #twoofakind for a matter of hours (it was taken too early, on Friday evening) but I think it would have been a decent submission.
However, less than two days after, and less than a week after the Android application was released, potentially doubling (or even more) their overall audience, Instagram shamelessly sold their users to Facebook. I was prepared to pay for an Instagram application; I was not prepared to become an offshoot of Facebook, which I despise and don't want to be involved with in any possible way. A brief blog post by Dave Winer describes quite closely how I felt about the whole business.
I have therefore removed my Instagram account and deleted the application from my smartphone. For the time being, I plan to stick to Flickr for all my public photo sharing needs.
(*) Well, not exactly. When I removed the application, I also deleted the Instagram image folder from the SD card, so I lost the photo with the Earlybird filter applied. However, on my Samsung Galaxy Ace, Instagram's camera takes a whole 4:3 photo, saving it to the default gallery folder, then crops it to 1:1 and works with the square image. Thus, this is an attempt to reproduce the final photo by using a different tool chain: namely, Adobe Photoshop Express for the square crop, and Pixlr-o-matic for the Aladdin effect and the Vignette overlay that are quite able to match Instagram's Earlybird filter.
