Two floors, one unit, built 1915. As of late, developers have been snatching up many of these older buildings.
I don't know, though the second one notices "no smoking" signs posted on the exterior walls of a dwelling, it's mostly a telltale sign of upcoming construction.

I've always loved this building, as it has such a classic look to it. And over the years along my walks to/fro my office I've taken to photographing it.

My hunch paid off as this structure was completely torn down. I've been photographing the back of the building, as the front faces a police station, and not many people understand why I photograph construction. Several times I've been asked if I was an insurance surveyor. That one makes sense, as many times I'm dressed from work. No, just a hobbyist photographer. Essentially it's my documenting the pre/post gentrification of my neighborhood

Joel Meyerowitz (born March 6, 1938) is an American street, portrait and landscape photographer. He began photographing in color in 1962 and was an early advocate of the use of color during a time when there was significant resistance to the idea of color photography as serious art. In the early 1970s he taught photography at the Cooper Union in New York City.
His work is in the collections of the International Center of Photography, Museum of Modern Art, and New York Public Library, all in New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.
This is interesting. These frosted glass block windows have existed ever since this building first opened back in 1992. This is a LaGuardia Community College building. They have several buildings in this same area. I'm wondering and extremely curious whether they're planning on changing these windows. No info about this project on their website. This building was designed by famed architect 'Danforth Toan', renown for his brutalist designs.
Long Island City was originally reserved for factories and bakeries. The Long Island Expressway (LIE) has a Van Dam Street exit which runs right through this area and connects to Queens Boulevard and the 59th Street/Queensboro Bridge. That's city-bound traffic. The outbound city traffic exits the bridge via 21st Street, Queens Blvd or Thomson Avenue, which runs into Van Dam St and then several blocks down to the LIE. This building sits smack right on the corner of Thomson Avenue and Van Dam Street. Odd location for a college, though the land may have been cheaper back then.
For several years now, Long Island City has been gentrifying at a break neck speed. And whoever is responsible for changing the windows of this building knows that. It's not just a building. It's a statement. And a really good one. For it will change the dynamic of that entire neighborhood

The lead owner of Wildflower Studios is actor Robert DeNiro. The studio features: 11 sound stages, a public promenade, solar panels, cafes, and lounges.
The studio was designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, whose company is titled Bjarke Ingels Group aka BIG. The two letter country code top-level domain extension for Denmark is dk. So his website address is BIG.dk. Coincidence? Doubtful

This photo was taken just last Monday morning, August 4th, and what I took notice of is how the morning light has already begun to change, which is odd, as it typically wouldn't look like this until at least mid-late September. So, this tells me how we may have an early winter. I'm all for that. This NYC Summer heat has just been too much this year.

Founding and early history
Paul Van Doren, his brother James, and Gordon C. Lee opened the first Vans store as "The Van Doren Rubber Company" on March 16, 1966, at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California. The business manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. Upon opening, twelve customers purchased Vans deck shoes (now called "Authentic"), similar to those manufactured by Keds but with a thicker sole. The store had display models of three styles of shoes, priced between US$2.49 and $4.99, but did not have any inventory ready to sell and Paul Van Doren did not have change to give customers; customers took their shoes home and came back the next day to pay.
Middle history
The original Vans skateboard logo was designed in Costa Mesa, California, in the 1970s by Mark Van Doren, son of then-President and co-owner James Van Doren, at age 13; Mark's design was a stencil, allowing the logo to be spray-painted onto his skateboards. The design was incorporated into the heel tab on Style 95, an early Vans skateboard shoe. Mark's interest in skateboarding is what led Vans to manufacture skateboarding shoes.

Dating to 1888, this neo-classical fountain was the gift of the wealthy San Francisco dentist, businessman, and temperance crusader Henry D. Cogswell (1820–1900).
The erection of the Temperance Fountain in Tompkins Square Park resulted from Cogswell’s affiliation with the Moderation Society, which was formed in 1877 to address health conditions on the Lower East Side, and to distribute free ice-water fountains to encourage citizens to drink water instead of alcoholic beverages. Cogswell served as the group’s honorary president in 1890, and the collaboration produced another temperance fountain at the New York City main post office at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. The figure of Hebe, the mythical water carrier, atop the pyramidal stone pediment was originally fabricated in zinc by the J. L. Mott Iron Works in Mott Haven in the Bronx. The classically-styled figure is based on a marble statue made circa 1816 by the renowned Danish sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (c.1770–1844). Thorvaldsen’s 1839 marble self-portrait stands in Central Park at East 97th Street. Though the four ornamental luminaires with red, white and blue tinted glass, which once flanked the fountain, long ago vanished, this monument has withstood the vagaries of time better than most. In 1992, the fountain underwent extensive restoration, and the Hebe statue was replaced with a more durable bronze replica.

Kenyan-born British photographer Max Vadukul, is a British-Indian photographer based in Milan, Italy. Noted for his black-and-white imagery, Vadukul expressed his preference for monochrome photography as superior, stating, “Black-and-white is king. King of kings. Color is Commercial”, in an interview with J’aipur journal.

Nothing yet on this. This building was designed by famed architect 'Danforth Toan', renown for his brutalist designs. And it looks like they're doing some sort of interior renovations. The windows had been comprised of individually frosted cubes of glass. This is a LaGuardia Community College building. The college was founded in 1971, with this building being completed in 1992. Long Island City was a very different place back then, with most of the surrounding buildings being closed down factories. The neighborhood has gentrified and this college no doubt knows that. Oddly enough, no info is available on the college's website reference whatever construction this is.
Changing the windows would be a bold statement. And a really good one. For it will enhance this dynamic neighborhood even further.

The church owns a 1927 Skinner pipe organ, which is still operational and used during Sunday services. The church also has a handbell choir which rings hymns, peals and processionals. Other musical activity at the church includes a choir, piano, cello and musical saw.
