Heidi isn't amused at all. The dreaded suitcase is out and the human is conspicuously busy. She'll be pampered 24/7 by my parents, and it's just for a week, but I dread putting her in her carrier anyway. The last times the carrier meant going to the vet for her cancer treatment, which wasn't any fun (but, so far, the outcome of surgery plus homeopathic treatment has been positive... she's eight weeks tumor free now! *touch wood*)

The Starlings have returned to my garden for the summer. These birds are messy eaters; scattering food all around and then grabbing quick a drink before dashing off to the next venue. As unruly as they are, I still find them amusing and enjoy their visit.
Starlings will eat nearly anything, but they focus on insects and other invertebrates when they’re available. Common prey include grasshoppers, beetles, flies, caterpillars, snails, earthworms, millipedes, and spiders. They also eat fruits including wild and cultivated cherries, holly berries, hackberries, mulberries, tupelo, Virginia creeper, sumac, and blackberries; as well as grains, seeds, nectar, livestock feed, and garbage.
Male starlings begin building the nest before mating takes place, filling the cavity with grass and pine needles, along with feathers, trash, cloth, and string. There’s a depression near the back of the cavity where the cup is built and lined with feathers, fine bark, leaves, and grass. Females oversee the final arrangements and may discard some of the material the male added. Starlings also add fresh green plants to the nest throughout the nesting period, particularly during laying and incubation. Nests can be built in as little as 1-3 days. Both sexes incubate the eggs.

Am 20. September 2018 war ich mal wieder an der "Ligne 4" zugegen, um den hier bereits mehrfach porträtierten VFLI-Sandzug von Oulchy-Breny nach Bantzenheim abzupassen. Anders als an Sonntagen bietet die donnerstägliche Leistung dabei den Vorteil, dass man sich vorher noch mit ein paar "Baleines", die unter der Woche als TER zwischen Belfort und Vesoul unterwegs sind, auf den Starzug einstimmen kann.
Im Licht der aufgehenden Sonne wird so auch der schnöde X 73745 als TER 894406 (Belfort - Vesoul) zum schmackhaften Appetithäppchen, als er bei Saulx entlang der funkelnden Telegrafendrähte durch den Herbstmorgen brummt.
Heute, rund zwei Jahre später, ist diese Szene m. W. leider nicht mehr wiederholbar, da östlich von Vesoul die Telegrafenleitung bereits merklich auf dem Rückmarsch ist und die letzten Drähte vermutlich in diesen Monaten fallen dürften. So deutete es sich zumindest bei meinem Besuch im vergangenen Sommer an. Vorübergehend bleibt für Nostalgiker noch der Abschnitt westlich von Vesoul in Richtung Port-sur-Saône. Aber gemäß der Planungen von SNCF Réseau auch nicht mehr lange...

je m'amuse beaucoup avec les guirlandes lumineuses de Noël... je ne sais pas si je vais les ranger dans les cartons cette année :-) !!

A small savoury snack or appetizer. This one was prepared from an oatcake, cream cheese, whisky infused salmon, tomato, lemon and dill. The oatcake is two and a half inches in diameter.
