The Amazon kingfisher resembles the green kingfisher, but it is much larger than its relative, and three to four times as heavy. Amazon kingfishers are often seen perched on a branch or rock close to water before plunging in head first after their fish prey. They also feed on insects and amphibians. They are the most likely American green kingfisher to be seen on large rivers.
The Pantanal is a tropical wetland and the world's largest wetland of any kind. The Pantanal ecosystem is also thought to be home to 1000 bird species, 400 fish species, 300 mammalian species, 480 reptile species and over 9000 different subspecies of invertebrates.

off a boat. Other than size, the amazon and green kingfishers are very similar indeed. the amazon carries its crest more prominently and white wing spots only visible in flight.

Not the bookshop - the ancient female warrior. This is the head of what was once a full figure of a wounded amazon. This you cannot tell from just this head, of course, but this is a Roman copy (from ca 150 A.D. - made of marble) of an older statue which was quite popular. So with just this head, you can tell what original this was a copy of. And hence which motif it was. There was no mass-production back in the day, as we know it, but that did not mean everything existed in just one copy.
At Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brasil - Male - The Amazon Kingfisher is a resident of lakeshores and large-slow flowing rivers from northern Mexico south to central Argentina. They are large dark bronzy green birds with a ragged crest, a white throat and collar, and a white belly; the breast of the male is rufous, while the female has a narrower green breastband. Amazon Kingfishers are superficially similar to the Green Kingfisher Chloroceryle americana, but are much larger with a heavier bill, and typically forage from more conspicuous perches. Amazon Kingfishers hunt fish and crustaceans from a perch, diving into the water to catch their prey and then returning to the same perch before stunning their prey and swallowing it head first. These kingfishers also occasionally hover above the water before diving to catch prey. The nests are excavated by making tunnels into road cuts or erosion gullies near water.

I photographed this Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona) near La Macarena, Meta, Colombia, in February 2021. Adult males have dark bronzy green upperparts divided by a white collar, a white throat and a rich rufous breast, while females lack the rufous breast. It usually dives from a perch for fish and crustaceans and occasionally hovers before diving. It lives in the lowlands of the American tropics from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/1000 sec, f/6.7, ISO 800, −0.5 EV. Visits to Caño Cristales, the Mirador Cristalitos and the Raudal de Angosturas in La Macarena National Park are arranged through authorized local operators.

These parrots breed here, and compete with Wood Ducks for nest cavities! This bird was angrily commenting after a Wood Duck hen had checked out a potential nest cavity that the parrots were interested in.

Arguably the longest river in the world, the Amazon meanders its way from the towering Andes in Peru to the sweeping coastline of Brazil, where it empties into the vast Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon River and its tributaries is located in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Brazil. The entire river measures over 4,000 miles from its source to the river mouth. However, the exact length of the Amazon is arguable as the location of its start and end points have both been disputed historically. The Amazon River is currently alleged to be 6,992 kilometers long.*

Lucky to get, out of about 25 attempts, two fairly decent, almost focused, bigly cropped, shots of this bird as he kept ahead of us in our bobbing zodiac on the Penas Blancas river
I photographed this Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona) at the Hacienda El Triunfo Private Nature Reserve, near Honda, Tolima, Colombia, in October 2019. Both members of a pair dig a sloping burrow into a riverbank, with a nest chamber at the end. It has a shaggy crest and a long, heavy bill, and males have a rich rufous breast that females lack. It lives along large rivers and the wooded shores of lakes, and it prefers open country to dense forest. It lives in the lowlands of the American tropics, from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400. No immediate threats to it have been identified, though its numbers are believed to be decreasing.

The Amazon rainforest is currently experiencing a significant increase in wildfires, with 9,000 fires burning simultaneously across Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. The fires are largely set intentionally to clear land for cattle ranching, farming, and logging, and have been exacerbated by the dry season. The number of fires is an 80% increase over the same period last year. The Amazon is often called "the lungs of the world," absorbing greenhouse gases that would otherwise harm the planet. The fires are destroying the homes of indigenous tribes, threatening millions of animals, and even darkening the skies over major cities. The impact of the fires on the Amazon's biodiversity will be significant, with between 40,000 and 73,400 square miles of the rainforest impacted by fires since 2001, affecting 95% of all Amazonian species and as many as 85% of species that are listed as threatened in this region.

One of the most famous rocks faces in the world is Half Dome rises nearly 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and 8,800 feet above sea level . In summer it is a favorite hiking trail that is scary on top and takes about 12 hours round trip. Made of granite and formed after several ice ages and make famous by the black and white photos of Ansel Adams. One of the prettiest spots on planet earth. flic.kr/p/2mMT8Yj click the link to see an amazing Yosemite video too.
