Shorebirds of Ireland, Freshwater Birds of Ireland and The Birds of Ireland: A Field Guide with Jim Wilson.

The Rook (Corvus frugilegus) is a member of the Corvidae family in the passerine order of birds. Named by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the species name frugilegus is Latin for "food-gathering".

Rooks are distinguished from similar members of the crow family by the bare grey-white skin around the base of the adult's bill in front of the eyes. The feathering around the legs also look shaggier and laxer than the congeneric Carrion Crow. The juvenile is superficially more similar to the Crow because it lacks the bare patch at the base of the bill, but it loses the facial feathers after about six months. Collective nouns for rooks include building, parliament, clamour and storytelling. Nesting is always colonial (rookeries), usually in the very tops of the trees. Branches and twigs are broken off trees (very rarely picked up off the ground), though as many are likely to be stolen from nearby nests as are collected from trees.

Though resident in Great Britain, Ireland and much of north and central Europe, vagrant to Iceland and northern Scandinavia, it also occurs as an eastern race in Asia where it differs in being very slightly smaller on average, and having a somewhat more fully feathered face.

In captivity, when confronted with problems, rooks have recently been documented as one of multiple species of bird capable of tool use to obtain a goal. (wikipedia)

Taken at Kew Gardens, London

From Wednesday 24th November 2021, Go-Coach was asked to provide an additional journey on Fastrack AZ this being a duplicate to the 06:45 Amazon LCY3 to Dartford. Unusually the vehicle used is from the standard fleet and not from the Amazon pool of E400s.

On school days it's on the duty which goes on to form the S13 from Wilmington to Sevenoaks Schools, whilst on a Saturday, Sunday and non-schooldays its an Optare Solo. The a.m. duplicate journey ran until Monday 10th January 2022.

Pictured here on the first Saturday the smallest bus in the fleet 2801 YJ59 GFG is seen at a very damp Amazon LCY3 before working the 06:45 duplciate to Dartford Acacia Car Park. Saturday 4th December 2021.

The Amazon lily are monocotyledonous, bulbous plants originating from the rainforest of the South American Andes of Peru and Colombia. This so-called “hothouse bulbous plant,” has large, dark green leaves, with ribbings similar to those of the familiar plantain-lily found in gardens.

There are about 10 species of this plant and they all bear fragrant white flowers. The lily’s main flowering season is in winter although it can bloom several times a year in spring or during summer.

Amazon River

The Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over northern Brazil on 22 August 2017, where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The sediment-laden water appears brown as it flows from the lower left to the open ocean in the upper right. ‘Popcorn’ clouds are visible in parts of the image – a common occurrence during the Amazon’s dry season, formed by condensed water vapour released by plants and trees during the sunny day.

The land varies in colour from the deep green of dense vegetation to light brown. Taking a closer look to the upper-left section of the image, we can see large brown areas where the vegetation has already been cleared away. Geometric shapes indicate agricultural fields, and linear roads cut through the remaining dense vegetation.

Rainforests worldwide are being destroyed at an alarming rate. This is of great concern because they play an important role in global climate, and are home to a wide variety of plants, animals and insects. More than a third of all species in the world live in the Amazon Rainforest.

Unlike other forests, rainforests have difficulty regrowing after they are destroyed and, owing to their composition, their soils are not suitable for long-term agricultural use.

With their unique view from space, Earth observation satellites have been instrumental in highlighting the vulnerability of the rainforests by documenting the scale of deforestation.
