From the St. Gotthard Pass, Ticino, Switzerland.

The station is the terminus of the Luzern-Stans-Engelberg railway line, which is operated by Zentralbahn.

It is located in the village, along Bahnhofstrasse.

Elevation is about 999 m above sea level.

The station offers hourly InterRegio service connecting Engelberg with Lucerne.

The Großglockner, standing at 3,798 meters, is Austria's highest mountain and a prominent symbol of the Alps. Located in the Hohe Tauern range, it attracts numerous mountaineers and nature enthusiasts each year. Its distinctive pyramid-shaped peak makes it one of the most famous mountains in Europe, with the first recorded ascent dating back to 1800.

At the base of the Großglockner lies the Pasterze Glacier, Austria's largest glacier. Stretching about eight kilometers, it is an impressive natural wonder. However, the Pasterze has been significantly affected by climate change, retreating considerably over the past few decades.

The Großglockner and the Pasterze are not only popular destinations but also visible reminders of the impacts of climate change. The Großglockner High Alpine Road offers visitors a direct view of the shrinking glacier, highlighting the need to protect these unique natural environments.

This stunning photo, taken along the Haiyaha Junction Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, showcases the park’s natural beauty. A vibrant green meadow is framed by towering pine trees, with the jagged rocky cliffs of the mountains rising majestically in the background. The clear blue sky dotted with white clouds completes this tranquil alpine scene, reflecting the untouched wilderness and serene grandeur of the Rocky Mountains.

A cold but magical morning above Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. The artificial lake reflected the quiet forest and the snow-covered peaks. Two fly fishermen moved with surprising grace, their lines drawing elegant curves into the misty air.

I watched from the wooden dock, careful not to get caught by a sweeping rod — a humorous reminder that photography and fishing sometimes get closer than expected.

Lawari Pass 3118 mt, has to close for about five months during the winter snowfall. Lawari Tunnel is being constructed to avoid zigzagging over the pass up and down and is near its completion. Sambu Company of South Korea is currently constructing it. At present, the project is being held in abeyance until agreement is reached on funding it with the government of Pakistan.

The above shot had been taken while hanging around Kalam Valley and heading for Ushu, a beautiful nearby small valley and popular resort for tourists and trekkers. The mountains of Mankial Valley had lured me and I halted along the trekking trail for shots to be taken with my Kodak M550. I wish I would have bivouacked near the jagged-tops of those beautiful mountains with my comrades!

I took this shot from a land-cruiser going to Chitral last winter. This remote hamlet is inhabited only by nomadic and small animals in summer.

Lake 22, nestled in Washington’s North Cascades, is known for its mirrored reflections and rugged alpine backdrop. On a still morning, the water becomes glass — perfectly doubling the evergreens and jagged peaks above.

Shot during a small hike around the wilderkaiser mountains in Austria.

The image captures the Gran Valira River flowing through the picturesque town of Santa Coloma in Andorra on a bright summer day. The clear, fast-moving water cascades over a small weir, creating white foamy rapids before continuing its journey downstream. On the right, dense green foliage and trees line the riverbank, while the left side reveals a few buildings blending with the natural landscape. In the background, rugged mountains rise under a vivid blue sky dotted with soft, white clouds.

A pose with my son atop the steep Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in Manipur in NE India- we have traveled her for a wedding and are now on an outing with members of our host family which included the bride and the groom- a rare honour indeed! Members from our host family thought this shot of me and my son made a perfect picture. In the background is th Shirui mountain range, famous for the Shirui Lily, the de facto national (well, state) flower of Manipur and which is celebrated with a Shirui Lily Festival during blooming season. To the West of Phangrei are the mountains of neighbouring Burma (Myanmar), though I never really got to see them. Detailed notes about the Shirui Phangrei hill and the Shirui Lily appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

And so here we are now, at the base of Phangrei hill, a popular picnic spot in this this part of Manipur, NE India. The strenuous uphill trek starts from here and this sign talks about the hill. Lunghar Sihai Phangrei is a long, flat hill range in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. Sihai Phangrei is a popular picnic spot for the locals but is also frequented by tourists. The Sihai Phangrai, also spelled as Sihai Phangrei joins the Shirui Peak which is famous for the Shirui Lilies- the de facto symbol of Manipur. The Lunghar Sihai Phangrei is very rich in flora- a big variety of flowers and fruit grow in the hill range including rare orchids and fruit such as grapes, passion fruit, apple, pear, plum, peach, etc. There is a beautiful and serene waterfall as well near here which cascades down the hill range adding to the beauty of the place. We did not spot the waterfall, but we did get to a lake atop the hill. More notes as we go along in this album. (see subsequent pictures).(Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

Here is a brief Hyperlapse view of an ice cream vendor making his own ice cream cones on the steps leading up to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa or World Peace Pagoda in Pokhara, Nepal. I generally suck at steep mountain climbs, even if there are steps or stairs leading up to the top, but am on my way up here as my good guide assured me that the views of the Himalayas from the top were amazing. Well, having undertaken the trek,a cold dessert was in order when I was a lttle over half way up to the top. This kind gentleman had had other fascinated guests before as well, and one Italian man was so impressed that he made a Hyperlapse video of the cone making process. Although I had no data, I managed between him and my guide to have him send the file to me on AirDrop- fortunately the ice cream vendor was using an iPhone as well- and so here it is. Enjoy! (my Facebook viewers will find this video in a separate Videos folder under my Profile). (Pokhara, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Kids are always so adorable! I am near a lake atop the Sihai Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in Manipur, NE India along with several members of our host family. I have just endured a pretty stiff climb up this hill and my lights are out and I am completely out of steam. Still, in order to not inconvenience my hosts and embarrass myself further, I found the strength to get up and walk around a bit. Relieved that I was up and about, my hosts took a couple of shots of me against the lake. And just as I was finishing up, one of the little kids from the host family ran up to me to join me in the selfie. Now isn't that admirable! Detailed notes about the Sihai Phangrei hill appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

The Kangchenjunga transboundary landscape is shared by four countries, viz Bhutan, China, India and Nepal, and between them comprise of 14 protected areas with a total area of 6,032 sqr. km (2,329 sqr. miles). These protected areas are habitats for many globally significant plant species such as rhododendrons and orchids and many endangered flagship species of fauna such as snow leopard, Asiatic black bear, red panda, Himalayan musk deer, blood pheasant and chestnut-breasted partridge. (May 2009)

This then is the Shirui Lily- that's what the fuss is all about. The Lilium Mackliniae or Shirui lily, is a rare Indian species of plant found only in the upper reaches of the Shirui hill ranges in the Ukhrul district of Manipur, India. This plant grows only at an elevation of 1,730–2,590 mtr above sea level. I am on the Sihai Phangrei hill near Ukhrul, and this mountain joins the Shiruil hill range which is located near the boundary of Myanmar to the east, Shirui village in the west, Choithar village in the south and Sihai village in the north. The shade-loving Shiruil Lily has pale bluish-pink petals but has seven colours when observed through a microscope. In the wild, it flowers in the monsoon months of June and July. These are seasonal flowering plants and at their best in May and June when they blooms. The peak season of its bloom is May 15 to June 5. The height of the plant is 1–3 feet and has one to seven flowers per plant. I was having enough trouble even getting up this pretty steep Phangrei Hill- the adjoining Shirul Hill is even more steep. It is said to look magical at peak blooming season and the locals even celebrate a Shirui Festival in season. As a city boy, how all those people climb those steep hills so easily and tirelessly is way beyond me! (photo source: Shirul Lily facebook page). A rest stop on the climb atop the really steep Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in Manipur, NE India. And this time I am with the groom of the wedding I had just attended the previous day. (see previous pictures earlier in this album). This gentleman was a pretty affable chap and decided to give me company right till the very end of the steep climb, despite the fact that my rest stops began to get increasing frequent and longer each time. I really admire his patience. From once every 10 min, my rest stops became once in 5 minutes to once in 2 steps to every few steps. It’s only on the way down that I was to appreciate how steep the hill really was. And my travel companions were saying this is one of the milder ones- there are hills which climb almost vertically. Detailed notes about the Lungar Phangreil hill appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

As a stark contrast to the horrors we had just witnessed in the Kundasang War Memorial, this scene serves to soothe frayed nerves. Here is some out of this world alpine scenery as seen from the pergola at the other end of the memorial. The large series of sheds in the foreground seems to be a greenhouse of sorts. This area is know for its vegetable cultivation and its large wholesale vegetable market. But what does it for me in this photograph is the plume of smoke at the extreme left. Sets your imagination soaring, about lighting a fire, cooking, ethnic lifestyle etc. (Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia, Nov. 2013)

The Kanchenjunga is sacred to the local people, but they do not object to people climbing it, like the locals do at Ayers Rock in Australia. Kangchenjunga was first climbed on May 25, 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, who were part of a British expedition. The British expedition honoured the beliefs of the Sikkimese and stopped a few feet short of the actual summit. Most successful summit parties since then have followed this tradition. (May 2009)

After huffing and puffing and embarrassing myself several times with my all too frequent rest stops to catch my breath and give some rest to my aching muscles, we have finally reached the top of the Phangrei Hill. What we see is this little lake at the end of what turned out to be a long, strenuous climb up the steep, steep mountain of Phangrei neat Ukhrul in Manipur in NE India. And although I was out of breath and completely out of steam, members from my host family, including the matriarch of the family who is much older than me, made short work of the climb. The younger ones- even those in their late 30ss- had reached up and were actually playing games up there or wandering off to far corners of the mountain top! Although technically this is a seasonal lake, I understand it has water in it most of the time but is best in winter. Frankly, with all the troubles I had climbing up here- in January, and hence winter- I can't imagine attempting this in the height of summer. On the western direction of the lake is the neighbouring country of Burma (Myanmar)- yes, Manipur is bordered by Burma on one side. I'm not sure West as seen from which side of the lake - I did not know of this at the time of my visit anyway- so I will not attempt to tell you which side Burma lies. (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

Pelling is a town in the district of West Sikkim, India and is located at an altitude of 2,150 m above sea level. The mighty Himalayas and the Kanchenjunga peak in particular can be viewed at close quarters from Pelling. The Pelling environs are still comparatively still a virgin territory and the area is blessed with alpine vegetation, with numerous waterfalls lining the hillside. (not for long, development is catching up fast in Pelling). I was particularly caught up by the isolated building on the steep hillside (dead centre). This picture is shot at 10x zoom with my capable Canon SX100IS camera. (May. 2009)

There it is, thn the glorious sunrise over the Himalayas at the sunrise viewing point at Sarangkot, just outside of Pokhara, Nepal. Magnificent vista indeed, but before we go on, I simply must show you this. I have got some truly great views of the sunrise from my position at the viewing gallery, having been lucky enough to claw my way right up to the front past a kind Chinese couple. After the photography, I purposely fell back a little to take this picture of the sheer herds of humans around me. This indeed was the biggest off-putting factor for me, for enjoying this magnificent sunrise. Pushing and jostling aside, the most irritating thing was when scores of them stuck their hands up in the air, cellphone cameras in hand, obscuring the view for everyone behind them. I even had to bark at one stupid moron who was in that position for a good fifteen minutes, without moving. But for now, I am lucky to have got a positon right against the railings with no inconsiderate people in front of me holding up their cellphones in this fashion. In fact the idiot I had to bark at was actually standing on a raised balustrade, so apart from his camera, his body too was obscuring the view. Ouch! (Pokhara, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Having made several photo stops on the way to Kazbegi/ Stepantsminda, and having got enough shots on my memory card, we drove past all those sites- the mountain pass, Gudauri, Ananuri- the whole lot. We did not have to stop for dinner as well as I had decided to pick up a khachapuri (cheese bread- a Georgian staple) upon hitting Tbilisi later in the evening. So these last two photos are taken from the running car. Here is a herd of cattle coming down a steep mountain slope to bed down for the night. I know goats are amazingly sure footed, and some of them balance precariously on narrow ledges of rock on impossible mountain slopes. But cattle? I was amazed that large animals like cows too can be pretty sure footed- their sheer weight and size notwithstanding. The wonder of nature! (Kazbegi/ Stepantsminda, Georgia, Sept. 2016)

On account of of its remote location in Nepal and the difficult access from India, the Kangchenjunga region is not much explored by trekkers. It has, therefore, retained much of its pristine beauty and natural glory. Here the top portion of the mountain is bathed in golden sunshine. You can see the cloud cover descending upon the mountain. This view was gone is a matter of seconds. (May 2009)

Having spent enough time atop Sihai Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in Manipur, NE India, it's now time to head back down. Here is a final look at the lake atop the Phangrei hill before we commence our descent. There is also a waterfall near here which we did not see. You are also able to spot the hills of neighbouring Burma (Myanmar) from here which I did not know of at the time either. Detailed notes about the Shiai Phangrei hill and the Shirui Lily flower this area is famous for appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

Another section of the Kanchenjunga bathed in brilliant sunshine at Pelling. Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, which stands tall at 8,586 m (28,169 ft) and located along the India-Nepal border in the Himalayas. (May 2009)

My son now decides to join the group in this slightly against the light shot with members of our host family atop the Sihai Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in Manipur, NE India. Detailed notes about the Phangrei hill as well as about the Shirui Lily flower this region is famous for appeared earlier in this album (see previous pictures), so I will save you the commentary and simply let you enjoy the picture. The little kid in the foreground was super cute and kept giving out several interesting poses. It was rather embarrassing for me that the lady with the baby in her arms climbed the steep Phangrei hill faster than me still holding the bacy. Me, a city boy and slightly beyond my prime, was huffing and puffing and ran completely out of steam by the time I got up here. (Note: Some faces have been blurred to protect the privacy of the individuals). (Phangrei, near Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

The mighty Himalayas and the Kanchenjanga can be viewed at close quarters from Pelling. Here is a magnificent view of the twin pronged section of the Kanchenjunga (also spelt Kanchenjanga or Kanchendzonga) right out of our hotel room early one morning. You could stand and stare and stare, but not for long: my bad experience with mountain scenes is the sudden cloud cover: the magnificent view disappears behind clouds in a matter of seconds! (May 2009)

Pelling also forms the base for trekkers, hikers and other hardy souls who choose to undertake the strenuous and arduous mountain treks in West Sikkim. (May 2009)

The sprawl of the small hilltop town of Ukhrul (sometimes called Hunphun) in Manipur, NE India as we drive down the vallley to Pharung village where we were currently staying. Mercifully, no high rises here! My son and I are here in Manipur to attend a wedding, which took place earlier in the day. (see previous pictues earlier in this album). This scene over the mountains with cloudes and a few patches of low hanging white clouds reminded me of Sabah in east Malaysia. (Malaysian Borneo). They call Sabah 'The land below the wind' for this reason, and I found this scene quite similar, barring the urban sprawl of course and the fact that there were a lot more clouds in Sabah. (Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

Another look at the alpine scenery seen from the pergola at the other end of the Kundasang War Memorial. Mount Kinabalu is out there somewhere, behind the small hill in the background, but it is completely obscured by cloud cover. Eeew, I didn't realize that my ample midriff looks so unsightly! (Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia, Nov. 2013)

In the months of winter, Pelling is sometimes covered with a blanket of snow. But in the summer, you are blessed with pacifying scenes like this: alpine views and greenery all around. Love the cluster of houses right up there. (May. 2009)

Misty morning over the Himalayas with the Pokhara (Phewa) lake in the foreground at the sunrise viewpoint at Sarangkot, just outside of Pokhara, Nepal. The viewing platform had got hopelessly crowded despite our very early arrival- but I managed to claw my way past a Korean couple to get this nice space. To our left, as we view this picture, are the Himalayas and their snow capped peaks. Much of the crowd was facing those mountains. I was not too sure which side the sun would rise from- this spot or from the mountains. I ended up waiting my time here, and the sunrise too fortunately happened at this very spot. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). Now isn't that a positively magical spectacle? The fog adds an aura of mystery to this grand spectacle. But just wait till you see the sunrise! (Pokhara, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

I am now on the Sihai Phangrei hill near Ukhrul in NE India on a family outing with members of our host family. I have traveled here with my son to attend a wedding (see previous pictures earlier in this album). One great thing about this outing was that we were also accompanied by the bride and the groom- now man and wife- from yesterday's wedding. Here the bride points out to the valley below. (sorry I had to blur her face to protect her privacy). This Sihai Phangrei mountain joins the Shirui range, famous for Manipur's endemic Shirul Lily flower. This is de facto the national (well, state) flower of Manipur and the steep climb notwithstanding, the locals also celebrate a Shirui Lily Festival in season. (see previous pictures earlier in this album for notes about the Shirui Lily flower). (Note: Some faces have been blurred to protect the privacy of the individuals). Beautiful Alpine scenery on the road from Pharung village to the mountaintop town of Ukhrul (sometimes called Hunphun) in NE India. The clouds hanging about in the valley reminded me of Sabah in East Malaysia. My son and I have just attended a wedding in the hilltop town of Ukhrul in Manipur, NE India and are on our way back to Pharung village, where we were staying. (see previous pictures earlier in this album). Pharung is right across the valley, somewhere around where you see those white clouds. The ride takes about an hour, it could be shorter but for the many curves as we drive down the mountain and a severely potholed mostly unsealed road. (Ukhrul, Manipur, NE India, Jan. 2020)

Our hotel in Pelling had a delightful gift shop selling traditional Sikkimese and Tibetan handicrafts, which were very much Chinese in appearance. Small wonder, Tibet is within a stone's throw from here, which the Chinese claim to be their own. This delightful lady at the gift shop agreed to pose for the Canon along with her lovely daughter.
