Despite the stormy weather and clouds, it is impossible to deny the beauty of this town in the Austrian Alps. Hallstatt is nestled between the edge of Hallstätter and the towering Dachstein mountains. It is Austria’s oldest and possibly most photographed village. Definitely appears to be like a mirage in the Salzkammergut Lake Region. Hope everyone makes it there one day; don't let the weather scare you off!

Soglio, come molti altri villaggi alpini, è meravigliosa sintesi anche estetica di cosa significa vivere in montagna, nell'arco delle stagioni. Luogo emozionante.
Alpine syllabary
Soglio, like many other Alpine villages, is also a wonderful aesthetic synthesis of what it means to live in the mountains, over the seasons. Exciting place.

This photo was taken near Lac Carbon in the Vallée des Merveilles, located within Mercantour National Park. It shows a shallow alpine stream surrounded by rocky terrain, grassy patches, and scattered evergreen trees. In the background, a prominent mountain peak rises under a clear blue sky with some cloud cover. The water is transparent, revealing stones and pebbles beneath the surface. The area is typical of high-altitude alpine environments, with minimal vegetation and exposed geological features.

In the mystical Vallée des Merveilles, nestled among jagged peaks and ancient rocks, Lac Fourca lies in perfect stillness. Its deep blue waters reflect the surrounding alpine landscape like a mirror, while the sparse vegetation and rugged terrain evoke the raw beauty of high-altitude wilderness. Under a clear sky with the moon quietly watching overhead, this scene captures the timeless serenity and geological grandeur of Mercantour National Park—a place where nature whispers through stone and silence.
A Quiet Pond in the High Alps Just beyond Lac Niré, this small alpine pond rests quietly among boulders and steep slopes, reflecting the sky and stone in perfect stillness. Tucked into the glacial cirque of the Gordolasque Valley, it offers a moment of solitude and clarity—where water, rock, and light meet in silent harmony. A hidden corner of Mercantour, untouched and timeless.
Nestled in the rugged heights of Valmasque Valley, this alpine lake reflects the jagged peaks and clear blue sky like a natural mirror. The water is so transparent that submerged rocks are visible beneath the surface, adding depth to the serene composition. Surrounded by steep slopes, gravel shores, and sparse vegetation, this tranquil scene captures the raw elegance of Mercantour National Park. A moment of stillness in the wild heart of the French Alps.

The Grande Dixence Dam is a concrete gravity dam in the Val d'Hérémence, canton of Valais, Switzerland. The reservoir created by the dam is the Lac des Dix.
The dam's crest reaches an altitude of 2,365 meters a.s.l. The reservoir’s water level is somewhat lower and fluctuates considerably over the months (decreasing in winter, lowest in spring, increasing in summer, highest level is reached in September/October). When I was there on 11 October the water level was only 8 meters below maximum (see photo!).

Whenever I arrive by train in St. Moritz (Upper Engadin, Switzerland), I take a photo from the same point of view near the railway station. Meanwhile this has become a tradition. Now, in October the landscape has changed completely into a symphony of fall colors.

– Where Water Meets Stone In the heart of Mercantour National Park, the Gordolasque Valley reveals its quiet beauty—clear alpine streams winding through rocky terrain, framed by steep slopes and mist-covered peaks. The water mirrors the moody sky above, while boulders and sparse vegetation trace nature’s timeless rhythm. A peaceful, high-altitude haven where silence flows with the current.
Col de la Cayolle – Alpine Stillness in Late Summer This high-altitude valley near the Col de la Cayolle in Mercantour National Park reveals a quiet blend of rocky terrain, golden meadows, and scattered wetlands. The stream meanders gently through the grass, reflecting the soft light of a partly cloudy sky. Towering peaks rise in the distance, casting shadows across the slopes—a serene moment where the rugged meets the delicate in the heart of the Alps.

The valley of the river Reuss in the Canton of Uri (Central Switzerland) is the northern access to the Gotthard Pass, one of the major transit routes across the Alps (for both motor vehicles and railways). I took the picture between Altdorf and Erstfeld, when hiking on the so called "Via Gottardo".

The story behind the image:
Found this image in the 2016 archives. :) Some friends and me used to travel to the Alps every year for cycling in the mountain passes. With a 'base camp' in Bormio we conquered the surrounding passes (Gavia 2652m, Stelvio 2758m) over the long weekend. This shot was taken when descended from Passo Gavia back to Bormio, in the late afternoon hours. The DSLR was tied to my bike's handlebar. :)
On 1-2-June I'll be there again, now with a better photo gear...keep fingers crossed that we'll have the same wonderful weather!

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.
This photo shows a beautiful view on the way back from Toti waterfall to Arsha waterfall. The golden autumn colours of the trees contrast beautifully with the rugged, rocky slopes and the snow-capped mountains in the background. The sun illuminates the leaves, giving nature an almost magical look. Such landscapes make the walk between these waterfalls impressive not only because of the water, but also because of the surrounding nature and the ever-changing views. A truly picturesque moment in the mountains!
In the secluded heights of Valmasque Valley, a pristine alpine lake lies perfectly still, mirroring the jagged cliffs and brilliant blue sky above. The water’s clarity reveals submerged stones near the shore, while the surrounding rocky terrain and steep ridges frame this tranquil scene with dramatic elegance. Captured in Mercantour National Park, this image is a testament to the quiet majesty of the French Alps—where silence speaks and nature reflects its own grandeur.
This photo captures the pristine beauty of Lac de Gaube, nestled in the French Pyrenees near Cauterets. Taken from the rocky shoreline , the lake reveals stunning shades of blue and green, reflecting its depth and underwater vegetation. Steep forested slopes rise dramatically around the lake, creating a natural amphitheater of pine-covered mountains. In the foreground, rocks and shrubs frame the scene, while a few hikers appear on the left, adding scale and life to the landscape. The bright sky and scattered clouds enhance the clarity of the water and the crispness of the autumn light. This image evokes the peaceful grandeur of high-altitude wilderness, where water, forest, and mountain meet in perfect harmony

This small lake lies just beyond Baisse du Basto, in the heart of the Mercantour National Park. Surrounded by jagged rocks and patches of alpine grass, the lake reflects the cloudy sky above, creating a calm and mysterious atmosphere. The rugged terrain and quiet water give the scene a wild, untouched feeling—perfect for hikers seeking solitude and raw beauty in the high mountains.
This photo was taken from the Pas des Arpettes (approx. 2511 m), a mountain pass in the Mercantour National Park. The foreground shows a rocky slope with scattered stones and tufts of alpine grass. A visible trail winds through the middle ground, leading into a wide valley. In the background, layers of mountain ridges stretch across the horizon, partially obscured by dramatic cloud formations. The terrain is typical of high-altitude alpine zones, with minimal vegetation and exposed geological features. The weather was dynamic at the time of capture, with shifting light and cloud cover adding depth to the scene
