Photography allows me to wander with a purpose :-)

HFF! Justice Matters! No one is above the law!

zinnia, little theater garden, raleigh, north carolina

For over 4,000 years Mother Nature has thrown everything she had at this tree... Unbearable cold, blizzards, gale force winds, drought, searing heat, earthquakes, and unrepentant tourists, and The Guardian has weathered every storm, every threat, every challenge and remained standing, though it succumbed to inevitable mortality over 500 years ago.

This ancient bristlecone pine, situated with one other tree on the edge of a steep slope in the White Mountains has been the subject of countless photographs under a variety of conditions. I was here with a group for an astrophotography workshop, and although I am pleased with some of the images I captured later that night, this one is the one that stands out above all others.

During the last weekend in August, the daytime high temperatures - even at 9,000' elevation - were above 80° F, and at nearly 8 PM, still holding in the upper-60s, while Bishop and Big Pine in the Owens Valley below, roasted in the 90s and 100s. The heat of the valley combined with the cool air crossing the ridge tops above the Sierras to the west create interesting weather and clouds in the late afternoon, which seemed daunting initially, but cleared soon after sunset to allow for clear skies when it was time to capture the galactic core of the Milky Way above.

The 30 second exposure here allows us to see the way the clouds are rolling in over Great Oyster Bay. I would classify this as minimalistic despite the three layers in the composition. If you enlarge it you'll see the lights of scattered houses along the shore.

The district road R2 from Langenerling to Moosham was upgraded at the end of the 1990s. At that time, the district of Regensburg purchased a 10 m wide strip. This was unique at the time and allowed a row of trees to be planted in the area, which was poor in trees. Thus, a total of 96 winter lime trees were planted on the approx. 2 km long section. This row of lime trees can be seen from far away.

It is the presence of milky fog that allows me to control the scenography here and emphasize the depth of the scene.

For a separate the foreground and theatrical backdrop as much as possible.

With a closed aperture, which is necessary here, this can be done with only a few tricks.

For example, in cinema we used pyrotechnics - the effect of smoke and spotlights.

in general, I am satisfied with the result of the picture, given that it is from a boat that rocks and floats with the current, and the stream moves along the bridge. A kaleidoscope in one word, changing rhythms every second..

- just have time to compose your composition !

Happy April Fools Day!

My boss kindly allowed me to leave work early yesterday to catch the beautiful sunsets we have been having on the west coast of Scotland. I decided to head to Craigendoran Pier near Helensburgh, an old childhood haunt as I went to high school there. The sun came down perfectly over Greenock and Port Glasgow and I pushed the camera for some very long exposures. This is the first of 5 photos I will upload here. Have a great weekend :)

Like North Falls further upstream, Middle North Falls has certain characteristics which one could argue give it an edge when comparing it to the park's main attraction, South Falls. Despite being considerably shorter, Middle North Falls is a markedly amorphous waterfall which changes physical shape in a very dramatic way as the volume of water in North Silver Creek changes. The 106 foot tall falls take the form of a narrow column of water during the summer months, funneled to perhaps 5 feet wide at most by a narrow runnel in the bedrock. With greater stream flow in the winter and spring months however, North Silver Creek sheets out across the 60-foot wide creek bed and turns the falls into a broad curtain of water, with part of the falls impacting on a twisting chute of basalt which then slides to join the more volumnous half of the creek in the plunge pool.

Middle North Falls is one of four waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park which features a trail which traverses behind the falling water. Unlike the other three, the trail leading behind Middle North Falls is a dead-end, constructed purely to allow access to additional views of the falls.

I'll be a bit busy today. My daughters car is acting up so I have to help her take it in for service. I'll catch up with you all later. Have a great day!

Colourful tealights which are much too beautiful to be lit. I keep telling my friends "don't give me beautiful candles" ! But they often do ....

Hard to image that using a tripod to take a photo of this fountain would be a problem, but yes it was... I was told I could not use it by a security gaurd because it was on private property. Oh well... I just walked out into the street (no traffic whatsoever) and took the photo from there!

Some interesting facts about the Black-Necked stilt:

They feed in both salt and fresh water on half webbed feet that allow them to swim, although they rarely do.

They have the second-longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by flamingos.

I haven't had much luck with Egrets lately until this morning when this beauty allowed me to watch for over an hour. Beautiful. A gorgeous morning too and no wind! The calm before the storm.

I bought this bee themed water jug from a craft potter called Berber Dister based in the idyllic village of Cromarty on the Black Isle just north of Inverness. The artist had made her mark on the base and I'm hoping that one day it will rival Clarise Cliff's work for value. We are allow dreams.

Have a great Saturday SOS friends.

Yesterday I took my old camera and old lens to wander around in the rain. The maple trees that were here grow tall and too close to the house. But for now we won’t have to make a decision.

Shooting in RAW allows for a lot of mistakes. Mostly, however, this is about as shot.

A Magpie in a Eucalyptus tree, Moonshine Park, New Zealand. Between 1864 and 1874 1,000 birds were brought over from south-eastern Australia and released across New Zealand in order to help control insect pests. The Australian Magpies are not related to the Magpies in the rest of the world. Now common across rural New Zealand and also suburban areas with pine trees, macrocarpa and eucalypts. The Magpie is a strongly territorial bird and during the nesting season they have been known to dive-bomb cyclists or pedestrians who stray too close to a nest. I have come to know these birds in Moonshine Park and they allow me to pass them on top of the stopbank at close quarter.

As well as trees and leaves and many other things...a lake allows that perspective....

I can't stop allowing myself to go back to Smithville to capture this tree. I love to photograph it in all the seasons and one important thing I have learned is to never take it for granted. I had a very special tree in the Smithville Lake area that was taken down without notice and I regret not photographing it more. I guess this can apply to many things in life (family, friends, etc). So here I am, early in the morning mesmerized by the shape of the extended branches along the country fence line and the glow of the sky. I ended up blurring out the grass to give the sole focus on the this magnificent living specimen. I am just awed by the shapes here as if it were drawn on the page.

What a wonderful Christmas we had at our house! I hope yours was just as special. And now what, well after Christmas sales right?!! lol Yeah my RL sister and I have hit a few places.

By the way, if you're out there shopping be careful y'all.

We're still in the holiday season and as Christmas is just too important to last for such a short time I'll sign off with a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year before I'm off to Best Buy!

Once again, thank you Lam Erin and all the staff at Cherishville for the hard work and allowing us a wonderful place to take our pics.

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is ostrich

Hello Everyone, I love the noir style and for a woman, the look is a sultry dress, gloves and a cigarette with the smoke rising up causing the long lashes to flutter, or is it the good looking person at the end of the bar staring at you. :) Thank you for allowing me to share my photo with you. Have a lovely day.

The darkest hour is the time when we all get together,

dancing and singing, laughing and crying;

until one man starts dying.

"Disgusting!" says the weak man, "Horrifying!" said the next;

Don't they know that they too are next?

Corpses and blood are everywhere;

just another night, for a bunch of millionaires.

in order to make it, you need to be strong;

for prayers are not allowed here.

praying is for the cattle, the sheep;

and we are above those who are asleep.

NEW: STAY IN TOUCH

Before & After

If we allow ourselves to stay amazed and astounded at the vibrant instants of every day and do not feel ashamed of admitting to being speechless or dumbfounded sometimes... we can uncover unsuspected sparkling gems hidden all around us..

This little lovely is one of four Carolina wrens that have been gifted my yard as their territory by their parents. As usual, the parents raised several broods in the yard this year. Once the last brood was old enough to be independent, the parents moved on.

These little wrens are more friendly than their parents were, they come very close to me when I am in the yard and they allow me to approach them as well. If it ends up that there are two pair, perhaps both pair will nest in the yard. That has happened before. They chose different sides of the house of course, still it was nice to have so many year-round and all of the extra activity during nesting season.

Enjoy your day and happy snapping.

Six stamen are featured here, emerging from the lily's center and backdropped by the glorious petals.

Stamens consist of their long stems called filaments, and then end in the dark anthers which are covered in yellow pollen.

This immersive image was yesterday's post without the white frame and also cropped horizontally...

I admit it. I am in love with the beauty and design of flowers that macro lenses allow us to experience. I see God's handiwork in nature and I am moved.

A black swallowtail, Papilio polyxenes, hatched out recently, in my neighbor's lepidopterarium. He grows fennel in the yard, and that is one of the favored host plants of black swallowtails. Wild butterflies oviposit on the fennel and when caterpillars become visible, they are bagged (still on the plant) in mesh bags that exclude predators and parasites but allows the caterpillar to feed.

Today he released two black swallowtails, one male and one female--this is the female. The female settled on the fennel plant--shown here--the male immediately went off to celebrate his freedom.

A black swallowtail caterpillar was shown in a previous post, and it is copied into the first comment, below.

I don't see many Song Sparrows at my home here in Yakima County, Washington, and when I do they usually do not stay out in the open long enough for me to photograph them. This one allowed me to photograph him/her. IMG_5108

Cresting a hill near Whitewood, a 3-pack of 40s are on the head end of the Belle Job. To make matters better, the lead engine was a heck of a smoker on even the slightest hill. This chase allowed for great pictures in an area that most railfans don’t ever go to.

Here, just by chance, we're caught, in the shade

staring, surprised, into eyes of the past

while watching the ducks as they circle the pond

It seems they are hands on a clock sweeping time

where silence is gentler,... because now we are friends

Today, on this bench, lost men will linger,

while waiting for nothing, and no place to go

Once we had claimed this 'our' place to hold hands,

planning a future that never began

Children we were with the world at command

I'm glad we aren't talking in circles, .. like then

Other children are playing in the rust afternoon,

zippered up tight, against winter wind

Talking of children..you tell me there's two

You show me a photo,…then, I share a few

I am all out of bread, as the sun starts to fade

taking away all the stains of the day

East of the bandstand shadows grow long,

falling in corners like memories do

We've learned to know twilight can be bittersweet

And taste what dim recall has only allowed

Goodbyes are said, and you then, kiss my cheek, ..

then you turn and you wave, as you are crossing the street

Left wondering now, where those lost men will go,

it worries my brow, what lost men will eat

A shadow of you, is still left in the park, …

of us holding hands, as it starts to get dark

I leave a few dollars here, on our bench

Checking my watch,… I will leave no regrets.

(While Feeding the Ducks by Carrie Richards)

I bought a little hot shoe astrotracer for my camera and thought I would try it out before I find a real Milky Way to shoot.

It moves the sensor in the camera using a GPS signal and moves the sensor along with the movement of the stars allowing for long exposures without star trails. This way you can lower the ISO on the camera to prevent noise. It seemed to work pretty well but does blur the foreground so that needed to be masked in separately.

I thought I would do some light painting of the tree so you could actually see it.

remember how it used to be

when the sun would fill up the sky

remember how we used to feel

those days would never end

those days would never end

remember how it used to be

when the stars would fill the sky

remember how we used to dream

those nights would never end

those nights would never end

it was the sweetness of your skin

it was the hope of all we might have been

that fills me with the hope to wish

impossible things

but now the sun shines cold

and all the sky is grey

the stars are dimmed by clouds and tears

and all i wish

is gone away

all i wish

is gone away

all i wish

is gone away

Old fishing boat on the shingle bank at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England.

A scene from the many tracks that cross Hillock Wood, Buckinghamshire. The mist certainly helped soften the mood and allows the shapes of the trees to stand out.

The band of clouds moving in added to the mystic along Oxbow Bend. Was great being here with no one else at this time, allowing it easy to move along the riverbank.
