ringo basically allows us to have no boundaries. he sticks his head in our food; he sleeps on our pillows (until we shut him in another room, anyway); he follows me into the bathroom & (a) sits behind me while i use the toilet, (b) stands on the sink while i brush my teeth, & (c) perches on the edge of the tub while i shower; he's even sitting on the desk right now in front of the keyboard. he responds to no discipline -- even the vet commented on how "feisty" he is & how unlike other cats he is. coins in a can, loud noises, taps on the noise, water in a spray bottle -- nothing.

My Great Aunt was a magnificent lady. She was always a pioneer ahead of her time, exploring the world in her 20s, running her own school in her 30s, became a Land Girl in her 40s and so on. Amazing lady!

These photos have been particularly damaged by time and I think her camera was on it's last legs as many are blurred, so please don't judge them too harshly!!
I've only just discovered these slides and have attempted to restore them to the best of my ability. However, they are clearly very damaged so please do not criticise the quality!! But they are too good to be locked away to be damaged further and I'd like them shared with the world

Acinonyx jubatus
The cheetah plays an important role as a predator on the African savannah. The fastest animal on land, the cheetah can reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour over short distances. A sleek body, flexible backbone, long legs, non-retractable claws, and muscular tail assist the cheetah during high speed chases. The dark tear mark below a cheetah’s eye, called a malar stripe, attracts the sunlight and keeps the glare of the sun out of its eyes. Once the cheetah is within striking distance of its prey, it swipes at the prey’s hind legs with its front paw and strong dewclaw to trip and knock it to the ground. Then it closes off the prey’s windpipe to suffocate it. Exhausted after the chase, the cheetah must rest for a while to recover.

Whether the red panda is more closely related to the giant panda or the raccoon has puzzled scientists for years. Made for a life in the trees, the red panda travels through the canopy with ease. Not only is the panda a great climber, it is also an amazing jumper, clearing distances up to five feet. Hair on the bottom of its feet keeps the panda from slipping on branches.
Red pandas spend up to 13 hours a day foraging for bamboo, eating only the youngest, most tender leaves.
Pandas have a small, thumb-like bone that sticks out from the wrist that helps them grasp bamboo shoots.
A thick, furry tail that wraps around its body protects the panda from the chilly weather.

The females are larger and have longer bills than the males. This allows them to forage on more deeply buried, slightly larger prey. Consequently feeding ranges differ between sexes in parts, and it is thought that males may also select lower quality habitat to avoid competition.
Status: Winter visitor to coastal estuaries from October to April from Russia and Scandinavia
Conservation Concern: Amber-listed in Ireland as the majority of the population winter at less than ten sites. The European population is considered to be Secure.
Identification: At first glance resembles a smaller version of a Curlew - similar shape (long legs and neck) and plumage (grey/brown with streaking). The long, straight and slightly upturned bill, however is quite different. Summer plumaged birds occur sometimes, showing varying amounts of orange/brick red on the body feathers. Bar-tailed can easily be confused with the slightly longer-legged and more elegant Black-tailed Godwit, however in flight, Bar-tailed always shows fairly uniform, grey brown upperwings, a long white rump and a finely barred tail (Black-tailed is strongly patterned with black and white wings and tail and a square white rump). Usually seen feeding along outer shoreline of estuaries. Sometimes in large flocks.

Call: Harsh/nasal two note 'cewee-cewee'
Diet: Feed along the tidal edge, or in shallow water (up to 15 cm depth). They usually commence feeding on an ebbing tide, and feed continuously for up to 6 hours. Polychaete worms, particularly lugworms, form a large proportion of their diet. On the muddier estuaries, where lugworms may be absent, they take ragworms and bivalves.
Breeding: Breeds in northern Norway, Finland and further to the north and east.
Wintering: Wintering distribution entirely coastal. They are largely confined to estuaries, with largest numbers recorded on sandy estuaries. Small numbers recorded using non-estuarine coastline.
Where to see: Dundalk Bay in County Louth, Dublin Bay in County Dublin, Wexford Harbour & Slobs in County Wexford, Lough Foyle in County Derry and Strangford Lough in County Down support highest numbers (1,500-2,500 birds).

Ok, allow me to demonstrate the depth and breadth of my bumliness. Ralph had chemo earlier in the day. He started mowing our yard, the steering on the mower broke and he hit a tree. He went to the farm and welded a repair, fixed the mower and finished mowing. I'm pretty sure that makes me the reigning heavy-weight champ of all the bums.
