Sunset in five moments...

Realised I'd nearly missed this alignment, and it was so still this afternoon .. there we're a veritable host of mozzies, myself and a couple fisho's to take in todays symphony on Picnic Island, Lake Illawarra - Shellharbour

Looks normal, right? Look at your own keyboard... notice anything different? Okay, maybe you don't. But try actually typing on this and it all becomes far too apparent. The whole of the bottom row of letters (Z, X, C...) is one too far to the right. The Z should be below and between A and S, not S and D.

You're looking at a brand new Dell Vostro 1310, ordered the day after its released, and delivered on 30th April 2008 in the UK.

They keys are all there. Shift, \|, Z, X... its just that the left shift is too big, forcing everything over too far. The Z has to be between the A and S... look on ANY other keyboard and that's where it sits. This is not a US/UK layout issue, just a general monumental flaw.

UPDATE 1st May 2008 5pm: I phoned Dell for 20 minutes and they have confirmed that this affects all new Vostro 1310s in the UK. Oh dear!! They're hoping they can just replace the keyboards, though the guy on the phone said it was a 'motherboard' problem... I can't imagine that though.

UPDATE: 2nd May 2008 1:30pm - Kerry from Dell has informed me that Dell are working on a resolution for the issue. The official statement is as follows:

------

A limited number of Vostro 1310 and

1510 in Europe have been sent out with the wrong keyboard

layout. We are working diligently to offer a solution to

impacted customers and correct the error. Once a solution

is in place, we will be contacting impacted customers

directly to both apologise and instruct them on next steps.

We are still investigating this issue and will come back

with more detailed information as soon as possible. We have

made a mistake here and will be acting as quickly as

possible to find a satisfactory solution for our customers.

-----

UPDATE 8th May: direct2dell.com/smallbusiness/archive/2008/05/08/europe-v...

UPDATE 9th May:

Okay, so they're sending out new keyboards. But it seems to me like a quick fix which is imperfect rather than applying the correct fix. Here's what I just posted to their blog:

---

[Y]ou've gone and kept the large left shift key and moved the \| key

to the right of the row, rather than making the left shift key

smaller... why?

You mention it appearing on more systems here... I will have to take

your word for that, but all 6 keyboards I can see in front of me right

now have a small left shift key and the \| key to the left of the z.

Why reinvent the wheel? If there's a good ergonomic reason for this

choice then that's great, but I can just sense that I'm going to fit

this new keyboard into my laptop and be (a lot less, but still a

little) frustrated with it.

Here's the logic for why the |\ should be on the left not the right:

* Look at where a touch typists fingers little fingers sit

* Note the distance the little fingers have to travel to reach a shift key

* when we have a small left shift, the 'A' is only half a regular

sized key away from the shift key. A nice small distance to travel

* again with the small left left key, the big left shift key is

only half a regular sized key from the colon/semi-colon on which the

right little finger sits.

* however, if you apply the layout you suggest, the left shift key

is under half the right shift key

* ... but the left shift key is now one and a half keys away from

the semi-colon. The right little finger has a long distance to travel,

making reaching for it take longer and be more of a pain.

So there's a very convincing argument to go for the standard UK layout

with small left shift and \| on the left. What's the convincing

counter argument that lead you to your chosen design?

I'm presuming that what you've applied here is the cost-effective

quick-fix and that there is no other argument for your choice. I can

completely understand this choice given the circumstances, but I don't

think its going to work for me I'm afraid.

['Ottovelo' commented I should just buy a Mac. I have removed his stupid Apple fanboy remark. Seriously... why not say but an Acer, Asus, Lenovo,, Samsung... and whilst we're on that, where's the delete key on a Mac? And why are " and @ in the wrong places on UK mac keyboards? Not as bad a design flaw as this, but utterly frustrating none the less.]

[

DEAR murilo A, dgua, korobeiniki, jorgepinto, cliph, mentor972, ramobjesus, raphy, zolinovat and every other MAC FANBOY out there,

Thank you sooooo much for your kind advice in telling me to 'get a mac'. Its so awfully sweet of you to be so kind and helpful.

Yes, I have considered buying a mac before. My wife has a mac which I bought her, my dad also has a mac which I bought him.

I hate my wife's mac. It has a backspace button but no delete button. It has one mouse button and forces me to press a key with the button rather than having a right mouse button. The @ and " are in the wrong places for UK users. You can't make windows fullscreen. Its slow. It crashes when playing DVDs. We have to cover it up at night as its glow 'throbs' and doesn't let me get any sleep.

Also, this laptop cost me £650. A similarly spec'd mac would have cost £949 (and that's still not as good spec as this).

Lots of love,

Jake

PS: I've deleted a lot of your helpful 'buy a mac' comments from this page. If you want to advertise, go do it in your own space, not mine

PPS: If you fancy trying to convert me you can of course send me a Mac for free. Just don't be surprised if a video of me smashing it to bits appears on the Internet soon after.

This species needs quite a lot of sunshine and higher temperatures and if everything goes according to plan, they reach their adult form in early August. With poor weather, the development is slowed down and any specimens which haven't reached adult form when it is time to hibernate will die as it needs to be in the final form to be able to survive the winter.

Name: Lewis Tovier

Alias: The Black Dove

Alignment: Justice, through grey means

Abilities-

Incredible training, proficiency with bladed weapons, medical expertise.

Origin-

Lewis Tovier was a medical student growing up in New Billundsberg. For the first 20 years of his life, he was generally happy, having a warm relationship with his family and fiancé Gretchen. However, money laundering from the infamous Torched Skull gang resulted in an accident that led to the death of his parents and older sister. Lewis’ grief drove him to pull out of medical school, becoming obsessed with getting justice for his family. After his fiancé left him, unable to cope with his obsession, Lewis travelled to the mythical country of Malalatva, where he received training from some of the greatest fighters in the world. After returning home to New Billundsberg, Lewis, using a mask given to him by Gretchen for Halloween, planned a crusade to take down the Torched Skull gangs operation, and liberate his home from their leader, Robert Octavian.

The old alignment to Mt Gambier can be seen curving off in the background having closed in 1995, coming up to nearly 30 years now.

High above eye level, San Francisco’s architectural history often reveals itself most clearly in the ceiling. These three views focus on the richly ornamented ceilings of the Sylvester House, a rare surviving Victorian interior where pattern, proportion, and light were treated as essential parts of daily life rather than decoration alone.

Painted motifs repeat with deliberate rhythm: botanical tracery, geometric borders, star fields, and medallions designed to guide the eye upward and steady the room. The craftsmanship rewards slow looking. Nothing here shouts. Instead, color is restrained and confident—soft creams, muted blues, oxidized golds, and warm earth tones balanced against deep shadow. Light fixtures are not focal points so much as anchors, organizing the space and reinforcing symmetry.

In San Francisco, interiors like this survive quietly, often overlooked in favor of façades and street scenes. Yet they tell a deeper story about how Victorian homes were meant to be experienced: vertically, ceremonially, and with an attention to detail that assumed time and care from both maker and viewer. The ceilings do not compete with the room; they complete it.

Photographed with an emphasis on alignment, texture, and tonal balance, these images document the Sylvester House as a living artifact of the city’s domestic architecture—one that continues to reward patience, curiosity, and an upward glance.

Alignment Color Series

THought i'd post this, despite the obvious symmetrical alignment issues - which is actually more to do with the architecture due to the angles of its structure. Love the subtle colouring due to this side being in the shade.

Well, this is not my best work. It was handheld, 05:38, in the morning, grabbed before the clouds rolled it.

Shot taken at sunset on September 6th 2012, from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3,538 m), Italy.

This shot was motivated by four factors: the quality of light, the concave specular geometry between the summit crest of the Mount Croce Rossa (3.546 m) and the ridge of the mountain below, the alignment with the distant Monte Rosa massif (4.634 m).

Last but not least, the high presence of snow on this side, which is quite rare (except on winter, of course) as this face of the Corce Rossa is exposed to the southwest.

The Monte Rosa massif is indeed very far from the Rocciamelone, yet are clearly visible three peaks: Dufourspitze, Zumsteinspitze and Signalkuppe... on this last peak I guess we all know it is located the highest refuge-observatory of Europe

Apparently 7 planets were supposed to be visible in a line today. I missed the best time to view and with light pollution and not having the right kit I couldn't get a photo of them.

I've been fascinated with pyramids ever since I first discovered them when I was young. (No I wasn't the guy that found the pyramids, I discovered them through photos in a books)

Maybe that's why I love doing these mirrored time stacks of sun/moon sets like this.

The apparent alignment of layers of ochre and the Milky Way at the Ochre Cliffs north of Lyndhurst, South Australia. Lit by moonlight. Processed with a daylight white balance for star colours in Lightroom, Tamron lens.

The SS Badger sails into Ludington Michigan with the setting sun in the background. This juxaposition occurred because of the sun's position in early October and the fact that the Badger was 25 minutes late into port.

The Badger was built in 1953 and is the last large coal burning steamship in the US. The Badger shuttles both cars and passengers between Michigan and Wisconsin and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2013 season will end on October 13.

Most people probably don't know this but it's something I learned in college. If you get on the center railing of the steps to the Central Library and look south you will see that everthing from that center railing to the Chase Tower and everyting in between are perfectly aligned.

This 3 panel panoramic shows the current alignment of five planets and the moon, from the Dover Patrol Memorial at St. Margaret's Bay, on the White Cliffs of Dover. The lights of Calais (France) are visible on the horizon. Taken at 6.32am on the morning of 3rd February, with a Fuji XT-1 and Samyang 12mm at f/2.

Straight out of the memory card to your eyes cropped and that's it!

Press L to get aligned

This took a bit of patience and time to get lined up, I know it's not perfectly lined up but it was getting pretty frustrating. First, framed up with the pylon with Tokina @ 11mm, change lenses, line up with the circuit board at 46mm without moving the camera and compare line up with pylon. Then, Click remote, expose circuit board, cap lens, change lens re-zoom and focus, while capped, blind. Uncap the lens, expose the pylon, cap the lens, pack up. Walk to the car a few blocks away, drive 1/4 mile, set up in a drainage tunnel blindly, uncap lens, trace figure, click remote, bing! Now a cwb and all is good.

After all of that, I noticed my exposed skin bottom right, after originally posting with finger in, I've decided to go with the crop, it's cleaner, any prints will be full sized.. naddafinga!

Of course I had to post the picture of the full eclipse tonight. It was spectacular. When the eclipse began, the moon was as white as always, but as the earth shaded the sun and the shadow fell upon the moon, that moon turned red. I learned that it is because the light from the sun bends around the edges of the earth like a sunrise, but around the entire perimeter of the earth and casts a red orange glow onto the moon. The coincidence of this alignment boggles my mind.

Corky did me a huge favour here by coming up in pretty much the dead centre of the pool, so everything sort of lines up. Her vertical spins are very impressive.
