Outfit Monogram Exaggeration

Dubbed as "the first lady of naval cryptology", Agnes was inducted into the National Security Hall of Fame for the extraordinary work she did in code breaking.

HER CONNECTION TO WESTERVILLE

Agnes' family (father Dr. Gustav Meyer and mother Lucy Meyer) moved to Westerville in 1895 when her father accepted a position at Otterbein University as a professor of music. From 1901-1909, the family lived in this home, 110 S. State St. In 1909, the home was used as the headquarters for the Anti-Saloon League, and today the home is part of the Local History Center and Anti-Saloon League Museum that you are standing in.

HER EDUCATION

She graduated from Ohio State University in 1911 with majors in mathematics, physics, foreign languages and music. After gradutation, she taught math and music in Texas.

HER ENLISTMENT DURING WWI

Upon entry of the U.S. into World War I, Agnes enlisted in the United States Navy and was ordered to report to the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. It was during her stint in the navy that she began to work on what became her profession until she retired, cryptology.

HER CO-INVENTION

After she left active duty in the Navy, she was hired as a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy. She entered a period of training that landed her at American Black Chamber in NYC, which was the first peacetime code-breaking agency. These training opportunities led her to be proficient in code-breaking and to co-invent a cipher machine used in the 1920s by the U.S. Navy. Meyer was a civilian employee in national security operations until her mandatory retirement in 1959 when she reached age 70.

HER CODE-BREAKING

In 1924, she began work on the Japanese Red Book. Her breaking of this important code led to a greater understanding of the depth of knowledge the Japanese had about our navy operations in the Pacific and actually led to the capture of two Americans who were sending U.S. secrets to the Japanese. In 1930, the Japanese changed their fleet operational code, and it took Driscoll and her team three years to break the new code. However, this task was one of the most difficult cryptanalysis tasks ever performed up to that date.

HER SISTER

One of Agnes’ close associates was her sister, Margaret Hamilton. She was 8 years yonger, and also a veteran of World War I and worked on JN-25 and Enigma with her more renowned sister.

HER BURIAL

She died in 1971 and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Agnes: Thank you Suedehead and Little Girl a.k.a. Cristina, Barbara, Barbara Cristina, Barbara Jean... I know I don't deserve to have this dress because I am a brat. I am sorry for behaving so badly. I love this dress so much that I am never going to take it off!

Me: Well, Pia will be happy to know that she can keep the knitted dress you ordered all to herself.

Agnes: What?

Agnes' wig finally came in at the beginning of August. It was almost impossible to find the right style, in the right color! But eventually I lucked up on Goodyblythe's wig W224. It matches Amanda and my hair almost perfectly!

But Agnes still has her brown eyes here. It's almost time for her to get her greys!

Agnes Marie – AKA Aggie, Agatha, Little Ra-Ra (1 of two members of the Ra-Ra Sisterhood). Notorious for falling asleep while I’m talking to her. She does it very quickly. Her eyes just close and then she is out. Extremely vocal. She gained the name little Ra-Ra, because she says Ra-Ra. It’s the cutest thing.

Their fur is both their best and worst feature. Very thick and very messy. Wearing dark clothes requires the use of a lint brush before we leave the house.

Today was the birthday of Agnès. As a gift, I fixed the makeup. Over time the varnish had yellowed in some areas, I had to sand and back to make up ...

Congratulations Agnès, 3 years old together and for many more!
