One of the first New Generation Scania 8x4 concrete mixers. Along with being in the new `Breedon` colours – it is certainly the first one with the German `Schwing Stetter` mixer unit in the UK.

A cloudy Thursday evening finds 56 049 waiting at Foxhall Junction's signals with a load of aggregates while 58 002 Daw Mill Colliery has been stabled on the long siding down to Milton Park with MGR empties

Emerging out of the forest off the Machen branch at Park Junction we see 66096/66002 with 6Z85 1409 Machen to Little Kimble.

The train is about an hour late mainly because the schedule allowed insufficient time at Machen for loading the train being formed of 34 JNAs hence the need for double heading.

I think both this and the Foster Yeoman livery suited the class rather well and certainly a lot better than the current bland Aggregate Industries scheme.

Mendip Rail's 59002 Alan J Day makes short work of the 1 in 100 gradient while ascending Dauntsey Bank at Tockenham Wick with a couple of thousand tonnes of Limestone known as 7Z12 11.42 Merehead to (Royal) Wootton Bassett.

The image was taken from bridge MLNI 8565 on Trow Lane, the view of course now blighted by the Great Western Main line electrification infrastructure which has been present in this location since 2017.

Going in the other direction is an unidentified FGW HST working 1C30 11.30 Paddington to BTM which will pass the site of Dauntsey station (closed 1965) just before diving under the B4069 road bridge.

To the far right of the road bridge, the area known locally as 'Dauntsey lock', a tall red brick chimney marks the location of 'Dauntsey Guns' - a business selling firearms that is described on their website as 'Wiltshire's friendliest gun shop' - blimey, imagine what the county's 'least friendly' gun shop must be like! Personally I'm surprised and a little worried that Wiltshire has any gun shops.

Our old friend 7Z12 runs from Somerset, through (Royal) Wootton Bassett and up to Swindon where the loco swaps ends to head 'back to Bassett' as the customer Johnsons Aggregates yard is only accessible from the down line.

Until I noticed the chimney and started investigating it I was going to go for a "Bank"-related angle. y'know the kind of thing;

"Giving a good Account of itself 59002 Alan J (bank holi-) Day makes quite a Statement as it Charges up Dauntsey Bank to Transfer another load of stone to the customer" - on Balance I'm glad I didn't, and you can take that to the...errr..Post Office!

My image caption of course references the 1978 Broadway Musical and 1982 film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton 'The Best Little Wh***house in Texas'.

Which reminds me of one of my favourite jokes - the one about the dyslexic pimp who mistakenly bought a warehouse - classic.

Well OK, seeing as how you've asked, my favourite joke is the one about the 2 cannibals having a meal - the first cannibal says "I don't like my mother-in-law" and the second cannibal replies "well just eat the chips!" - still funny after 50 years, no?, strange it didn't go down too well at my brother's wedding either, especially with her side of the family...

American Aggregates was one of the leading suppliers of construction materials during the 20th Century, with facilities and quarries from New Mexico to New York. Three of those operations were located in southern Michigan and employed a motive power roster comprised of eight diesels and four ex-interurban freight motors. From a railfan perspective, the most interesting American Aggreates-owned Michigan property was a very large digging in the Brighton / South Lyon area (25 miles northwest of Detroit). At one time or another, six different locomotives were used to work the quarry and haul loads to a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad. The roster included three 65-Ton Whitcomb center-cabs, a 50-Ton Porter center-cab and two scavenged ex-interurban freight motors.

The Brighton site was also home to one other large unusual "critter." It was an ungainly looking freight motor whose actual history still remains shrouded. One report shows that it was built in 1920 by American Car & Foundry for the Interstate Public Service's electrified lines. A second report suggests the electric loco was built in 1917 for the Kansas City, Kaw Valley & Western. The two histories converge on the Indiana Railroad's roster of 1931. The locomotive underwent a major rebuilding and became Southern Indiana Railway #750 (an IRR subsidiary). Sold in 1948 to American Aggregates, the #750 received another heavy rebuilding at the hands of Greenville Manufacturing Co. in Ohio. The installation of a diesel engine was a major component of the 54-ton locomotive's modernization.

DETAILS FOR THIS VEHICLE.

Date : 05/06/1987.

Type : Bogie Aggregate Hopper.

Weight : 87.9t GLW / 22.4t Tare.

Number : HALL 13704.

Number Series : HALL 13700 to HALL 13712.

Builder : Standard Wagon Co. Heywood Works.

TOPS Code : PHA (later JGA).

ADDITIONAL NOTES.

Hall Aggregates (South Coast) Ltd had a fleet of 13 PHA wagons that were later coded JGA with a 65 ton capacity. They were built to operate from Newhaven to Crawley and Tolworth carrying sea dredged pea shingle or course sand. The wagons were registered to Hall Aggregates Ltd as can be seen on the yellow private owner wagon plate by the prefix to the wagon number HALL 13xxx, they carried RMC Aggregates branding as RMC was the parent company. Their use out of Newhaven lasted for 12 years (1984-1996). When the traffic ceased they were transferred to the Peak District where RMC had a second fleet of similar wagons working out of Holderness Quarry (Peak Forest) and the wagons became part of a common pool for the local stone traffic.

EWS bought the fleet in 2007 by which time RMC had been bought out by multinational giant 'Cemex' (Cement Mexico Ltd). The practice of buying private owner fleets was usually in an effort to tie the customer to one haulier. That wasn't strictly the case here though as EWS had provided a new fleet of Cemex branded HOA hoppers in 2007 to eliminate remaining 4-wheel hoppers and largely replace the ex RMC fleet, so the acquisition of the ex RMC bogie hopper fleet was part of the same deal (new for old). EWS then started to use the wagons in the South East again but this time on Mendip stone workings and so did DB after they bought out EWS. In more recent years their use has been more in the North West again carrying crushed glass between Tilbury Docks and Ince & Elton glassworks. They have increasingly been getting door reliability issues and are now life expired and starting to be withdrawn for scrap at Warrington.
