... of a near-disaster: This morning, when I came down to put the kettle on, I was greeted with a big puddle in the hall and a very strange noise coming from the downstairs loo. When I opened the door I found water gushing out from the hot-water boiler. It seemed that a pipe had burst. Took me some time to find the main tap (in my landlady's part of the house). Result: the plumber came, fixed the pipe, installed a new boiler and now my landlady and I are hoping that her insurance will pay ... Breakfast at lunchtime, after clearing up the mess and hanging the rags I'd thrown into the puddle out to dry.
Not much of a picture but I felt I just had to do this to record an exciting day of my life.

The aftermath of a fairly big crash on my way to work. I didn't actually frame this shot or even look while I took the pictures. I took out my camera phone and snapped about three pictures as I was driving past.
Strobist info: SB600 M@1/100 snooted aimed at white card rear & on right. Black card acting as 'flags' rear & both sides.
A bum kept his shopping cart next to the grocery store. One day I came back from the beach and saw that the thing had caught on fire, producing the attached results.
I can only wonder if someone got sick of him leaving his stuff there (there's a bit of vigilante justice, or perhaps just kids getting bored and smashing stuff, going on in the neighborhood. I recall a couple of years ago, there was a van parked next to Miss Eggroll #2 for weeks. While waiting for the train to work one morning, I saw that someone had smashed some of the windows out.
The next morning, the person who had been living in the car had put up some scrounged-up posterboard to keep the chill out.
The next day, more windows were smashed. The day after that, they were "fixed."
This happened for a few days until the van finally disappeared. I notied that "they" didn't slash the tires, which is what one would have expected as an obvious target.
The person I was talking to said, "of course not, they wanted them to leave."
A few bottles of pop and lots of empty bottles of Tanduay. I guess we know what people like to drink.

The invention also describes a facility for the application of said method.

Visiting the Frenchman River Valley this afternoon. The swath that was incinerated is vast. But note — the frogs sound strong, and just across the road, the intact prairie. Smouldering areas remain. Much work to be done. But an event like this is complex — it’s not Hurricane Sandy. The prairie needs intermittent fire. Bob and I saw a 13-lined ground squirrel poking out of it’s hole in the middle of a burned out area. The ground was still warm, but the char was surprisingly superficial.
While considerably tamer than the other photos I recently uploaded, this photoshoot made me fall in love with these guys all over again.
