On August 4, 2015 a great storm with winds measured over 100 mph devastated portions of the forest of Leelanau, Michigan near Traverse City, with trees bringing down power lines and closing roads around Glen Arbor. Some of those forests will never fully recover. The piece of Birch log in this set of pictures was chain-sawed by workers out of a tangled heap of trees felled by the storm to clear a popular bike path.
In placing this artifact of the Aftermath of the Leelanau storm in juxtaposition with the Aftermath of Detroit's own slow economic and cultural storm, I hope to set up visual and conceptual tensions at various levels, aesthetic, philosophical, cultural, and ethical, among other possibilities.
I hope this set of images will stimulate and provoke reflection on Disaster and Aftermath, our responses to these, and humanity's place in Nature.

A bunch of kids thought the flat roof of a school would make a good launch pad for May weekend rockets. Their enthusiasm was not shared by everyone and the EMS were called. The kids had scarpered before anyone got there. Here, the responders wrap up the evening.
The progress of a prescribed burn at a nature preserve in southeast Michigan. Though it may look desctructive, fire is a necessary ecological management tool for most ecosystems in the Great Lakes region.
Here is the scene without the CubeDudes and vehicles. Since Marvel is owned by Disney now, no comic is safe from ads for other Disney products. Well, at least it's PoP and not Hannah Montana!
The aftermath of a large condo building fire. It was started because of improper disposal of a cigarette on a balcony. The result was devastating. All 106 homes destroyed and $16.3 million in damages. Thankfully, no humans were killed or seriously injured. I'm not sure about non-humans however (since media tends to not care about that)

The ADP (Aftermath Dislocation Principle), aka The Model Village from Banksy's Dismaland. The Aftermath Dislocation Principle (ADP) is a trilogy of artworks by Jimmy Cauty (formerly of KLF) on a nationwide tour. Each artwork is a 1:87 scale model housed in a shipping container. The models are viewed through observation ports in the sides of the container between 11am and 7pm when its illuminated.
ADP 1 is a 40ft container that houses a vast post-apocalyptic landscape populated only by the police and media crews.
The artwork only goes to towns where there's been a riot. Macc had one in Market Place, with potatoes, in 1812. Who knew?
Units from Essex Police, Hertfordshire Police, British Transport Police, Network Rail and, sadly, Undertakers, attend after a fatality at Sawbridgeworth Station.
all the pots, pans and baking trays I used for Christmas dinner drying on top of the everhot cooker.
I also used the wok, not pictured, to do the Brussels Sprouts (with apple, crushed peanut and soy)

As you can see, Valencia is enjoying the Fallas. That is, of course, if you enjoy mess and noise. Lots of noise. But hey, just another week and everything will be calm again...
Powerful artwork from the web. It implies that the man on the ground is unable to continue due to the beating the other man has just put on him! That makes me shudder and offer myself to him.
Something different today, since it is almost Halloween...
Disturbing image portraying the aftermath of a terrible tragedy, and the awakening on "the other side".

Awakening Ghosts created and rendered with Poser 8.
Seems that the recent storms around here have somehow re-awakened my sleepy muse. Inspired by the wave of unsharpness on Flickr lately (check out the master: Arkady Renko), I'm trying my own spin by opening up wide (1.8/f) in contexts usually not suitable for such a short DoF. I really like the feeling of intimacy and isolation this creates. I ended up keeping a good 2/3 of the pix I took on this dreary day yesterday, which is a phenomenal ratio for me.
Weeee! More to come soon...
Today the Hereios of the We're Here! group are having a Party.
The party was great but recovery will take a while.
[The overflowing litter bin was in our local council playground, which has been closed since March.]
