Although the Magister had been replaced by the Alpha Jet as the Belgian Air Force's main training aircraft in the early 1980s a small number were kept on charge with the Advanced Training School for around 25 more years! These were used as liaison aircraft and proficiency trainers at the various Belgian air force bases in the country.
Like many of these base 'hacks', MT31 had previously been part of the Belgian Air Force's 'Red Devils' aerobatic team, and remained in the team colours after it was disbanded in 1977. The badge on the forward fuselage is that of Sint-Truiden (Brustem) Air Base, where the Red Devils were based during their time flying the Magister.
