Pre-construction Phase: ground floor. View from the old entrance to the library - the reception counter and all of the shelving has now gone (happily to other libraries and local charities) and the space is ready for building work to commence.

Electric hoists have now been installed for the Learning Disability Service

New cabling throughout the building - chased in for neatness

Opening in the external wall at the back of the building, leading into the new extension (view from the library)

The start of the colour scheme on the ground floor, on the wall of the children's library.

Children's library ready to receive its furnishings and signage.

Scaffolding built up from the basement on steel girders (see www.flickr.com/photos/devonlibraries/6761112225), which will allow the walls in the reception area to come down (see www.flickr.com/photos/devonlibraries/6761113699)

The colours are up! We really are in the final stages now and it's already hard to remember that this was an excavated area filled with heavy-duty scaffolding only weeks ago. Looking from the main entrance across the library.

Pre-construction Phase: ground floor. Previously the adult learning office and reception, all office accommodation will be consolidated in one space on the top floor. There will be one reception point for any enquiry, whether it is regarding the library, adult learning, or anything else and it will be near the entrance. This means more space for library books.

You can see here that there were some items of broken furniture that needed to be removed during the pre-construction phase, such as the old desk at the back of the room. You can also see holes in the wall from the asbestos survey.

Surveying for new interactive whiteboards in the adult learning/meeting rooms

The original features of this listed building will be retained in the refurbishment, including the oak panel doors and fanlights above.

The walls of the extension are going up around the steel frame in the courtyard. This is the curved wall of the cafe room.
