Yoesden is a beautiful sunny grassland bank and wood in the tranquil Radnage Valley near High Wycombe. It contains some rare and precious chalk grassland, undamaged by ploughs or fertilisers and managed for years to encourage the chalk flowers and associated butterflies that thrive there. In 2014 Yoesden was bought by the Berks Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust who are continuing to manage the chalk bank and wood and encouraging the public to come and appreciate this Chilterns' gem.

In summer the grassland is full of common and spotted orchids, bird's foot trefoil, kidney vetch, Devil's-bit scabious and later on Chiltern gentians. rare butterflies can be found including the Adonis Blue, Chalkhill Blue and Small Blue.

Female adonis blue butterfly at Swelshill Bank near Stroud, Gloucestershire

A male Common Blue and Adonis Blue for comparison. The Male Adonis on the cow pat has very distinct black lines that cross the white outer margin. The Common Blue is split longways with an inner strip of pale grey and an outer of white. The Adonis is considered to be ‘The jewel in the crown’ of chalk grassland with the astonishing dazzling blue of the upper wings. The Adonis has very specific requirements - the larval food plant (Horseshoe Vetch), south south facing slope for warmth and a symbiotic relationship with ants who tend it. The ants enjoy a sugary fluid that exudes from the caterpillar as they drum on a honey gland near the rear end of the caterpillar. The caterpillar (and Chrysalis) can communicate with the ants with a high pitched ‘song.’ In return, the caterpillar gains protection from predators and parasitoids.

No sólo al hombre le gusta mirarse a si mismo

Adonis Blue last night in the South Downs National Park. These little gems live and co exist with ants. The ants care for them when they are caterpillars, and in return they receive a sugary substance. The food plant of the caterpillar is Horseshoe Vetch which can be found on the slopes of The Downs. The males are a spectacular blue when their wings are open to the sun, and the females are a dark chocolate brown with orange spots ringing the hind wing. Both male and female have dark ‘checkering’ on the outer rim which crosses the white outer band. This is one of the distinguishing features which differentiates them from Common Blue butterflies.

Venus and Adonis, 1560

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio)

Widener Collection

The goddess Venus tries to restrain her lover Adonis from going off to the hunt. She clings to him, imploring him not to go, but Adonis looks down at her impassively. His dogs strain at their leashes, echoing his impatience, as detailed in the tragic love story found in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Cupid sleeps in the background, a symbol of Adonis's resistance to Venus's entreaties, since his ineffective arrows hang uselessly in a tree. The story ends tragically; during the hunt the mortal Adonis is fatally gored by a wild boar.

Titian's loose, energetic strokes of paint give the painting a sense of spontaneity and movement. In some areas, the artist even painted with his finger, as seen in Adonis's arm. The composition's dynamism springs from the torsion caused by Venus's awkward pose, which was inspired by an ancient sculptural relief. Titian used rich colors, shimmering highlights, and a lush landscape to create the painting's evocative, poignant mood.

Titian painted the first version of Venus and Adonis as one of a series of eight mythological subjects, which he called poesie, or visual poems, created for King Philip II of Spain. More than thirty painted and engraved versions of this extremely popular theme survive today. Some canvases, such as this one, were painted by Titian himself. Others were produced by members of his workshop, and still others were the work of later copyists.

The story of Venus and Adonis derives from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Venus, infatuated with the handsome young Adonis, knew that his passion for hunting would ultimately cause his death. Here, the powerless goddess clings to her mortal lover in a futile attempt to save his life. Adonis pulls away to pursue the hunt and tragically meets his death. The closeness of the lovers' final embrace serves as an ironic reminder of their impending, and permanent, separation.

It is odd to see Venus depicted as a vulnerable figure and from a rear view. Titian wrote that by posing her from behind, he hoped to provide variety among the many nudes in King Philip's collection. By painting Venus from the back, Titian also allowed viewers to complete her beauty according to their own ideal of perfection.

Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, relates the story of the goddess Venus vainly trying to restrain her lover, the mortal Adonis, from departing for the hunt. The mood of playful sensuality conceals the tragic irony that Adonis is destined to be killed during the hunt by a wild boar. Titian painted two versions of the composition—one in 1554 for Philip II of Spain (now in the Prado, Madrid), and the other shortly before 1570 for the Farnese family (lost). The present picture is a version of the second composition, and since cleaning (1976) can be seen to have been painted in great part by Titian

A male Adonis blue Fontmell Down Wiltshire

25th August 2022

Every now and then I enoy making ooak outfits for dolls. This time it is for the Adonis body.

It's always funny to realize his huge muscles are not as visiually dominant when he's dressed nicely *lol*.

Which one of the three outfits would you choose?

2021 Platinum Journey Convention

Workshop doll

Adonis Hair Salon LE50

After 2 years of useless searches, I recently managed to find and buy this Adonis, a sort of Grail doll for me.

He is almost completely unknown even to Adonis collectors, because this doll was given exclusively to the attendees of the 2021 JHD Fashion doll Convention which takes place every year in China and for this reason they are very limited edition dolls and can be found exclusively on Chinese domestic market.

This shows an Adonis Blue at rest. The underwing patterns of blues are as wonderful as their bright upper wings. Taken at Denbies Hillside at the beginning of June.

Adonis d'été (Adonis aestivalis) - Famille des renoncules

The Arabic name for Anemone coronaria is Shaqa'iq An-Nu'man" translated literally as the wounds, or "pieces", of Nu'man.

One possible source of the name traces back to the Sumerian god of food and vegetation, Tammuz, whose Phoenician epithet was "Nea'man". Tammuz is generally considered to have been drawn into the Greek pantheon as "Adonis".

Adonis died of his wounds while hunting wild boar. The deity is transformed into a flower, stained by the blood of Adonis.
