The ceremonial start to the construction of the new Macalester Athletics and Recreation Center. The project has received considerable criticism by the student body for the allocation of money towards the project despite recently changing the admissions process from "need blind" to "need aware." Basically, while the school recently claimed financial crisis and changed their admissions process to admit more students of affluence, the school embarked on a multimillion dollar athletic complex. Other students complained that the new Athletic Center would not cater to students by not having "unisex" bathrooms, in that students who do not specifically identify with either gender will be forced to choose either the men's or the women's changing room. While I'm not sure about those claims, I personally do find the change in admissions policy troublesome.
This was posted on themacweekly.com, and will likely be in the October 13th edition of the paper.

Getting In -- "Getting In is the roller-coaster story of five very different Los Angeles families united by a single obsession: acceptance at a top college, preferably one that makes their friends and neighbors green with envy. At an elite private school and a nearby public school, families devote themselves to getting their seniors into the perfect school--even if the odds are stacked against them, even if they can't afford the $50,000 annual price tag, even if the effort requires a level of deceit, and even if the object of all this attention wants to go somewhere else." -- from www.amazon.com
An okay book...interesting plot, some decent characters but didn't quite come all the way together.

Gatekeepers -- "In the fall of 1999, New York Times education reporter Jacques Steinberg was given an unprecedented opportunity to observe the admissions process at prestigious Wesleyan University. Over the course of nearly a year, Steinberg accompanied admissions officer Ralph Figueroa on a tour to assess and recruit the most promising students in the country. The Gatekeepers follows a diverse group of prospective students as they compete for places in the nation's most elite colleges." -- from www.amazon.com
Very interesting look behind the scenes of the college admissions process...honest and alternately funny or heart-breaking. A definite recommendation for anyone looking to learn more about the higher education system.

The University of Toronto Faculty of Law (U of T Law, UToronto Law) is the law school of the University of Toronto. The Faculty is widely considered to be the most prestigious law school in Canada. The Faculty's admissions process is the most selective of any law school in Canada and is one of the most selective in North America. The Faculty has consistently been ranked as the top law school in Canada by Maclean's since it began to publish law school rankings. The Faculty offers the JD, LLM, SJD, MSL, and GPLLM degrees in law.
Among its alumni are a Canadian Prime Minister, three Chiefs of Staff to the Prime Minister, two Premiers of Ontario, two Mayors of Toronto, and fourteen Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada, including four of the nine currently-sitting Justices (Rosalie Abella, Russell Brown, Michael J. Moldaver, and Sheilah Martin)—more than any other law school. A number of deans at North America's top ranked law schools—Columbia Law School, Toronto Faculty of Law, Queen's Faculty of Law, and Alberta Faculty of Law—are Toronto Law graduates.
The current Dean of the Faculty of Law (as of January 1, 2015) is Edward Iacobucci, a graduate of Toronto Law and Queen's University, and a Rhodes Scholar. His father, Frank Iacobucci, is a former Dean of the law school and Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
The University of Toronto Faculty of Law has consistently been rated as the top law school in Canada. The Faculty has held the number one spot in Maclean's law school rankings since it began to evaluate law schools in 2007. In 2011, the school was ranked 13th globally by the QS World University Rankings in the subject of law, along with a few select schools from US, UK, and Australia. As of 2018, the Times Higher Education ranked the Faculty the 10th best law school in the world.
As a result of its reputation, the Faculty of Law has the most selective admission criteria in Canada, and is one of the most selective in North America. It has an acceptance rate of 13.5% and a yield rate of 70.1%. The Faculty features a 98% yield rate in the province of Ontario, representing about half of the country of Canada's English-language common-law population. The median undergraduate GPA of students accepted into the J.D. program is 3.85 (86.9%), and the median Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score is 168.
