Anomalies In Admisions and for Social Justice! The JNUAdministration has made it ahabit to violate the lawof the land -in the case of the lawspertaining to the working class,secularism and social justice. They have systematically violated minimum wage laws; tried to deny the rationale for admitting students from madarsa backgrounds to JNU; have subverted proper implementation of UGC fellowships for research scholars;have always avoided taking action against vrolence by communal outfits like .
ABVP; andare nowtrying to subvert the laws relating to fulfilment of PH and OBC reservations. The JNUSU, aware of the JNU Administration's deep-seated biases against social justice, had recognised the need for vigilant monitoring of implementation of the OBC quota last semester itself, and taken up the issue, along with the successful struggles for recognition of madarsa certificates in JNU admissions and proper disbursal of UGC fellowships for research scholars and improvement of library facilities. Then, a particular organisation had derided the JNUSU, claiming that OBCreservationswould get implemented in the natural course, and didnqt'require to be introduced asanagenda of struggle bytheJNUSU. What have been the persisting anomalies in JNU's admissi6ns this year? .
Reluctance of the university to ensure the properimplementation of OBC reservation. From the outset. the JNU Administration has been committed major discrepancies. Initially, the cut-off marks for OBC and General Students was kept as the same.It was only after JNUSU confronted the administrution that .
the viva cut-off for the OBCstudents was relaxed and asecond list was brought out. But when the final list was released, 1n many centres, notasingle OBCstudenthad beenadmitted. Clearly,the elitist administration has used spurious criterion to deny students admission. .
Fulfillingthe mandatory Quota forPHstudents:At the outset,the JNU Administration used many legal subterfuges to deny PH students reservation. When .
JNUSU confronted theadministration, anew list of 31 PH students was released.The number of PH students should be 3% of the university's total strength which amounts to 56 seats.This year,in some centres there have been no PH applicants.Out of46 seats that were offered this year, only 18 have joined. JNUSU strongly argued that the PH quota has to be fulfilled at any cost, and extra PH seats should be created if necessary. .

If such are the anomalies in JNU'sadmissions,why are some organizations repeatedly arguing that there has bee11 aseat-cut? On many occasions, council members belonging to aparticular organization have alleged that with the complicity of JNUSU Office-Bearers there hasbeen aseat-cut. This is '.
not only unsubstantiated but also untrue. JNUSU has stated unequivocally, at every public forum that there has been no seatcut. This is because intake is the capacity of a .
class.It is the real, definite, legal number on whichany law has to be implemented.This point has been madebefore. It cannot be repeated often enough. We hold that the "intake-offer" method and the waiting list system are two methods of fulfilling the "intake". JNUSU made astrong case in theAC meeting of 5" June for ~intake-offer" as abetter system of admission, though the AC voted in favour of the waiting list system. But whatever be the more correct and more appropriate method offulfilling the "intake", the crucial issue was the correct implementation of OBC reservations and seat increase in the new admission policy, for which "intake~ of 2006 forms thelegal basis for all calculations and NOT ~seats offered". .
The intake this year is 1707-well above last year's figures for both intake and joining. Even the "joining" this year so far 1577 is well above the "joining" of last year -1492. JNUSU has been fighting tooth and nail to ensure that the entire increased aintake-is completely fulfilled. .

Like every year, this year too a large number of senior students assisted the freshers during Admissions and accommodated the students in their rooms till the hostel allotment is complete. While in every other University the freshers have to face tremendous ragging from the seniors, it is the progressive character of this University that has ensured that such criminal vices are kept out and the seniors make the juniors feel at home by helping them in every possible manner. On the other hand we would also like to congratulate all the students who have gained admission in our University and wish them all the best for their future. At the same time we would like to appeal to V1em to be a part of the progressive culture of this campus and strengthen them in the future. While the senior students of this campus had to wait for months till they got their own hostel accommodation, this year all the new out-station students will be accommodated by next week. This remarkable change in the availability of the hostel is due to the struggles of the students of this campus under the banner of the SFI-AISF led JNUSU which has ensured that six new hostels are built in our university within a span of six years. Administration has agreed to take back all the workers including the four union leaders whom it had initially dismissed. .
While the agreement of the struggling workers with the Honda Management is a victory for the workers, the Congress Government is yet to take responsibility of the brutal police attack on the workers. Therefore while the workers' demands vis-a-vis the Honda have been met, the Congress Government must be pressurized to act positively regarding the police attack. We demand immediate punishment for those guilty which includes the ACP and DC who actually ordered and coordinated the whole incident. Secondly, the police has framed false cases against the workers which have not been dropped yet. The agitation by the workers was completely legitimate given the high handedness they had to face and hence all charges against them must be immediately dropped. .
The whole Gurgaon incident has highlighted the brutal reality of neo~liberal economic reforms. With the continuing subseNience of the State to international Finance Capital, instead of formulating policies for the people the Government is busy wooing FDI and MNCs and maintaining foreign 'investors' confidence'. In this schema any democratic protest of the workers is perceived as a threat to the so called 'investors' confidence' and therefore must be necessarily crushed. Given this scenario it becomes imperative to fight tooth and nail any attempt to curb the democratic rights of the workers as a part and parcel of the fight against the policies of globalization. In the coming days there is need to ensure ·that the workers are given their right to form trade unions and protest against the policies of the Government. We would like to a eal to the students to stand in solidari with the workers' in their stru le a ainst the olicies of nee-liberalism. .
