Today's story and sketch "by me", started this morning the usual way enjoying a cup of coffee sitting at my drawing table in the Man Cave looking at the overnight intergalactic faxes, when I noticed a Bolo Alert "be on the lookout" addressed most urgent to JB the greatest bounty hunter in the Cosmos, an Rescue Randy the most interesting living tissue crash test dummy in the galaxy, and the number one expert on identifying the many hundreds of varieties of Beaked Beings from the Aves Constellation. This morning's Bolo was for Ace and Slim, two Tropicinian Beaked Beings from the Planet Phatondi who hijacked a intergalactic freighter full of Moon Pies on route to "WHI1", Worm Hole Interchange One" the largest Space Portal and food court in this part of the Cosmos. The Tropicinian hijackers were just spotted in Pasadena California where they have opened a moon pie take away on Foothill boulevard. And sure enough the two Greb tourists that spotted Ace called the hijacker reward hot line and are talking to them, just as you see JB'S chopper and Randy's glider arriving to arrest them, pay the tourists Five thousand dollars and as a bonus Randy will give them the thirty nine Ford coupe to take back to Podicipidi their home Planet, until next time taa ta the Rod Blog.

St. Thomas City Hall National Historic Site of Canada:

Address: 545 Talbot Street, St. Thomas, Ontario

Recognition Statute: Historic Sites and Monuments Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. H-4)

Designation Date: 1984-11-23

Existing plaque: 545 Talbot Street, St. Thomas, Ontario

City halls illustrate the emergence of urban areas in a predominantly rural and agricultural l9th century Canada, and reflect the growth of municipal governments. Built 1898-1899, this city hall is an impressively sited, well-designed example of late Victorian civic building. Incorporated as a city in 1881, St. Thomas sponsored a design competition to choose an appropriate symbol of its future. Neil Darrach's winning proposal features massive blocks of rough-faced stone, elaborate exterior carving, a commanding tower and a richly detailed interior which is largely intact.

Description of Historic Place

St. Thomas City Hall is an elaborate, two-and-a-half storey, stone building with a commanding clock tower. It was built at the end of the 19th century in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The hall is prominently located on the main street of downtown St. Thomas on a generous setback. The formal recognition consists of the building on its legal property.

Heritage Value

St. Thomas City Hall was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1984 because: it illustrates the emergence of urban areas in a predominantly rural and agricultural 19th-century Canada; it reflects the growth of municipal governments; and it is an impressively sited, well-designed example of a late Victorian civic building and one of the few relatively unaltered Richardsonian Romanesque Town Halls surviving in Canada.

St. Thomas City Hall is a representative example of the large, strictly administrative city halls which began to appear across Canada in the 1880s and 1890s. The construction of such a city hall reflected the tremendous growth of the city in the last quarter of the 19th century, a direct result of improved railway service. Designed primarily to house the city’s administrative services, this building’s monumental scale and prominent location reflected both the increased size of municipal government, and the community’s civic pride and ambition. The city’s expectation of continued progress was typical of communities whose prosperity was fuelled by railway facilities.

The exterior form and interior arrangement of St. Thomas City Hall are typical of large, administrative city halls built in medium-size cities during the late 19th century. By the end of the century, urban town halls had evolved from multipurpose buildings, to large-scale, single-function, purpose-built buildings which accommodated only the administrative and legislative functions of municipal government. The construction of large-scale, single-purpose buildings reflected both the growth of urban areas and the expansion of municipal responsibility for local services.

The Richardsonian Romanesque style was used extensively for public buildings in Canada during the late 1880s and 1890s. Designed by local architect Neil Darrach, the St. Thomas City Hall is a restrained representative of the style in its massive scale and quality, its rusticated stonework, prominent clock tower, steep pavilion roofs, and round-arched openings. The elaborate interior, with its vaulted, two-storey council chamber, was in keeping with the style of the exterior.

Character-Defining Elements

Key elements which relate to the heritage value of the St. Thomas City Hall include: its monumental scale; features typical of large, administrative city halls of the late 19th century, including its Richardsonian Romanesque style, prominent clock tower, division into quadrants, and elaborate interior detailing; features associated with its Richardsonian Romanesque style, including the use of heavy-cut sandstone for foundations and entrances, the projecting arched entrances, the arcaded round-arched windows, the steep rooflines, and elaborately carved stone detailing; the division of the building into quadrants, reflected on the exterior in the use of projecting hip-roofed corner pavilions and on the interior by wide, intersecting corridors; the prominent, asymmetrically placed, clock tower, surmounted by a spire; the projecting entrances on the two street elevations, each with round-arched openings, ornate balconies and elaborate, carved detailing; the arcaded groupings of round-headed window openings at the second storey and on the tower, and flat-headed openings at the first storey, joined by pilasters; exterior detailing which emphasizes the vertical and horizontal divisions of the building, including pilasters spanning two storeys, a bold modillion cornice at the roofline, and string courses of sandstone and terra cotta; its elaborate, massively scaled, carved-stone detailing, including corner turrets, pedimented gables, foliated motifs at the two street entrances, and a tower panel showing the name and construction date of the building; the use of high-quality materials, including brick walls, sandstone foundation, stone and terra cotta detailing, and slate roof; surviving remnants of the original interior layout, including the division of each floor into quadrants by wide, intersecting corridors and the room partitioning within those quadrants; surviving remnants of the original council chamber, including its large scale, vaulted ceiling, and third floor visitors gallery; surviving original interior finishes and detailing in the council chamber, corridors and office areas, in some cases extant behind modern finishes, including oak panelling and wainscoting, decorative plaster ceilings, elaborate wood and plaster carving, ornate window and door trim, panelled and glazed doors, baseboards, and wooden railing; art-glass skylight panels, originally located in the council chamber and the entrance to the third floor gallery; detailing in the reading room, including an iron column with fluted capital, supporting a massive chamfered beam; its relationship to its site, including its prominent location on a corner lot; viewscapes of the building from the downtown area, including its prominent clock tower.

Before getting into the title, let me address the image. In addition to the Finchette on the left side of the feeder, we see here a couple of new additions, not necessarily to the yard but definitely to the camera. So, why not introduce them simultaneously in a sitting pose plainly showing the backside as well as a snazzy flight maneuver by, yes, some of you may have guessed, Pine Siskins. As you can see, they are a pretty colored bird with beaks that are more slender than that of a Finch. We used to have a couple of green ones coming around but no such luck this year yet. One more reason we are looking at this flight shot is that I have encountered some criticism regarding my yard management techniques. I want to make it clear that Levitation is not the only thing happening here, although and perhaps because of my dislike for rules (in spite of my German upbringing – nothing is Verboten here) Levitation is practiced a lot.

The reason I am bringing up the “Counting Flowers on the Wall and Inner Peace” in the title is that I simply neglected to mention a couple of things in my previous exposé on Inner Peace. Not only do I do a lot of bird watching (as you may have realized by now), there are other things such as counting ducks that I previously mentioned. Playing solitaire and watching TV have actually taking a back seat to my taking pictures. Smoking cigarettes is still high on the list. Some of you, however, posted such marvelous flower shots with such vivid colors that I now find myself Counting Flowers On The Wall. These, of course, only exist in my mind but are not any less vivid than the real thing.

Counting Flowers On The Wall - Jimmy Buckley, Robert Mizzell, Patrick Feeney

starts at 30 seconds into the video

Although I like the Statler Brothers (they did the original), this is a much snazzier version with way better sound. Addicted to the toe stomping, hand clapping beat.

I was feeling snidey for not making anything for the International Light Painting Award 2015. So I went up in the loft and made this, as not only did Herr Wollert go to the bother of organising the award, he'd cunningly set the deadline for entries as his birthday. So many happy returns to long time crazy euro-light waver Jan Leonardo. Hope the ILPA goes as well as he hoped.

Light Painting SOOC with possibly some crop or minor levels adjustments. Single Exposure.

Taken from the 63rd floor of The Address Hotel. It's great having visitors - it makes me go out and see the city like a tourist again, which is nice!

The area that was to become West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870s and 1880s by a few hundred settlers who called the vicinity "Lake Worth Country." These settlers were a diverse community from different parts of the United States and the world. They included founding families such at the Potters and the Lainharts, who would go on to become leading members of the business community in the fledgling city. The first white settlers in Palm Beach County lived around Lake Worth, then an enclosed freshwater lake, named for Colonel William Jenkins Worth, who had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1842. Most settlers engaged in the growing of tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment the north via Lake Worth and the Indian River. By 1890, the U.S. Census counted over 200 people settled along Lake Worth in the vicinity of what would become West Palm Beach. The area at this time also boasted a hotel, the "Cocoanut House", a church, and a post office. The city was platted by Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants working in the two grand hotels on the neighboring island of Palm Beach, across Lake Worth in 1893, coinciding with the arrival of the Florida East Coast railroad. Flagler paid two area settlers, Captain Porter and Louie Hillhouse, a combined sum of $45,000 for the original town site, stretching from Clear Lake to Lake Worth.

On November 5, 1894, 78 people met at the "Calaboose" (the first jail and police station located at Clematis St. and Poinsettia, now Dixie Hwy.) and passed the motion to incorporate the Town of West Palm Beach in what was then Dade County (now Miami-Dade County). This made West Palm Beach the first incorporated municipality in Dade County and in South Florida. The town council quickly addressed the building codes and the tents and shanties were replaced by brick, brick veneer, and stone buildings. The city grew steadily during the 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th century, most residents were engaged in the tourist industry and related services or winter vegetable market and tropical fruit trade. In 1909, Palm Beach County was formed by the Florida State Legislature and West Palm Beach became the county seat. In 1916, a new neo-classical courthouse was opened, which has been painstakingly restored back to its original condition, and is now used as the local history museum.

The city grew rapidly in the 1920s as part of the Florida land boom. The population of West Palm Beach quadrupled from 1920 to 1927, and all kinds of businesses and public services grew along with it. Many of the city's landmark structures and preserved neighborhoods were constructed during this period. Originally, Flagler intended for his Florida East Coast Railway to have its terminus in West Palm, but after the area experienced a deep freeze, he chose to extend the railroad to Miami instead.

The land boom was already faltering when city was devastated by the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. The Depression years of the 1930s were a quiet time for the area, which saw slight population growth and property values lower than during the 1920s. The city only recovered with the onset of World War II, which saw the construction of Palm Beach Air Force Base, which brought thousands of military personnel to the city. The base was vital to the allied war effort, as it provided an excellent training facility and had unparalleled access to North Africa for a North American city. Also during World War II, German U-Boats sank dozens of merchant ships and oil tankers just off the coast of West Palm Beach. Nearby Palm Beach was under black out conditions to minimize night visibility to German U-boats.

The 1950s saw another boom in population, partly due to the return of many soldiers and airmen who had served in the vicinity during the war. Also, the advent of air conditioning encouraged growth, as year-round living in a tropical climate became more acceptable to northerners. West Palm Beach became the one of the nation's fastest growing metropolitan areas during the 1950s; the city's borders spread west of Military Trail and south to Lake Clarke Shores. However, many of the city's residents still lived within a narrow six-block wide strip from the south to north end. The neighborhoods were strictly segregated between White and African-American populations, a legacy that the city still struggles with today. The primary shopping district remained downtown, centered around Clematis Street.

In the 1960s, Palm Beach County's first enclosed shopping mall, the Palm Beach Mall, and an indoor arena were completed. These projects led to a brief revival for the city, but in the 1970s and 1980s crime continued to be a serious issue and suburban sprawl continued to drain resources and business away from the old downtown area. By the early 1990s there were very high vacancy rates downtown, and serious levels of urban blight.

Since the 1990s, developments such as CityPlace and the preservation and renovation of 1920s architecture in the nightlife hub of Clematis Street have seen a downtown resurgence in the entertainment and shopping district. The city has also placed emphasis on neighborhood development and revitalization, in historic districts such as Northwood, Flamingo Park, and El Cid. Some neighborhoods still struggle with blight and crime, as well as lowered property values caused by the Great Recession, which hit the region particularly hard. Since the recovery, multiple new developments have been completed. The Palm Beach Mall, located at the Interstate 95/Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard interchange became abandoned as the downtown was revitalized - the very mall that initiated the original abandonment of the downtown. The mall was then redeveloped into the Palm Beach Fashion Outlets in February 2014. A station for All Aboard Florida, a high-speed passenger rail service serving Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, is under construction as of July 2015.

The Ascension Convent (Ukrainian: Флорівський монастир, Russian: Флоровский монастырь) in the Kievan neighbourhood of Podil, also known as the Florivsky, originated in the 16th century as the wooden church of Sts. Florus and Laurus. Its buildings occupy the slopes of the Zamkova Hora. Address: vulytsia Frolivska, 8.

The convent greatly expanded at the time of the Great Northern War, when Peter the Great ordered the demolition of the old Ascension Convent on Pechersk Hill with the aim of building an arsenal there. When run by Ivan Mazepa's mother, the older convent had amassed much property. Its riches and nuns were transferred to the Florovsky Convent.

The main church, or katholikon, is a notable example of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. Its first stone was laid in 1722. Ten years later, the three-domed building was dedicated to the feast of the Ascension of Christ. Its Neoclassical bell-tower is of later construction.

The wooden buildings of the monastery were entirely destroyed by fire in 1811. Only the katholikon and a 17th-century refectory were left standing amid the ashes. It was Andrey Melensky, a Neoclassical architect from Kiev, who was in charge of the convent's reconstruction.

The convent's notable residents included Princess Natalia Dolgorukova, one of the first Russian women writers. It was closed in 1929 but reopened after the Germans entered the city in 1941. Several buildings have since been taken over by industrial enterprises.

Disappeared Quipu is a poem in space-a time-based work in dialogue with historical quipus ("knot"in Quechua).

For millennia ancient people's of the Andes created quipus:complex record- keeping devices that served as an essential medium for reading and writing, registering and remembering, through an intricate system of knot making. In a career spanning five decades the artist, poet, and filmmaker Cecelia Vicuña has transformed the rich cultural legacies of the Andean region, reimagining the historical within jet contemporary practice. With feminism as a unifying theme and her ongoing series of work called Precarious (Precario) as a conceptual precursor, she explores the shifting nature of language and memory;the resilience of native people in the face of repression;and her own experiences, living in exile from her native Chile, following the military coup of 1973.

Vicuña has devoted a significant part of her artistic practice studying, interpreting, and reactivating the multidimensional potential of the quipu and it's ritual aspect, banned by the Spanish during their colonization of South America.Drawing from her indigenous heritage she creates installations and transformative ritual performances address issues of homogenization, ecological disasters, and human rights.Disappeared Quipu is part of decades-long explorations that often includes activation by the artist,in which she moves, alone or with others, among the fibers and knotted strands of the work, linking movement, sound and material to enact a physical relationship with the legacy embodied by the quipu. For Vicuña each knot of her "quipus for the future"bears witness to the connection and collective and expressive capacities of a language largely lost to history.

Created specially for this project calls attention to the disappearance of knowledge through the loss of a complex, ancient textile tradition.Vicuña's work links people of the past, present, and future in a collective art of resistance and remembrance celebrating the centuries long cultural legacy of the Andean people.

Red is the hottest of the warm colors. Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. Red is love, red is violence and warfare. Red is Cupid and the Devil.

Culture of Red:

Red is power, hence the red power tie for business people (ha ha, anyone notice President Obama wearing that red tie during his inaugural address?) and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs. More can be found in www.about.com about the color red =)
