Rail Operations Group's 47815 powers through Addlestone in Surrey while working 5O86, a stock move from Ely to Eastleigh conveying 2 class 442 units.

The 24 class 442s were built between 1987 and 1989 for use on the South Western lines out of Waterloo. After 2007 these units were released for use by Gatwick Express. Gatwick Express used the 442s from 2008 until March 2017.

At the time of my picture the future for the class 442 was uncertain since no further use was committed for the fleet. The reason for this move from long term storage at Ely to Arlington's at Eastleigh was not clear.

In March 2017 South Western Railway (SWR) won the franchise to provide train services out of Waterloo. To provide increased capacity, SWR committed to refurbishment and reintroduction of 18 class 442s.

However, since then reintroduction has been slow.

With the effective end of rail franchising in the UK, and the massive drop in ridership caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the future of the class 442s is once again in question.

For these particular units (2405 and 2424), the central motor coaches were scrapped in 2020 but the remainder of the coaches survive.

The popular class 73 'Electro Diesel' locomotives employed by GBRf make a very rare sight these days on full length freight or engineers trains, usually being used for seasonal rail head treatment trains and lying dormant for much of the rest of the year.

Or at least they did until last week!

It would appear that trouble with the class 69's has left GBRf with a traction shortage. The answer has been to employ pairs of ED's on the regular engineers trains between Eastleigh and Hoo Junction, a route perfectly suited to them where aside from the yards they can stay on the 'juice' the whole way utilising their reliable electric capacity.

The word on the street at the moment is that this is the plan until the end of the summer (at which point the locos will presumably be needed for RHTT work, and the 69's might be working reliably).

This is 6Y42 the afternoon trip from Hoo Junction to Eastleigh, captured from above as it approaches Byfleet Junction and the South West Mainline with electric power being provided by 73109 and 73213. The field below is not accessible on foot.

Catch them while you can!

Addlestone sunset with cloud patterns

I'm once again taken to a hostile alien planet when I see this scene. Feelings evoked of a desolate wasteland... humanity searching for life among the stars but finding nothing but lifelessness. ...Perhaps I should write science fiction.

This was a cool place, although the mud following torrential rain was attempting to drag me beneath the surface. I'd love to go again, but it's particularly far from me, and arduous to get into. None of us are getting younger, eh?

(From the Tim archives - although I believe this was only taken 9/10 months ago. I was looking through my older stuff, wondering if I'd been too harsh on myself, not putting many shots on here. Short story; nope, they're just as bad as I thought)

Weybridge is a town by the River Wey in the Elmbridge district of Surrey. It is bounded to the north by the River Thames at the mouth of the Wey, from which it gets its name. It is an outlying suburban town within the Greater London Urban Area, situated 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Woking and 16 miles (25 km) southwest of central London. Real estate prices are well above the national average: as of 2008, six of the ten most expensive streets in South East England (defined as the official government region, which excludes Greater London) were in Weybridge.

Weybridge, based on its parish bounds, forms three wards of the United Kingdom or can be divided into the Thames Street and town centre area, the Queens Road area on top of Monument Hill, most of Brooklands and St George's Hill. Within the post town, rather than Weybridge's other boundaries is Oatlands or Oatlands Village.
