DHSS Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker and Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Director Mike Barbieri joined more than 2,400 participants March 4 for the fourth annual atTacK addiction 5K in Old New Castle. The 5K raises awareness about addiction and helps to reduce the stigma associated with the disease. In 2016, 308 people died from overdoses in Delaware and thousands more sought treatment or were impacted by the disease. The 5K raised more than $150,000 for the grassroots advocacy organization that Don and Jeanne Keister began after the 2012 death of their son, Tyler, from an accidental overdose. Former DHSS Secretary Rita Landgraf was the honorary starter. After the 5K finished, Don Keister announced that atTAcK addiction would be opening its third transition house for people in recovery.

Secretary Landgraf, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Director Mike Barbieri and Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay all spoke at DHSS' two-day, sold-out Substance Usage Disorder Conference in Newark on Dec. 7.
Secretary Landgraf told the more than 250 attendees at Embassy Suites in Newark that DHSS' work to increase capacity in the public treatment system won't happen overnight, but “we view this as all hands on deck.”
Director Barbieri reminded providers in attendance that “we’re not just seeing the symptoms, we’re seeing people.” Often people in addiction are having challenges with their relationships, employment or housing. “We need to see that person as a whole.”
Dr. Rattay said in 2012 that Delaware ranked No. 1 in prescribing high-dose opioid pain relievers, and the state’s ranking for overdose deaths has hovered between No. 8 and No. 11. She said it’s important for addiction screening and the connection to treatment to be more integrated into primary care.
