This was at the "Rainbow Camp", a Hippie camp set-up at the northern edge of the Kumbh Mela festival ground. The camp was organized by a Rasta Yogi man called "Panama Baba", and all non-Hindu travelers were welcome there.

This is Lune (meaning "moon" in French), from an installation called "Lune and Tide".

The giant inflatable moon was hanging between two high metal masts on the playa for a day or so, then it disappeared.

Laurence Symonds wrote:

This is Lune, from our piece Lune and Tide. It was indeed supposed to be filled with helium and anchored from below. Due to the global shortage of helium last summer, we had to improvise at the very last minute and decided to fill it with air and suspend it from above.

Unfortunately our improvised attachments at the top of the balloon weren't quite strong enough and the balloon ripped free on Tuesday afternoon in a particularly windy patch. About 10 people helped wrestle it to the ground before it could blow across the playa, taking out anything in between. Inside the outer printed balloon is another smaller balloon that has 400m of coloured LEDs. We had a control panel on the ground that was designed to have people be able to change the phase of the moon. Unfortunately we didn't have to opportunity to see it fully in action, but we are hoping to repair it and exhibit it at a burning man in the future

SFPD Police cracking-down and arresting many peaceful revelers during the Bay to Breakers footrace festival. It did not appear that the people they arrested were drunk or causing any trouble. They got arrested just because they were partying in the street. Police apparently had orders to crack-down on all festivities on city streets at the 2011 Bay to Breakers race.

SFPD Police did not arrest people that were partying on Park land (Pan handle and Golden Gate Park). I suppose that the rules for arresting people on Park property are a bit different.

This water hose is the only source of clean water in the area, and it is used by all the people living in shanty houses around the Daraganj road bridge.

Young performance artist at the Kumbh Mela 2013 Hindu festival near Allahabad (India)

Boy in a traditional Indian performance consisting in spinning metal weights attached with ropes and forming a circle or wheel shape around a central handle. The balls attached to the ropes are heavy and the performer can get hurt if he makes any mistake.

A large and compact crowd reaches the fire line and runs around circle.

At that moment, the real danger is that many people pushing from outside (to get closer to the fire) are causing those inside to be pressed towards the danger zone of the fire, which is still very hot.

That's why i don't like to be there, near the fire, when the crowd is dense and uncontrolled. So I battled my way out, and returned a bit later.

Wallah with red teeth caused by chewing Areca nut (also called Betel nut or Betel Quids).

The Areca nut is wrapped with Betel leaf and chewed for its exhilarating lift. Betel chewing has been claimed to produce a sense of well-being, euphoria, heightened alertness, sweating, salivation, a hot sensation in the body and increased capacity to work.

Just like alcohol, tobacco, coffee and sakau, Areca nut and Betel leaf are culturally-approved psychoactive drugs.

The Areca nut, by association, is sometimes inaccurately called the "Betel nut" or "Betel Quids".

This is the celebration of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi, Prophet Muhammad's Birthday. Milad un-Nabi, also known as Nabi Day and Mawlid, is a gazetted holiday in India.

It is the occasion of large street parades and other festivities by the Muslim male population (Muslim women are not allowed to participate in those public festivities).

Mount Himalchuli (Nepal)

Himalchuli (Elevation: 7893 m / 25895 ft) is the second highest mountain in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas.

Himalchuli is the 18th highest mountain in the world. Himalchuli is also notable for its large vertical relief over local terrain. For example, it rises 7000m over the Marsyangdi River to the southwest in about 27 km horizontal distance.

This is my friend Bun Bun (Chelsea) and Wojtek, riding a Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival, near Allahabad (India).I ended up using this motorbike for the rest of my trip in India and Nepal.

Ascending the via ferrata Tridentina, Dolomites Mountains (Italian Alps).

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.
