Cow stomach (beef tripe) in a meat market (Laos)

Actually this is from a water buffalo. What you see is the inside of one of the four stomachs of the cow. It has been cleaned and put inside-out. It has a fractal honeycomb structure (reticulum).

Tripe meat is made of the animal stomach and parts of its intestine. Like most organs, it can be cooked and eaten, and in some countries it is a popular dish.

Water buffalo have a black stomach (and black skin), while most cows have a white stomach, so generally raw tripe meat from beef is white.

Some people claim to be repulsed at the sight of objects with small holes, like this photo. The condition is called Trypophobia.

Deer Cave is a passage about 150 m (500 feet) in diameter and about 1 Km (0.6 Miles) long, opened on both end. It was, for many years, considered the largest single cave passage in the world.

Tool wall in the abandoned mercury smelter - New Idria

New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.

If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

Googlenetta - The 8 cameras on the roof of one of the cars used by Google to take photos of every house for Google Maps Street View. See the car here.

This car was un-marked and the hardware is different from other photos published on the web. For its production, Google subcontracts Immersive Media, which uses new VW beettles with a different, cheaper hardware.

There seems to be also wireless and GPS hardware under the cameras.

Beggar with nasty looking skin injury, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

Maybe a flesh-eating bacteria or burn? If you can identify this medical condition, please post a Comment!

Some people say that here are syndicates who maim and injure such people and leave them out in public places to beg for money. On one stretch of road, there were several such 'beggars' interspersed at regular intervals. The injuries were always very similar and at the exact same location, on the left hand and lower left leg. It could be a clever make-up, but i'm not sure. The injuries on the hands and legs look like very bad burns with surrounding necrotic tissue. These victims may not be beggars and if those are real injuries (and not fake makeup), the pain from such injuries must be excruciating. If left untreated these sloughy wounds may well become septic and life threatening. [thanks to "sensibles" for this info]

The huge flame-throwing articulated metal octopus is built out of mostly scrap metal. The mechanical octopus was designed and created by artist Duane Flatmo and the spectacular fire effects and electrical systems were created by Steve Gellman.

The Bunny March is a flash-mob type event where all the bunnies of the city assemble and march to The Man, then to Center Camp, causing devastation and mayhem. They attached giant bunny ears to "The Man".

The Man, by Larry Harvey, Rod Garrett.

In 2009, the Burning Man rises above a 'tangled bank' consisting of irregular wooden triangles. No two elements of this organic composition will be quite the same; together they'll create what's best described as a chaotic truss.

The truss is clearly inspired by the "belgian waffle" installation from 2006.

This is a HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo processed with Tone Mapping using Photomatix. It is based on 3 exposures, with 2 stops between each.

The Mondo Spider

This is a diesel-powered hydraulic mechanical spider. It weights about 1,600 lb.

De-Inventing The Wheel - This ridable mechanical walking machine was designed by a team of artists and engineers as an industrial metal beast destined to rock Burning Man and the world of kinetic sculpture. Inspired by Vancouver Junkyard Wars, this giant hydraulic monster was hewn from steel with passion and precision. Call it robot... call it biomimicry... call it what you will... We call it... The MONDO SPIDER.

It was originally shown at Burning Man 2006: Hope and Fear.
