The graceful, winding arms of the majestic spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194) appear like a grand spiral staircase sweeping through space. They are actually long lanes of stars and gas laced with dust. This sharpest-ever image, taken in January 2005 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, illustrates a spiral galaxy's grand design, from its curving spiral arms, where young stars reside, to its yellowish central core, a home of older stars. The galaxy is nicknamed the Whirlpool because of its swirling structure. The Whirlpool's most striking feature is its two curving arms, a hallmark of so-called grand-design spiral galaxies. Many spiral galaxies possess numerous, loosely shaped arms that make their spiral structure less pronounced. These arms serve an important purpose in spiral galaxies. They are star-formation factories, compressing hydrogen gas and creating clusters of new stars. In the Whirlpool, the assembly line begins with the dark clouds of gas on the inner edge, then moves to bright pink star-forming regions, and ends with the brilliant blue star clusters along the outer edge. Some astronomers believe that the Whirlpool's arms are so prominent because of the effects of a close encounter with NGC 5195, the small, yellowish galaxy at the outermost tip of one of the Whirlpool's arms. At first glance, the compact galaxy appears to be tugging on the arm. Hubble's clear view, however, shows that NGC 5195 is passing behind the Whirlpool. The small galaxy has been gliding past the Whirlpool for hundreds of millions of years. As NGC 5195 drifts by, its gravitational muscle pumps up waves within the Whirlpool's pancake-shaped disk. The waves are like ripples in a pond generated when a rock is thrown in the water. When the waves pass through orbiting gas clouds within the disk, they squeeze the gaseous material along each arm's inner edge. The dark dusty material looks like gathering storm clouds. These dense clouds collapse, creating a wake of star birth, as seen in the bright pink star-forming regions. The largest stars eventually sweep away the dusty cocoons with a torrent of radiation, hurricane-like stellar winds, and shock waves from supernova blasts. Bright blue star clusters emerge from the mayhem, illuminating the Whirlpool's arms like city streetlights. The Whirlpool is one of astronomy's galactic darlings. Located approximately 25 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici (the Hunting Dogs), the Whirlpool's beautiful face-on view and closeness to Earth allow astronomers to study a classic spiral galaxy's structure and star-forming processes.

I actually set foot on the island. There were three weird failed attempts, but my friends wouldn't take no for an answer, even after I lost my wallet and missed my ride up there. So once it was returned to me, I took a bus and actually made it up there. Not completely without other problems, but I managed to get a few dives in, so I'd say the curse has been lifted. :)

Actually I have not decided if I want to rewig her, this wig is not meant for Rio in the first place, but "surprisingly" I kind of like her in this wig!! Maybe at the time being I will let her keep this wig, and if I come across a better wig, I might change it again :)

This was a live specimen that cooperated while I photographed it. I intended to return it to where I found it, but I turned my back for a moment and it disappeared. It's somewhere in the clutter of my studio. Maybe I'll find a beautiful orb web in there someday soon. I hope my wife doesn't find it first. She's has a spider phobia. Glad she loves me.

A peek through the famous Mobius Arch of the Lone Pine Peak during sunrise.
I left the Death Valley NP in the moring after the sunrise shot at the badwater basin, and arrived at the Lone Pine at noon. Then I scouted around the Alabama Hills area in the afternnon, finally found the legendary Mobius Arch. I shot the sunset and night starry sky over there, and got up early in the morning for the sunrise too. Wide angle was the first thing came to my mind because I wanted to include the whole beauty in my shoot, but I also wanted to get my money's worth for the 70-200mm VR I rented, so I put the lens on and walked around for cmposition, and this is what I got: the first light struck on the Lone Pine Peak

actually, i'm not sure what this is. there was a sign for the motel, but google maps shows there used to be a structure next to it that wasn't there when i passed through. this seems to be on the property but is of an entirely different style. doesn't matter - i have an affinity for anonymous motels ...

Actually this is an escape attempt. Probably you do not really recognize it because the gear setup with my 3mm thick neoprene wetsuit and the heavy leather straitjacket just gave me a few millimeters of movement.
Of course my escape attempt is ridiculous the setup is way too secure. My mistress just giggled about my attempt and told me to sit straight again.

The photo is about a light digger. But actually it is about a worker of a brick field who is working till the sunset. And he is digging a hill of mud for collecting mud from that hill. But it seems like he is digging the black frame to give the frame more light.
Actually, this sculpture, park, and greenway section is dedicated to an orphanage and chapel that occupied this site for decades. The orphanage is long gone, but the chapel is still open and available for weddings and other gatherings.
I didn't even have to suggest Daisy pose here, by the way. She just up and did it on her own. Could be from the sheer joy of spontaneity. But more likely she just knew it was inevitable that I would "suggest" it...so she beat me to the punch. 😉💖💖

Actually, it's likely a bank employee ended up the target of all the action, and it wouldn't have been from the police. According to one of these cops, a teller in the Safeway branch of a local bank accidentally tripped the burglar alarm, which generated a pretty heavy police response, a whole lot more than just these three guys. He said that, even though they were certain all was clear, they still had to follow through, just in case, so I had to wait a bit for the all clear before I could continue on with my grocery shopping.

This was actually the last photograph I made as I was backtracking my way out yesterday but decided to share it first based on the other photographs I previously shared. I saw the setting and couldn't resist this capture of the force of Jacks River imploding over the river-right side of the drop to form the Lower Falls. Fortunately, the water was still high, although perhaps just a bit less than the previous Saturday when I was here.
Actually, I don't know if it is a Cleome spinosa or a cleome hassleriana. Maybe someone could help me to tag this flower with the right ID ?

Actually I went to Mount Baleku in Gunung Sari for the view and to get a feeling for the place interestingly described by Alfred Russel Wallace in his The Malay Archipelago. I came too late in the day for the monsoon season, and the mists obscured the views of Mataram from this pretty hill with handsome Hindu Pura. So I looked to the ground.
Here's a Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa aestuans. They're quite hard to photograph because they flit about so erratically. She's drawing nectar from Rattlepod, Crotalaria pallida. Then the rain came down from Rinjani onto the Lesser Hills, and I fled for the car below.
A studio apartment type situation happening inside here.
As a side note: I have designed a couple of so called modular buildings in the past. (namely the Doughnut Shop and Umbrella Store) But the Corner Bakery is actually my first truly "modular" building, because this time I actually paid attention to the stairways so that if you have multiple of this middle floor stacked together, the staircase would run continuously.
Well, actually we aren't!! We're doing Italian - the new Mr. & Mrs. BGDL are joining us for dinner and ONE glass of wine!! So Italian tonight but some lovely rice noodles - maybe, tomorrow night!!

CITX SD40M-2 2799 leads another CITX SD40M-2 and two CITX SD40-2s east through Riverside, IL on a X-MRLCSX. I barely had enough time to get out the door for this guy! I never thought I'd ever see a quartet of 40's on the racetrack again.
Actually under it. From the head pond just upstream of the Seaway Dam at Cornwall, Ontario. Eighty feet of water flows under this ice. At the present time, the ice thickness varies from 12 to 18 inches. Theoretically, you could drive a truck on it. But, due to variation of flow through the dam, water levels can vary several feet in height. Consequently, water is not always under the ice to support it as it would on a conventional body of water. Therefore, it is HAZARDOUS to venture out on ice near a dam, no matter it's thickness.

colored tree lights may have made for a prettier Christmas bokeh shot, but we are sort of partial to having all white lights... oh well. There are actually a ton of really colorful ornaments on the tree however... lost in this type of composition though.
I have actually made The Fullerton Pavilion much bigger than the original image to give it more emphasis. A second shot with a much closer view was planted in manually to serve the purpose.
The Fullerton Pavilion is a first-of-its-kind floating dome structure set on Marina Bay between One Fullerton and Clifford Pier. Catalunya, a trendy contemporary Spanish restaurant and reputably one of the world's top eateries currently taking the space. It has an observation deck on the roof.
