For ten days in October 2021, the brutalist concrete structure known as the International Congress Centre Berlin was open to the public as a unique experience of film, performance and art. We visited the ICC Berlin on the first few days of The Sun Machine is Coming Down, a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Berliner Festspiele.
Since we are big fans of brutalist architecture, visiting the International Congress Centre Berlin was always in our sight. This gorgeous landmark of German architecture is massive beyond comparison, making it one of the largest congress venues in the world.
Maple and beech forest is considered the climax environment for this part of Michigan at 43 degrees north latitude. This cinematic or panoramic view includes painted horizon and lifesize elements without glass barrier to separate visitors from the scene, thereby producing an immersive engagement, making it possible to imagine stepping into the frame and almost hearing the sound of waves hitting the shoreline.
Visitors to the GRPM (Grand Rapids Public Museum) bring a wide range of interests and experiences with them. Some know a lot about the woods in this part of the state and examine the diorama carefully to discover any false elements. Others are creatures of the city streets and parks. Perhaps they have few lakeshore experiences and so this wall provides a glimpse of the open space and wide vistas. Bringing natural settings indoors like this expands the awareness and also the intensity for scrutinizing a scene that is framed and frozen. Perhaps that intensity and curiosity, once sparked, will also travel with the museum-goer when next they go to a park or another outdoor setting.
