'I've come to believe that it’s worth getting to know your fearful mind... it’s never going to leave you. You can’t evict it. It’s more or less hardwired into your psyche and will accompany you onto every stage you set foot on, into every job interview you go to, and every new relationship you enter into. It’s there, and it’s not going to shut up.'

A Crested Caracara perched on a fence post along CR 621 in Highlands County, Florida. A Turkey Vulture was perched on the next fence post.

While I was taking pictures, I began to be aware of a cacophony of noise growing louder and louder across the road. When I looked up, there was a huge herd of seemingly angry cows slowly making their way towards me, all mooing. They finally stopped near their barbed wire fence, adults and calves alike, and just stared at me. They must have considered me an invader in their territory. It was an interesting experience to say the least.

Another image from a terrific landscape photography workshop run by Greg Whitton . Highly recommended.

Between rain showers, CN train U745 makes it's way across Goose Lake with the empty all-rail train for interchange with the LS&I in Eagle Mills.

This is what passes for "high sun" a day after winter solstice in the wilds of the last frontier. It's about 1:30 PM here at Broad Pass and despite the wide expanse of the aptly named gap in the Alaska Range the sun would never get high enough to bask the railroad in light so all our shooting would be in perpetual shadows. In fact only 4 hrs and 36 minutes separated sunrise from sunset here north of the 63rd parallel so this is truly as good as it gets!

Viewed from the parallel Parks Highway we see Alaska Railroad GP38-2 2005 and GP40-2 3005 have Jordan spreader 9 winging powder off the 325 ft long bridge over the Middle Fork of the Chulitna River at MP 305.7 as they plow slowly northbound.

This was a memorable day spent trackside with my best friend only eight days before I'd leave Alaska on a cross continent adventure by road and ferry to begin the next chapter of my railroad career in Boston. What a way to end a decade in the great white north!

If you want to read more about this spectacular day and see more images check out Frank Keller's fabulous article and photography in the January 2020 issue of Railfan and Railroad Magazine. Broad Pass, Alaska

Friday December 22, 2017

I ran across this photo I took of a vacant house on Maine Street here in Brunswick, Maine. It was February and the dirt that gets mixed with the snow and the condition of the structure are very grungy and I added a slight amount of grunge texture to the sky. A year or so later several male students from Bowdoin College just up the road spent time making it livable and it was occupied until last year when because of the pandemic most students returned to their homes. It has since been declared unfit for habitation by the town.
