The Ramsons were fabulous here this year and whilst I didn't quite get the conditions I was hoping for I still took plenty of decent images of this woodland. The aroma was spicily rich in the humid still hours after dawn with the wonderful accompaniment of birdsong, it was quite intoxicating!

"The demeanor of the cactus wren is that of a creature which finds ample interest and enjoyment in life; especially is this true of the immature individuals. The birds of the summer brood remain together for several weeks after leaving the nest, and in little troops of three or four they come fearlessly about houses and perform all manner of clownish antics and acrobatics, all to the accompaniment of a rollicking chatter. I have seen one start from the seat of a wicker chair, run nimbly up the back and over the top, and hang head downward on the other side; often they race back and forth along the ridge of a building with exultant squawks, perhaps clinging to the edge of the roof and twisting their necks to peer underneath. Their curiosity is insatiable; everything must be climbed over, all packages, receptacles, cracks, and crannies looked into and anything inside pulled out if possible. Though the adults lose some of the frivolity, the attitude of good humor seems to remain, and quarrels are few. The only actual battle I recall seeing resulted when one immature bird attempted to bring material to a nest being built by another."

Granite Creek, North Bend, Washington

I hiked last Saturday on the Granite Creek trail. It was a lovely forest trail with dappled sunlight coming through the trees, and lots of bird song and forest sounds. For much of the hike the trail follows the creek, the sounds of which provided a lovely background accompaniment to the hike.

The creek was running high due to snow melt though, and in some areas the roar of the water was so loud it drowned out everything else. There were some nice spots with logs ore boulders to sit by the creek and just get lost in the sound.

The Santa Monica Pier is a large double-jointed pier at the foot of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California. With an iconic entrance, the pier is popular with residents and visitors as a landmark that is over 100 years old.

Santa Monica has had several piers; however, the Santa Monica Pier is two adjoining piers that long had separate owners. The long, narrow Municipal Pier opened September 9, 1909, primarily to carry sewer pipes beyond the breakers, and had no amenities. The short, wide adjoining Pleasure Pier to the south, a.k.a. Newcomb Pier, was built in 1916 by Charles I. D. Looff and his son Arthur, amusement park pioneers. Attractions on the Pleasure Pier eventually included the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome building (which now houses the current carousel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places), the Blue Streak Racer wooden roller coaster (which was purchased from the defunct Wonderland amusement park in San Diego), the Whip, merry-go-rounds, Wurlitzer organs, and a funhouse.

The Carousel was built in 1922 on what was often referred to as a Pleasure Pier and features 44 hand-carved horses. It was rebuilt in 1990 inside the Hippodrome. A calliope provides musical accompaniment.

The La Monica Ballroom opened on July 23, 1924. Designed by T.H. Eslick with a Spanish façade and French Renaissance interior, it was the largest dance hall on the west coast, accommodating 5,000 dancers on its 15,000-square-foot (1,400 m2) hard maple floor. Country music star Spade Cooley began broadcasting his weekly television show from the ballroom in 1948, where the enormously popular program remained until 1954. In the summer of 1955, the Hollywood Autocade opened at the La Monica with one-hundred famous and unusual cars, including Jack Benny’s Maxwell and a Rumpler Drop Car. From 1958 until 1962, the ballroom served as a roller skating rink; first as Skater's Ballroom, and later as the Santa Monica Roller Rink, where the speed skating club won many state and regional championships. The La Monica Ballroom was demolished in 1963.

The Pleasure Pier thrived during the 1920s but faded during the Great Depression. During the 1930s, the pier was mainly used as a ferry landing, while most of the amusement park facilities were closed down and its attractions sold off.[8]

The bridge and entry gate to Santa Monica Pier were built in 1938 by the federal Works Project Administration, and replaced the former grade connection.

The Newcomb Pier was privately owned until it was acquired by the city in 1974.During the 1960s and 1970s various plans were proposed that would entail removal of the pier. The strangest one called for the construction of an artificial island with a 1500-room hotel. It was approved by the City Council, but citizens formed "Save Santa Monica Bay" to preserve the pier.[11] The outstanding order to raze the pier was revoked by the city council in 1973. Within that same year, the Carousel and Hippodrome were memorable sets featured in the film The Sting, although the story was set in Chicago.

In the 1950s, Enid Newcomb suggested to family friend Morris "Pops" Gordon that his two sons, George and Eugene, purchase and operate the Pier’s arcade. It didn’t take much persuasion, for the Gordons instantly took to the Pier and ultimately made Playland Arcade into the Pier’s longest running enterprise offering the day’s contemporary games alongside those of yesterday, providing inexpensive entertainment to a diverse crowd. George’s daughters Marlene and Joanie have kept the business within the family, and the next generation of Gordons is already in training to maintain the family tradition.

In 1983, the Santa Monica Pier experienced a significant loss. On January 27, there were reported swells of 10-feet during this winter storm. When the storm was over, the lower deck of the pier was destroyed. The City of Santa Monica began repairs on March 1, 1983, when another storm rolled in. A crane which was being used to repair the west end was dragged into the water and acted as a battering ram against the pilings. Over one-third of the Pier was completely destroyed.

The City of Santa Monica created a non-profit in response to the damage and called it Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation (SMPRC). SMPRC conducted the daily operations of the Santa Monica Pier, such as managing events, filming, promotions, tenants, and street performers. To date, SMPRC has produced the Santa Monica Pier Paddle Board Race and the Twilight Summer Concert Series. Also, in 2011, SMPRC changed the company name to the Santa Monica Pier Corporation (SMPC).

Annie Lennox has teamed up with London City Voices to perform a massed online version of Henry Purcell’s (1659-1695) heart-wrenchingly beautiful ‘Dido’s Lament’.

In a multitrack video shared online, the Eurythmics legend joins the choir for a contemporary version of the aria, which has lost none of its potency in 2021 – a staggering 332 years after it was written.

Lennox’s voice sounds stunning and the choir, with a harpsichord-like keyboard accompaniment from the soloist herself, adds a sublime texture to the contemporary performance.

THE SILENCE OF THE SIRENS BY FRANZ KAFKA

PROOF that inadequate, even childish measures may serve to rescue one from peril:To protect himself from the Sirens Ulysses stopped his ears with wax and had himself bound to the mast of his ship. Naturally any and every traveler before him could have done the same, except those whom the Sirens allured even from a great distance; but it was known to all the world that such things were of no help whatever. The song of the Sirens could pierce through everything, and the longing of those they seduced would have broken far stronger bonds than chains and masts. But Ulysses did not think of that, although he had probably heard of it. He trusted absolutely to his handful of wax and his fathom of chain, and in innocent elation over his little stratagem sailed out to meet the Sirens.

Now the Sirens have a still more fatal weapon than their song, namely their silence. And though admittedly such a thing has never happened, still it is conceivable that someone might possibly have escaped from their singing; but from their silence certainlynever. Against the feeling of having triumphed over them by one’s own strength, and theconsequent exaltation that bears down everything before it, no earthly powers can resist.

And when Ulysses approached them the potent songstresses actually did not sing, whether because they thought that this enemy could be vanquished only by their silence,or because the look of bliss on the face of Ulysses, who was thinking of nothing but his wax and his chains, made them forget their singing.

But Ulysses, if one may so express it, did not hear their silence; he thought they were singing and that he alone did not hear them. For a fleeting moment he saw their throats rising and falling, their breasts lifting, their eyes filled with tears, their lips half-parted, but believed that these were accompaniments to the airs which died unheard around him. Soon, however, all this faded from his sight as he fixed his gaze on the distance, the Sirens literally vanished before his resolution, and at the very moment when they were nearest to him he knew of them no longer.

1But they — lovelier than ever — stretched their necks and turned, let their awesome hair flutter free in the wind, and freely stretched their claws on the rocks. They no longer had any desire to allure; all that they wanted was to hold as long as they could the radiance that fell from Ulysses’ great eyes.

0If the Sirens had possessed consciousness they would have been annihilated at that moment. But they remained as they had been; all that had happened was that Ulysses had escaped them.

A codicil to the foregoing has also been handed down. Ulysses, it is said, was so full of guile, was such a fox, that not even the goddess of fate could pierce his armor.Perhaps he had really noticed, although here the human understanding is beyond its depths, that the Sirens were silent, and held up to them and to the gods the aforementioned pretense merely as a sort of shield.

----------------------------------------

Kusamono (草物, literally "grass thing")?) is a presentation of herbs or flowers displayed alone.

Kusamono of Amaranthe

Formerly in Japan, it was common to create floral arrangements from wild plants found in the mountains (in pots, unlike ikebana). They could be exhibited in the tokonoma.Today, this type of plant is also called "herb bonsai" or "kusabonsai".

We speak of shitakusa or "accompanying plants" when the kusamono is placed in accompaniment of a bonsai and is therefore not the main object of the exhibition. They are then often an indicator of the season. They can also highlight an aspect of bonsai. A graceful and tall plant will highlight the roughness of a solid trunk and a stocky plant picked up on itself will highlight the elegance of a thin and graceful trunk.

Their clear, mellifluous trills resonate through wetlands from central Canada to the eastern United States, where Swamp Sparrows are fairly common but often hidden among aquatic plants. A vivid rusty cap and wings, combined with subtler browns, grays, buff, and black of the body, simultaneously blend with their marshy habitats and make them gloriously attractive in earth tones."
