The forecast was good, so yesterday I slipped over to Calke, hoping to see a few winter visitors up close.
This lovely little chap was a welcome sight, but played a bit hard to get, rarely venturing into the open, between skulking in the twiggery and dropping on to the feeders. He did pop up in the open late on, when the light was fading and I managed a few tolerable shots. This, despite the lens VR having accidentally and unknowingly switched off; after my lens hood fell off, rolled down the slope in front of the hide and had to be retrieved, to the accompaniment of much swearing...

The Neo-Classical facade of San Rocco in Rome, the church neighbouring Augustus' mausoleum and the Ara Pacis museum.
The church is dedicated to Saint Roch (Rocco in Italian), the patron saint of (among other things) plague victims, and this church was built as an accompaniment to a hospital, the whole complex being founded as an answer to the bubonic plague that struck Rome in 1477.
The church replaced an older church in the area, but not even that church is the one you see today. In 1654 rumours spread that an icon the church had led to miracles, and the money generated from pilgrims to the site meant a new, Baroque church could be built.
But the facade is actually even younger that that, built in 1834 by the architect Giuseppe Valadier. This makeover was probably due to the church having been turned from being a hospital church to a parish church just some ten years earlier. Going for a new, fresh statement look would not be strange then.

Let me say 1959 was a fabulous year; 45 record sleeves adorned bedroom walls, and Mel’s Drive-in and real American Graffiti were alive and well.
“Come Softly to Me” was a favorite tune at the time, and though it didn’t make it to the 1973 “American Graffiti” soundtrack one could hear this tune coming from 100's of compact transistor-radios that were all the rage at the time.
"Come Softly to Me" is a popular song recorded by The Fleetwoods, composed of Gretchen Christopher, Barbara Ellis, and Gary Troxel, who also wrote it.
The original title was "Come Softly” but was changed enroute to its becoming a hit. The owner of Dolphin Records was responsible for the title change. He thought that "Come Softly" might be too obvious and considered risqué, so he had it changed to "Come Softly to Me."
Recording the song at home, the Fleetwoods sang it a cappella with the rhythmic shaking of Troxel's car keys. The tape was then sent to Los Angeles where the sparse instrumental accompaniment was added, including an acoustic guitar.
Released in 1959, the single reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in April.

Shortly before this, I was taking one of my long exposures with the NDx1000 filter and the battery ran out in the middle of the exposure. After changing the battery, to the accompaniment of foul language in bulk, my camera decided to sulk and refuse to perform. Thankfully, the Trossachs Camera Repair Department (Mouldy) was on hand and, after a few wacks with his shinty stick, the camera decided to behave .. thanks, Mouldy!

Néanmoins quand on le traverse, il n'est pas rare d'y voir des femmes intégralement voilées, des scènes sauvages de rodéo urbain et d'y passer devant des points de deal à ciel ouvert, dont un à quelques dizaines de mètres de cette belle 2cv, devant le petit centre commercial. Il est beaucoup plus rare d'y apercevoir la police.

It currently has approximately 24,000 habitants in nearly 8,500 housing units (55% of which are social housing units). despite a difficult economic context and a rate of family living below the still important poverty line, it has never been classified as a "sensitive urban area". Nonetheless, when you cross it, it is not uncommon to see women completely veiled (though it is forbidden by law in France), savage scenes of urban rodeo and to pass there in front of open-air drug dealing points, including one a few tens of meters of this beautiful 2cv, in front of the small shopping center. It is much rarer to see the police there.

I thought of what photo to post to sum up such a strange year, of highs and lows. As waves of virus have washed over us all I thought this photo of a wave building up ready to crash over these wonderful eroded rocks was perfect. There have been times of beauty in between the waves, Draped in sunlight and warmth, only to have plans dashed again. I can't complain, I had a fantastic time with Maura, six weeks in the Italian Alps and Sardinia in summer, then a great two weeks in Wales in November, . It's a. pity our planned trip to the Dolomites had to be cancelled, but I'm sure we'll do something else equally as exciting as soon as France allows me to travel again.

Gravellona Lomellina è un comune lombardo della provincia di Pavia, è un paese speciale, un vero e proprio ‘Paese d’Arte’, come ama definirsi. Negli anni ’90, inizia una vera e propria decorazione del paese, una street art partecipativa, nuova e innovativa. Le Istituzioni decidono di trasformare Gravellona Lomellina in un museo a cielo aperto. La sensazione è proprio questa, passeggiando per le strade sembra quasi di assistere ad un’esposizione, con tanto di accompagnamento audio, disponibile sul cellulare.
Gravellona Lomellina is a Lombard municipality in the province of Pavia, it is a special town, a real 'town of art', as it likes to define itself. In the 90s, a real decoration of the country begins, a participatory, new and innovative street art. The institutions decide to transform Gravellona Lomellina into an open-air museum. This is the sensation, walking through the streets almost seems to attend an exhibition, complete with audio accompaniment, available on your mobile phone.

Cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs or trailing vines in the subgenus Oxycoccus of the genus Vaccinium. In Britain, cranberry may refer to the native species Vaccinium oxycoccos, while in North America, cranberry may refer to Vaccinium macrocarpon.[2] Vaccinium oxycoccos is cultivated in central and northern Europe, while Vaccinium macrocarpon is cultivated throughout the northern United States, Canada and Chile.[3] In some methods of classification, Oxycoccus is regarded as a genus in its own right. Cranberries are low, creeping shrubs or vines up to 2 meters (7 ft) long and 5 to 20 centimeters (2 to 8 in) in height;[5] they have slender, wiry stems that are not thickly woody and have small evergreen leaves. The flowers are dark pink, with very distinct reflexed petals, leaving the style and stamens fully exposed and pointing forward. They are pollinated by bees. The fruit is a berry that is larger than the leaves of the plant; it is initially light green, turning red when ripe. It is edible, but with an acidic taste that usually overwhelms its sweetness.
In 2017, the United States, Canada, and Chile accounted for 98% of the world production of cranberries. Most cranberries are processed into products such as juice, sauce, jam, and sweetened dried cranberries, with the remainder sold fresh to consumers. Cranberry sauce is a traditional accompaniment to turkey at Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners in the United States and Canada, and at Christmas dinner in the United Kingdom.

Der Lichtenhainer Wasserfall in der Nähe von Bad Schandau ist eine der Hauptattraktionen der Sächsischen Schweiz. Der ursprünglich kleine Wasserfall des Lichtenhainer Dorfbachs wurde 1830 zur Steigerung seiner touristischen Attraktivität über einen kurzen Hangkanal etwas erhöht und zum anderen durch ein aufziehbares Stauwehr mit schwallartigem Abfluss ergänzt. Einem Lichtenhainer Bürger wurde das verpachtbare Amt des „Wasserfallziehers“ übertragen. Seither wird jede halbe Stunde am Wehr gezogen. Unter musikalischer Untermalung lässt der „Wasserfallzieher“ das Wasser sturzbachartig den Felsen hinuntergießen.

The Lichtenhain waterfall near Bad Schandau is one of the main attractions of Saxon Switzerland. The originally small waterfall of the Lichtenhain village stream was slightly raised in 1830 to increase its tourist appeal by means of a short sloping canal and on the other hand it was supplemented by a retractable weir with a gushing discharge. A citizen of Lichtenhain was given the leasable office of the "waterfall puller". Since then, the weir is pulled every half hour. With musical accompaniment, the "waterfall puller" lets the water pour down the rock like a torrent.
