This chalk board work table was manufactured by the toymaker Morton E. Converse & Company in Winchendon, Massachusetts some time before 1935.
I'm unable to date the piece by the style of the various motor- powered machines. It is notable that no aircraft are shown. The other vehicles and vessels look like they date from after WWI, which had the effect of accelerating the development of aircraft. This is odd.

Morton E. Converse started his business career in Converseville, New Hampshire, manufacturing acids. In 1873, he purchased a nearby mill to make wooden products.
Apparently he started making toys there, but soon teamed with Orland Mason of Winchendon to form the Mason & Converse Company, which lasted until 1883.
Converse then partnered with his uncle, Alfred C. Converse, and Converse Toy & Woodenware Company was formed. In 1887, the company changed its name to Morton E. Converse & Company. It remained in business until 1934 having been under the stewardship of Atherton D. Converse.
Converse made a great variety of toys, including Noah's Arks, doll furniture, kiddie riding racers, hobby horses, floor whirligigs, drums, wagon blocks, building blocks, pianos, trunks, ten pins, farm houses, and musical roller chimes. Such a large number of toys were made in Winchendon that it became known as Toy Town.[3]
The original Giant Rocking Horse was built in 1912 by Morton Converse. The 12-foot (3.7 m) grey hobby horse was named Clyde, and made from nine pine trees. It was a copy of the company's #12 rocking horse. In 1914, Clyde entered the local parade to celebrate the town's 150th anniversary. Clyde was moved to the railroad station for about 20 years. Then in 1934, he moved to the edge of the Toy Town Tavern for about 30 years. After that, he was put in storage and fell into disrepair. A replica, Clyde II, was sculpted in 1988 by Winchendon native Sherman LaBarge, using the original as a model. He is now on display in a covered pavilion.

About Morton E. Converse:
Morton E. Converse, eldest child of Ebenezer H. Converse (25), was born in Rindge, New Hampshire, September 17, 1837. He was educated in the public schools of his native town and at several academies in the vicinity. He had been in the clothing business for two years at Salmon Falls, New Hampshire, when the civil war opened.
In response to the first call of President Lincoln for three-year volunteers, he enlisted in the Rindge Company, of which his father was captain, and served first in the Burnside expedition to North Carolina.
In July 1862, his regiment joined the army in Virginia and participated in the battle of Bull Run (second), the battles of Chantilly, South Mountain and Antietam. In the spring following it was ordered to the army of General Grant in Mississippi and was in the siege of Vicksburg and in arduous service during the months ensuing in Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Early in 1864, the regiment returned to the Army of Virginia and took part in the battle of Cold Harbor, the memorable assault on Petersburg and other historic engagements.
In the autumn of that year he was mustered out at the end of his term of enlistment. While with the regiment and sharing its duties and fortunes, he was an acting commissary of subsistence.
Although he escaped the rebel bullets he suffered severely from exposure and hardships and for two years was in poor health and not actively employed.
In 1867 he began at Converseville, in Rindge, New Hampshire, the manufacture of Pytoligneous acid, iron liquor, acetic acid and other products of wood acid, and continued it with success for eight years
In 1873 he bought and refitted a mill at Converseville for the manufacture of light woodenware.
Out of this beginning the business of toy manufacture, with which Mr. Converse had been connected for many years, originated. He removed to Winchendon and entered partnership with Orlando Mason, a prominent citizen and successful manufacturer of that town, and under the firm name of Mason & Converse the manufacture of toys and light woodenware was continued. In 1883 the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Converse continued the business in partnership with his uncle, Hon. Alfred C. Converse, ex-mayor of Chelsea, Massachusetts, under the firm name of Converse Toy and Woodenware Company.

'They purchased the Monadnock mill, a commodious and substantial building, forty by one hundred feet, three stories high, with steam power.
From year to year the business increased steadily and the capacity of the works has been correspondingly increased.
In 1887 the firm became Morton E. Converse & Company, the partner's, remaining the same. A new mill was erected forty by one hundred feet, four stories high, for the manufacture of reed and rattan chairs.
This business was later removed to the New Hampshire state prison, where Mr. Converse conducted it with Wilbur F. Whitney and the building was used for the addition of toys.
Another new mill of the same dimensions was built in 1891. Several others have been added to the plant since then.
One of the mills was destroyed by fire, June 30, 1896, together with a large amount of lumber in the yard, but new buildings were erected at once. The factories have exceptional railroad accommodations.
They have been kept up to date in every sense, being heated by steam, lighted by electricity generated in the power house of the plant, equipped with automatic sprinklers and the modern devices for protection against fire, including the thermostat fire alarm system.
Mr. Converse manufactures wooden toys in the infinite variety children's and dolls' furniture and various novelties.
Special Departments are devoted to popular toys in constant demand, such as drums and dolls' trunks.
Constant attention to new notions in the toy business is essential to success.
Mr. Converse has a special aptitude for anticipating the wants of Young American, devising himself and securing from others the toys that attract not only the children of the United States but of the whole world, and he has built up the largest business of the kind in the united States and demonstrated the superiority of American toys in competition with the whole world.
Many of the products are protect under the patent laws.
At the World's Fair in Chicago the Converse Company received the highest awards for exhibiting the finest toys in the world. In other competitions of this kind, as well as in the direct competition for the trade of the world, the Converse toys have won the prizes.
The business now employees nearly three- hundred hands, and produces annually a vast amount of goods. To the ability and resourcefulness of Morton E. Converse more than to any other single cause may be attributed the success of this business. He has been the manager and chief owner during the years of its greatest growth and development.
Mr. Converse has been active in the public affairs of Winchendon, taking upon himself his full share of the duties of citizenship. He is a Republican in politics, a member of the Republican Club of Massachusetts, and of the Home Market club of Boston.
In 1890-91 he was a representative to the general court and was chairman of the house committee on banks and banking and member of the committee on water supply. In 1903 he was elected to state senate and re-elected in1905.
He was chairman of the committees on public service, water supply, parish and religious societies, and in 1905 was a member of the committees on drainage, military affairs and street railways.
He was one of the organizers and director of the Winchendon Light and Power Company, also served as its president. He was treasurer of the New England Baby Carriage Company, which is now merged in the Morton E. Converse Company & Son, president of the New England Lock and Hinge Company, was a director of the Granite State Manufacturing Company, but has now sold his interest, director of the Winchendon Board of Trade and president of Village Improvement Association.
He is active in the church and in various social organizations. He is a thirty-second degree Mason, an Odd Fellow, a Member of the local tribe of Red Men, of the local Grand Army Post and of the local camp of Sons of Veterans, called after him Morton E. Converse Camp.
He married, August 19, 1869, Hattie M. Atherton, daughter of Thomas and Susan (Peacock) Atherton, of Lowell, Massachusetts. She died October 28, 1886, leaving two children. He married (second), September 17, 1889, Bertha E. Porter, daughter of Rev. Samuel Porter, of Chicago. Children of Morton E. and Hattie M. (Atherton) Converse were: Grace Atherton, born November 17, 1873, married Dr. Louis Cross (See Cross family). Atherton Darling, born January 7, 1877.

At SNS, negatively charged hydrogen ions are produced by an ion source. Each ion consists of a proton orbited by two electrons. The ions are injected into a linear accelerator (shown here), which accelerates them to very high energies. The ions are passed through a foil, which strips off each ion's two electrons, converting it to a proton. The protons pass into a ring where they accumulate in bunches. Each bunch of protons is released from the ring as a pulse. The high-energy proton pulses strike a heavy-metal target, which is a container of liquid mercury. Corresponding pulses of neutrons freed by the spallation process are slowed down in a moderator and guided through beam lines to areas containing highly specialized instruments for conducting experiments. Once there, neutrons of different energies are used in a wide variety of experiments.
The linear accelerator, or linac, accelerates the H- beam from 2.5 to 1000 MeV, or 1 GeV. The linac is a superposition of normal conducting and superconducting radio-frequency cavities that accelerate the beam and a magnetic lattice that provides focusing and steering. Three different types of accelerators are used. The first two, the drift-tube linac and the coupled-cavity linac, are made of copper, operate at room temperature, and accelerate the beam to about 200 MeV. The remainder of the acceleration is accomplished by superconducting niobium cavities. These cavities are cooled with liquid helium to an operating temperature of 2 K. Diagnostic elements provide information about the beam current, shape, and timing, as well as other information necessary to ensure that the beam is suitable for injection into the accumulator ring and to allow the high-power beam to be controlled safely.

We made our annual trip to London in November. We travel down by coach from Slaithwaite and stay at The Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch. It’s actually a weekend ladies shopping trip that is run as a fundraiser for Slaithwaite Brass Band – I’m the only bloke that goes every year! We decided ( the two of us) to stay down in London until Thursday this time as we wanted to see weekday London and be able to explore a bit further afield on foot. We covered up to 16 miles a day, which is tough going on crowded pavements with hundreds of busy roads to cross. I photographed anything that looked interesting but I bent a contact in the CF card slot, fortunately I had quite a few SD cards with me and the 5D has dual slots so I was able to carry on using it. It’s currently at Lehmann’s getting fixed.
With it being close to Christmas the decorations are up everywhere so there was plenty of colour at night. In Hyde Park the Winter Wonderland was in full swing, we’ve never bothered going to it before but I went twice at night this time. It is massive this year, I couldn’t get over how big it is and the quality of some of the attractions. The cost and effort involved must be phenomenal – it was quite expensive though. It was very difficult to photograph, with extremes of light (LED’s) and darkness and fast moving rides into the bargain. I think I have some decent usable stuff but at the time of writing I am only part way through the editing process so I don’t know for sure.
We set off at around 8.15 am every day and stayed out for at least 12 hours. The weather was poor for a day and a half with drizzle and very dull grey conditions, fortunately we had some pleasant weather (and light) along the way as well. Being based at the end of Oxford Street – Europe’s busiest shopping street – meant that I did quite a bit of night shooting on there. Although I carried a tripod everywhere I only used it once and that was during the day! Because there is always a moving element in almost every shot it seemed pointless using a tripod. I would have got some shots free of movement – or I could have gone for ultra-long exposures to eliminate people and traffic but it would have been problematic I felt. In the end I wound the ISO up and hand held – fingers crossed.
We walked out to Camden Market and Locks but it had been raining and we were a bit early as many were only just setting up for the day. We tried to follow routes that we hadn’t used before and visit new places. We paid a fortune to get in St Pauls but you can’t use cameras. This something that I fail to see the point of, ban flash if you want but if you are going to encourage tourism why ban cameras when there is nothing in particular happening in there. It’s a rule that seems to be applied arbitrarily in cities around the world. Fortunately we could take photos from the outside of the dome, which was real reason for visiting, and we had some great light. Expensive compared with a couple of euros in some famous cathedrals. I’ve wanted to walk to Canary Wharf for a number of years and this year we did. We crisscrossed the Thames a few times and tried to follow the Thames path at other times. We covered around ten miles but it was an interesting day. It was also very quiet for the last four or five miles. We got there about 12.00 and managed to get a sandwich in a café in the shopping centre at the foot of the high rise office blocks before tens of thousands of office workers descended from above. It was mayhem, packed, with snaking queues for anywhere that sold food. We crossed to the other side of The Isle of Dogs and looked across to the O2 Arena and the cable car, unfortunately there isn’t a way across for pedestrians and it was around 3.00 pm. With darkness falling at around 4.30 we decide it was too late to bother. We made our way back to the Thames Clipper pier to check the sailing times. They sail every twenty minutes so we had a couple of glasses of wine and a rest before catching the Clipper. Sailing on the Thames was a first in 15 trips to London. The Clipper is fast and smooth, the lights had come on in the city and there was a fantastic moon rise. It was nigh on impossible to get good shots at the speed we were traveling though and there were times that I wished I could be suspended motionless above the boat. Again, hopefully I will have some usable shots.
We felt that the shopping streets were a little quieter, following the Paris massacre it was to be expected, I might be wrong as we were out and about at later times than previous trips. I think I have heard that footfall is down though. It was good to get into some of the quieter backstreets and conversely to be stuck in the city business district – The Square Mile- at home time. A mass exodus of people running and speed walking to bus stops and the rail and tube stations. It was difficult to move against or across the flow of bodies rushing home.
Whilst the Northern(manufacturing) economy is collapsing, London is a giant development site, it must be the tower crane capital of Europe at the moment. It was difficult to take a shot of any landmark free of cranes, it was easier to make the cranes a feature of the photo. It’s easy to see where the wealth is concentrated – not that there was ever any doubt about it. The morons with too much money are still driving their Lambo’s and Ferraris etc. like clowns in streets that are packed with cars , cyclists and pedestrians, accelerating viciously and noisily for 50 yards. They are just sad attention seekers. From Battersea to Canary Wharf we walked the Thames Embankment, the difference between high and low tide on the river is massive, but the water was the colour of mud – brown! Not very attractive in colour. We caught a Virgin Train from Kings Cross for £14.00 each – a bargain!. We had quite a bit of time to kill around midday at Kings Cross so I checked with security that I was OK to wander around taking photos, without fear of getting jumped by armed security, and set off to photograph the station and St Pancras International Station across the road. I haven’t even looked at the results as I type this but I’ll find out if they are any good shortly. Talking of security, following Paris, there was certainly plenty of private security at most attractions, I don’t know if it was terrorism related though, I can’t say I noticed an increased police presence on the streets. It took us three hours and five minutes from Kings Cross to being back home, not bad for a journey of 200 miles. I can’t imagine that spending countless billions on HS2 or HS3 is going to make a meaningful (cost effective) difference to our journey. Improving what we have, a little faster, would be good. There are some bumpy bits along the route for a mainline and Wakefield to Huddersfield is the equivalent of a cart track – and takes over 30 minutes – it’s only a stone’s throw. Time to get back to editing.
