手拭い tenugui = cotton towel / banner

Japanese towns that participate in the kite battles and float parades of the annual hamamatsu kite festival create tenugui, cotton banners with unique designs and colors. these serve as logos to help spectators identify the various competing groups. The San Francisco public library displayed 100 of these banners. 11 years ago.

Seen in Waterloo, London, earlier this year.

This is the result of my playing with how to frame this high-contrast photo of how these three things came together. I like the "minimalist-dramatic result, but I had trouble finding a caption. I settled on Triple Play.*

* A triple play is a very rare play in the game of baseball. There have been only 724 in the entire history of USA Major League Baseball (1876-present). If you don't know what a triple play is, and want to know more, see:

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.

HAPPY TUESDAY'S TEXTURES !

It caught my eye: a lone autumn leaf that had left its tree late; after the snow. It gives some needed context to an expanse of aging snow, with its texture revealed by slanted afternoon sun.

Location: Snow field near the village of Gersbach, Baden-Württemberg DE.

It really is a pity that such shiny and photogenic objects must be so noisy and smelly

Fantasy Flying Series

A fantasy diptych features a wonderful early Spring sky and the budding out of early Spring branches, a sight that is eagerly anticipated after a long winter and that brings with it an awakening and grateful refreshment.

Abstract detail from the gates of Old Saint Martin's Church in the Cornmarket, Worcester. The modern art metal gates represent St Martin slicing his cloak in two to give clothing to a beggar - here I have 'cut' in on the detail for a textured abstract.

HAPPY TUESDAY'S TEXTURES !!

Here, I am having some fun with abstract reality.

These patches of lichen and the underlying, colorful moulds are "rising"

on a cement retaining wall, located next to a neighbor's driveway.

In order to bring out the beauty and drama in this peculiar subject,

I greatly increased saturation and contrast.

Location: Front driveway of a private home, Riehen BS Switzerland.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota USA.

On these plains, this prairie, Native Americans once hunted bison and deer with complete freedom. Today, a small population of bison still roam these plains, feeding on lush grass watered by summer thunderstorms, undisturbed and free, but confined by the fences of the park.
