Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona USA

I know there are a great many photos on Flickr of Antelope Canyon. It is truly spectacular, of this there is no doubt. However the crowds are such that it's hard to get a clear shot of anything unless you pay extra money for the 'Photographer's Tour' which, while certainly worth it, is still interrupted by hordes with iPhones pressing to get by you while you, with your tripod, are desperately trying to get a half decent long exposure.

The Canyon is owned and operated by the Navajo tribe.

This was one of two A1 sized 'Fraisthorpe Beach' photos I showed in an exhibition called 'Strange Familiars' that took place in October 2021. It was held at Espacio Gallery, East London. The exhibition was originally due to take place in April 2020.

Here is an explanation behind the exhibition:

'The people we meet, the places we visit, or even a simple object we have or use can seem very familiar. But occasionally, when we are in that familiar place, or with those familiar faces or holding that familiar object we look again, and discover something new, something strange.

Twenty-two London photographers present ‘Strange Familiars’, a vibrant exhibition that perhaps catches a contemporary mood as much as it explores nuance in the everyday. With work that stretches from nature photography, street photography and portraiture to architectural studies and abstract, this compelling show presents a very diverse range of contemporary photography.'

A big thank you to krystina stimakovits for having the vision for this exhibition before lockdown hit us all.

Thanks too to Jenny Nash for curating the eventual exhibition.

This exhibition was by the Central London group of London Independent Photography ('LIP'). Here is a link to the LIP website: www.londonphotography.org.uk/upcoming/feed-3/

I took these two 'In Camera' double exposure photographs of subsided wartime concrete pillboxes on the beach at Fraisthorpe, Yorkshire, where coastal erosion remains an issue.

Photo taken December 2019. Here's the link to the first photo of this set: flic.kr/p/2i4NNxa.

This is a winter telephoto (FF equivalent 292mm) taken in 4:3 format and then cropped to make a 16:9 "panorama."

It features the Swiss Alps (last layer before the sky).

To me, the result is somewhere between a landscape photo and an example of abstract reality photography.

I took the original photo back in 2007. I stumbled across it today (14 December 2020) during a browse of old winter photos, and decided to crop it and post it.

Sometimes the lens through which we look at things can create a fractured sense of reality. The sky above us can appear shattered, but by shifting our gaze slightly we can see it better for what it really is. Still, fractures do happen, too. Sometimes it's not a matter of either/or, but both/and, yin & yang. "We see through a glass darkly...." (St. Paul). "The cracks--that's how the Light gets through." (Leonard Cohen)

My photos are never intentionally political. In a sense, this was a sort of experiment in that I know politics is unavoidable for many people viewing this flag ... it is just another carefully made photo ....
