Challenge #16

Make a picture entirely for yourself.

— Jim Naughten

Jim adds...

“Imagine its going to hang in a gallery and you are the only person who will ever see it. No peers, friends, family, or anyone else will see it. I often use this process to visualise a project or story, free of any outside influence or judgement. You may just find your voice.”

I have no idea how these shots got taken and what they are of. But I like them.

A closeup of this crumbling graffiti wall looked to me like a rainbow oil spill splashed in form upon cinderblock.

This is the 20th layer of my exercise painting.

Exercise painting was something that just happened to fall into my life as I started going to school to learn more about health sciences. I wanted to bring my love for exercise and art together into one practice. As a result, I now have a canvas of dry wall. On some layers I use a roller painter to work out my arms. I also scribble class notes on it in thick marker because I find that it helps me to retain information. The layers that you see in particular: The tree and the moon I created using both my right and left hands in order to use the muscles on both sides, and the next layer I added the leaves through a series of yoga poses. I became stuck thinking about what to do next, but then I decided that I wanted to throw my love for digital art in the mix and so I composed myself into the painting.

If you would like to hear me try to talk about my exercise painting, I had a video here: vimeo.com/141956985
