L'Heure Verte is upon us! 3600 bottles of locally-produced absinthe will be made available for sale tomorrow, ending a prohibition that has lasted nearly a century.

(Absinthe was made legal for sale in the U.S. earlier this year, but locally-made stuff has been hard to come by in California.)

Full louche: Once ice-water has begun to dilute the absinthe (through the spoon & carrying dissolved bits of sugarcube with it), the anise breaks down and a beautiful reaction takes place. The crystalline woody-green color becomes an opalescent cataract green. The dance of particles in the glass is the payoff for the time spent...this is a slow process. A fragile inscense of anise & fennell rises from the glass. Something is alive in there, I swear it... Blogged.

Over the weekend Great Lakes Distillery held a poster competition for their award winning absinthe. Of course to judge properly it was decided that we also had to imbibe some :)

I hope our red boy Absinthe will have green eyes just like his parents. It looks very exotic for me - red color and green eyes.

Much of the romance of absinthe was in the preparation ritual with the absinthe glass, slotted spoon, sugar cubes and cold water.

Her comission is almost done! Almost...
