Their glorious season is now.

Trees are an important part of the terrestrial ecosystem, providing essential habitats including many kinds of forest for communities of organisms.

Epiphytic plants such as ferns, some mosses, liverworts, orchids and some species of parasitic plants (e.g., mistletoe) hang from branches; these along with arboreal lichens, algae, and fungi provide micro-habitats for themselves and for other organisms, including animals.

Leaves, flowers and fruits are seasonally available.

On the ground underneath trees there is shade, and often there is undergrowth, leaf litter, and decaying wood that provide other habitat.

Trees stabilise the soil, prevent rapid run-off of rain water, help prevent desertification, have a role in climate control and help in the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem balance.

Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old.

Trees have been in existence for 370 million years.

It is estimated that there are some three trillion mature trees in the world.

MAGIC CELLARIUM,

The Vaulted Cellarium is where stores of food were kept, because here they would stay cool, dry, and out of the sunlight.

I suddenly saw palm trees, lol?

In fact, it was one very large pantry.

If you walk beneath its arches at dusk on a summer evening, you’re more than likely to encounter one of the eight species of bat that have been reported around the Abbey.

The later it is, the better the light gets, another prime example here.

Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.

Near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years, until 1539, when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

A MAGICAL place… so tranquil and peaceful

So, lets put our minds to it... yes flowers talk to me and I hear them with my eyes, LOL

How this series came about: in the shop, the flower stall, in one of the buckets, on the bottom, one pack of Tulips, no water.... all bent!

I immediately saw the potential.

Many images passed my minds eye.

I had to keep them cool, so they kept their shape, super enjoyed photographing them, making the images come true!

Nicely SYNCHRONIZED!!!

Once in water....

They straightened, the fun was over, now I have the photo's as sweet memories, to share with you.

I love photographing horses, not the easiest to do, there are standards, but with the help of the breeders it usually becomes a very pleasant and exciting experience.

Here was a fortuitous moment, as a photographer, yes you have to focus on the main subject and there is MUCH to think about and concentrate on, but as a creative you stay aware of what is going on around you, and these 'off' images often become my favourite shots...

Such tenderness, closeness, emotion, just HAD to be captured.

These nobel animals are roaming free on a beautiful day.

I love objects that are 'different', like this red vase.

The flowers are normally arranged in the opening at the top, but here I used it for the shape and colour and as a prop for the blooming cyclamen, set up with the dramatic light that I like so much.

The flowers were obstreperous, but it turned out fine, love the one peeping from the right.

Fresh out of the husk…

Papery texture.

Poppy is the common name given to the plant genus known by the scientific name of Papaver.

The field poppy (Papaver rhoeas), like this here, has always been a symbol of death and rebirth, and no other flower combines exquisite delicacy of tissue with such a vibrant blaze of colour.

Poppies are flowering plants with delicate, papery petals in a variety of shapes and vibrant hues.

There are more than 70 distinct species in the poppy (papaver) genus, including opium poppies (Papaver somniferum), corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and Oriental poppies (Papaver orientale).

Poppies are an excellent addition to mixed beds, borders and cut arrangements.

I Think It's Going To Rain Today…

He is one of my main favourite artists, because of his great sensitivity.

SCOTLAND…

It is early October and we are in Scotland, so the weather is ‘Scottish’… which means, some sun, racing clouds, fast showers, lots of light play on the hills and oooh interesting light.

As we are high up, we are closer to the sky, so; often the top of the hills are covered in eerie wisps of white cloud.

Like a lover’s caress.

The weather doesn’t bother us, we take it as it comes, everything has its charms and moods.

When in The Highlands, you just have to see it with mist and rain.

We stand on the shore of Loch Lubnaig, standing silent, stunned by such beauty, which changes by the second! I capture the rain.

This is again how it came out of my camera!

I’m a ‘purist’, lol

Delphinium... or more popularly known as Larkspur, in my favourite 'hot' blue colour, straight from the garden!

All parts of the plant contain an alkaloid delphinine and are very poisonous!

Blue flowers, in my personal experience, are some of the (if not THE...) most difficult to light correctly, so that you keep the original tonality...

Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they have flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges and all the colours of the rainbow.

CRATAEGUS ROSEA!

On our way to the Coast, Summertime, the roads East were lined with blossoming hedges of Hawthorn, mostly white the branches were heavily cascading, it was like driving through a garden, very beautiful and peaceful, we mostly leave later, behind all the traffic, because we are after the 'later' light anyway... when most are going home...

We passed a few pink hawthorns and I could not resist bringing home this branch.

It suffered a bit, but once home I submerged it in water for a while, cut widely open the woody branch, put it in water and photographed it the next morning.

Now, the changed colour, just as beautiful in a totally different way.

It is almost Mid Autumn, the trees are still dressed, the shops are gearing towards the sparkly season...

Some Autumn colours still around, fiery till the end!

The name "chrysanthemum" is derived from the Greek words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower)

Chrysanthemums, sometimes called mums or chrysanths, are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae.

They are native to Asia and northeastern Europe.

Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China.

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb as far back as the 15th century BC.

The flower was brought to the Western World in the 17th century.

There are about 40 valid species and countless horticultural varieties and cultivars.

For many years, chrysanthemum signifies praise and admiration.

A chrysanthemum is considered as a noble flower of the Chinese noble class.

The Japanese hold this flower as the symbol of the sun.

Closely related to bok choi, this leafy green Chinese vegetable belongs to the cabbage family (though tastes nothing like cabbage!).

It has long green, slightly ribbed leaf stalks and soft oval green leaves.

The leaves and stems are best suited to brief stir-frying or steaming to retain their mild flavour.

Occasionally you may be able to find baby pak choi which can be cooked whole.

Great for a diet, because few calories!

I use it in stir-fries and soups.

Another EYE-TEASER?

This is the second last in this series and will hopefully reveal the answer.

It was in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Brussels, a room was built by an artist, Lucas Samaras’ Mirrored Room, the ceiling and floor plus two walls were mirrored, two walls had painted stripes and light-strips.

Not easy to photograph.

ART+VERTIGO= ARTIGO, tee hee, you really had the feeling of vertigo in this special piece of Art.

Hot pink Ranunculus.

Persian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus) is a perennial plant that can grow to be a foot and a half tall.

The petals are often highly lustrous, some species are popular ornamental flowers in horticulture, with many cultivars selected for large and brightly coloured flowers.

What got me 'in' to 'flower-photography', was that I wanted to know more about lighting.

That was 30 years ago, flowers seemed the perfect subject matter, because of their different colours, shapes, textures, great variety and 'characters', I'd had many a garden, grown my own, so, I started out with an advantage, I knew about flowers...

I found a niche in the market, for almost 20 years now people have been 'raving' about them, asking me how I 'do' it?

There is NO magic formula, each flower is unique and treated as such!

I do NOT consider myself a 'flower-photographer' but a a photographer who knows how to use lighting well and with a great love for flowers...

PLACES, where I find my PEACE...

The verticals, they stand straight and tall, the supports for Summer's roof of leaves.

I am used to solitude, silence, peace.

A change is nice, yet it can become too much.

Sometimes I crave silence.

So we are off to Damme, now I must tell you, when I revisit my beloved Flanders, I have not really been unless I have not spent time here, our favourite spot.

The Canals of West-Flanders, Oostkerke/Damme/Brugge...

A few miles from Brugge, you have the small town of Damme.

In the Middle-Ages, this used to be the harbour of Brugge, one of the wealthiest cities in the North.

Due to silt the North Sea is now about 25 miles out, but Damme retained it's reputation for good food and beer, wonderful old buildings full of the history of revolutionary Flanders.

Centuries later Napoleon saw the importance of the area and ordered a system of canals to be built.

I stood in the middle of one of the bridges, in Oostkerke, across those magnificent tree-lined canals.

A UNIQUE landscape that just goes on and on and on... A photographer's paradise!

Classified to the UNESCO Patrimonium.

There was a mini pointed cabbage (Hispi cabbage) in the shop…

A creative photographer came along and spotted it, picked it up, turned it around and around, looking at all the beautiful angles… could not resist, saw the potential… and bought it.

Eagerly took it home, into a dark studio, positioned it, switched on the lights, set it it all up beautifully and made a portrait of the mini-cabbage… RESULT! LOLOLOL

Then, cut into a delicious vegetable soup. THE END.

Meconopsis grandis, known as the blue poppy, is the national flower of Bhutan.

Blue poppies do not produce opium.

In the late spring of 1922, a British Himalayan expedition, led by legendary mountaineer George Leigh Mallory, discovered the plant on their failed attempt to reach the summit of the then-unconquered Mount Everest.

The flowers were introduced to much excitement at the Royal Horticultural Society's spring show of 1926. However, since they are difficult to grow, the species has become fabled over the decades.

Himalayan varieties have the reputation for being notoriously difficult to grow from seed, but when germinating new plants, using fresh seeds will help.

It comes as a surprise to many that poppies are available in shades of blue.

First a longish bud.

Then out of the husk. See how tightly the petals are still packed.

I’ll have to hurry, because once they start unfolding, there is NO stopping them!

In Whitley Bay, on the third floor of a building, we could hear it bark each time we looked up, LOL

WE had been to the sad funeral of a young colleague of Paul, killed in Afghanistan.

For our soul we needed a walk on the promenade, in silence, tears from the wind(?) and the expanse of the North-sea and sky.

Cascading gold, the petals of a Gerbera.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family. It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink.

The center of the flower is sometimes black.

It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip).

A member of the Asteraceae family of dicotyledonous plants, its garden relatives thus include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia.

There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants.

Dahlias are perennial plants with tuberous roots, though they are grown as annuals in some regions with cold winters.

Spaniards reported finding the plants growing in Mexico in 1525, but the earliest known description is by Francisco Hernández, physician to Philip II, who was ordered to visit Mexico in 1570 to study the "natural products of that country".

The tubers were grown as a food crop by the Aztecs, but this use largely died out after the Spanish Conquest.

They were used as a source of food by the indigenous peoples, and were both gathered in the wild and cultivated.

The Aztecs used them to treat epilepsy, and employed the long hollow stem of the (Dahlia imperialis) for water pipes.
