Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they have flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges and all the colours of the rainbow.

From bud to bloom.

From my garden, a few days of lesser weather, the Roses suffered, I watched till I could no more and then brought them in... and here it is, one of them, the showy Just Joey, for our pleasure.

Few roses are as perfumed as 'Just Joey' a classic variety, with a fabulous scent and stunning depth of colour.

The salmon, coppery-orange flowers have pronounced red veining, with the whole bloom fading to a satisfying copper-buff with age.

It is also very disease-proof and undemanding.

Hybrid Tea Rose and has a fruity fragrance (to me it smells like ripe raspberries mmmmmm) which wafts from large ruffled salmon blooms, once opened.

This superstar rose is from England. Just Joey roses were inducted into the Hall of Fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 1994.

The flowers are well-formed with large, high-centred buds, supported by long, straight and upright stems.

The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.

Gently sprinkled with pollen...

This one is a vibrant and hot pink with a white frill.

The waiting buds only just peeping out.

Any which way you see them, they are gorgeous and interesting!

Summer was slowly leaving us in a flurry of colour.

Named for the shape of their leaves, like blades, gladioli – from the Latin word “gladius,” meaning sword – have a history that spans from Africa to the Mediterranean.

Symbolising strength and moral integrity, gladioli also represent infatuation, with a bouquet conveying to a recipient that they pierce the giver’s heart with passion. How romantic!

LA PLUME DE MA TANTE... by magda indigo

Short for "la plume de ma tante est sur la table" (French for "My aunt's pen is on the table"), an expression used to mean stilted, textbook-derived speaking of a foreign language.

The expression comes from the really odd sentences used in some textbooks to demonstrate grammar (rather than the sort of thing you are actually likely to say in the spoken daily language).

There was also a song out of a famous revue and play: La plume de ma tante est sur le bureau de mon oncle...

A typical vaned feather features a main shaft, called the rachis.

Fused to the rachis are a series of branches, or barbs; the barbs themselves are also branched and form the barbules.

These barbules have minute hooks called barbicels for cross-attachment.

Another image ALL ABOUT LIGHT and colour and texture, I'm trying for as much depth/relief as possible in photography.

In many gardens this is what you now see, white, fragrant Lilacs, the panicles standing proud, overtaking the green leaves... sadly, often due to the weather, not for long!

They very quickly go brown because of the rain, these here are still perfect!

Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae), is native to Europe and Asia.

The usual flower colour is a shade of purple (often a light purple or lilac), but white and pale pink are also found. The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance.

Gomphocarpus fruticosus: Asclepias fruticosa is the old botanical name, Narrowleaf cotton bush, Swan bush, Swan milkweed the popular ones.

Here: the seedbox/fruit

Inflated green and later light brown, papery pod or follicle; short bristly hair cover the outer surface; dark seeds have silvery cotton wool-like attachments that facilitate wind distribution.

Asclepias fruticosa is a species of milkweed native to South Africa.

It is also common in New Zealand where it is the main host of the monarch butterfly.

The plant's tissues contain sufficient cardenolides that consumption of significant quantities of the plant's leaves, stems, or fruit may lead to death in livestock and humans.

Brought this from Sardinia to photograph in my studio.

… what happened next?

THE SEEDS: due to the heat given off by the lights in the studio, the pods started to open and the pod opened and released the seeds.

Hundreds of seeds fluffing from that one pod. In a matter of minutes all of the seeds floated out of the pod.

Once the process of release started, it could not be stopped.

I loved shooting this small miracle of nature in my studio.

Bought a mixed bouquet, saw just the tips of the yellow Irises, to my amazement, the center turned out blue, not seen that before, thus photo-session with my new elegant models.

All the curvaceous beauty ...

I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen!

In Flowers'-language: Iris means faith; hope; wisdom and valour

In Fine Arts: the lenses also have an iris diaphragm which can be opened and closed to control the amount of light reaching the film.

Iris can mean:

* The sphincter around the pupil of the eye, the iris is the most visible part of the eye, when photographed with a flash, the iris only reacts to protect the retina, and not fast enough to avoid the red eye effect.

* The equivalent device in a camera,

* The messenger of the gods in Greek mythology

* A variety of flower,

* A female first name.

Here, Autumn is in full swing!

The weather matches the season of moodiness, you see it in people, scurrying, hurrying, collar high, head retracted, hands in pockets, no, no sun today.

In the studio, the lights are my suns, lol.

Making these maple leaves bright and beautiful.

Next, a grand celebration of Autumn.

My neighbour grows this lovely vine... it is now absolutely delightful.

They offered me some and I brought the leaves into the studio and made a few compositions.

First thing you see of course are the colours in this grapevine leaf... but then the eye gets drawn in to complexity of the texture, all the veins, the small bumps, little scars due to weather or ‘visitors’?

OAK SMOKED GARLIC... EXPLORED! by magda indigo

Egyptian slaves were given a daily ration of garlic, as it was believed to ward off illness and to increase strength and endurance.

As indicated in ancient Egyptian records, the pyramid builders were given beer, flatbread, raw garlic and onions as their meagre food ration.

Upon threatening to abandon the pyramids leaving them unfinished, they were given more garlic.

It cost the Pharaoh today's equivalent of 2 million dollars to keep the Cheops pyramid builders supplied with garlic.

Although it may seem a new concept, garlic was in fact introduced to Britain by the Romans and has been a cook’s staple for millennia.

The bulbous vegetable was praised in ancient Sanskrit writings, the Egyptians buried it with their dead and by 1500BC it had spread across the world – it even turned up in the medieval court of Richard II.

But by the 19th century, Mrs Beeton was describing it as ‘offensive’ and for most of the 20th century you barely caught a whiff of it in the domestic kitchen.

Cheap flights and package holidays changed our perceptions, and Britain soon rediscovered garlic’s 'pungent' charms, using it in everything from curries to casseroles, stir-fries and soups.

Coupled with a renewed thirst for traceable, local produce, British-grown garlic is set to become a great household favourite.

Capucine is the name of this flower in French.

In English, the flower is called Nasturtium indicum.

Tropaeolum majus is a species of flowering plant in the family Tropaeolaceae, originating in the Andes from Bolivia north to Colombia.

An easily-grown annual with disc-shaped leaves and brilliant orange or red flowers, it is of cultivated, probably hybrid origin.

Nasturtiums are used as companion plants for biological pest control, repelling some pests, acting as a trap crop for others and attracting predatory insects.

Both the flowers and leaves of the Nasturtium plant are edible and have a peppery taste, similar to that of watercress.

A few years ago, on a Saturday evening we drove to Harrogate, a pleasant spa town to the south-east of the Yorkshire Dales, famous for its tea shops (like Betty’s), flower shows, Turkish baths, antique shops and gardens.

A very 'oldy worldy' place with a particular atmosphere.

Once a year in this huge green, the rows of trees lining the paths explode in splendour, the cherry trees.

They criss-cross the lovely lush grassy fields.

The first time we came across them... we were too late.

The next year... some trees had been chopped because of disease, leaving huge gaps...

The next year we forgot...

The next year it was a dreadful Spring with late frost, the blossoms hardly came out, a merciless storm threw them to the ground...

The next year we kept hearing on the news that although the money had been raised and the young trees planted to restore this visual feast, some vandals came and cracked the saplings...

Last year we forgot again…

This year, WE MADE IT!!!

The sky had been a milky soft box the whole day, but I sensed a glimmer of 'more', as everyone went home, the 'sun' came out gently for a while.

It was wonderful, the tender full blossoms ever so gently swaying in the warm evening light, walking in wonderland, so beautiful… so fleeting.

The next day it was windy, across from our house; the neighbours have a Cherry tree… most of the petals now a pink carpet on the ground… grab it while it's there!

Just a few of the images I came home with, a flavour of the opulence with which I was surrounded, what a feast for all the senses.

Tall and colourful hollyhocks give height and beauty to English gardens.

They are often found around doorways, where they add to the vertical dimension of the planting, forming a vital part of that thatched cottage look.

Also referred to as Althea Rosea.

Hollyhocks are very drought resistant, and do well in full sun locations that might be too hot or dry for other plants.

The stems of hollyhocks can be used as firewood, and the roots have been used medicinally.

You can take seeds and grow from singles, never from doubles!

Is the case for many plants!

Lilium longiflorum.

And I have a demanding presence!

Also a most pleasant fragrance.

This plant is native to Japan and the Ryukyu Islands.

It is a stem rooting lily, growing up to 1 m high and bears a number of trumpet shaped, white, very fragrant, and outward facing flowers.

I love the subtle tones, all the varied tones, that give the flower/petals/stems their texture, depth and form, their delectable shapes accentuated, extracted and emphasised without the colour.

Zantedeschia, usually erroneously called Calla or Arum lilies (only when big and white), they are not a true lily.

It is named after Italian botanist Francesco Zantedeschi.

THIS is the last place we took my lovely son, Michel when he was here.

It was quiet, peaceful and calm, only the wind caressing your ears, strange little birds chirping and sheep blaring.

Michel seemed to come to rest from his all too busy life.

The three of us absorbed the epic surroundings, no words were needed.

I would like to say to you all, do not ever leave a loved one on a bad note, you NEVER know if you will meet again.

Due to circumstances, like a virus and lockdowns... this was the last time we hugged, when he left, and like usual, we told each other: I love you, take care.

He died on the 7th of July 2020.

Malham Moor and the surrounding area is wonderfully rich in natural history.

This wealth stems from the climate and the geology – the limestone laid down beneath ancient seas and capped by sandstone deposits, raised up, fractured by fault lines and scoured by glaciers to form the watershed of our modern rivers.

We left the South of France and had an overnight stop in Beaune.

It had been a long and hot day, after our meal we went for a stroll in the town centre, at last in some cooler air.

The two here looks like chaud and froid! LOL

Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or department in eastern France.

It is located between Paris and Geneva.

Beaune is one of the key wine centers in France, and the center of Burgundy wine production and business.

The annual wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune is the primary wine auction in France.

The hospice structure, in the town center, being one of the best preserved renaissance buildings in Europe.)

The town is surrounded by some of the world's most famous wine villages, while the facilities and cellars of many producers, large and small, are situated in the historic center of Beaune itself, as they have been since Roman times.

With a rich historical and architectural heritage, Beaune is considered the "Capital of Burgundy wines".

It is an ancient and historic town on a plain by the hills of the Côte d'Or, with features remaining from the pre-Roman and Roman eras, through the medieval and renaissance periods.

MAGIC CELLARIUM,

The Vaulted Cellarium is where stores of food were kept, because here they would stay cool, dry, and out of the sunlight.

I suddenly saw palm trees, lol?

In fact, it was one very large pantry.

If you walk beneath its arches at dusk on a summer evening, you’re more than likely to encounter one of the eight species of bat that have been reported around the Abbey.

The later it is, the better the light gets, another prime example here.

Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.

Near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years, until 1539, when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

A MAGICAL place… so tranquil and peaceful

Yes, my burning passion for flowers, the capturing of their beauty in a thousand different ways, a wonderful challenge... everyday!

Me, I just 'listen' to them, I open the wrapping, they fall open on the table and tell me.

The closer I looked the more they invited me in, to listen , yet keeping the center of the flower still very secret... They emerged from the dark.

I immediately saw the potential.

Many images passed my minds eye.

I had to keep them cool, so they kept their shape, super enjoyed photographing them, making the images come true!

Nicely SYNCHRONIZED!!!

Once in water....

They straightened, the fun was over, now I have the photo's as sweet memories, to share with you.

Chrysanthemum, tightly packed, a true Autumn flower, built against rain, wind and cold?

The name "chrysanthemum" is derived from the Greek words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower)

Chrysanthemums, sometimes called mums or chrysanths, are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae.

They are native to Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China.

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb as far back as the 15th century BC.

The flower was brought to the Western World in the 17th century.There are about 40 valid species and countless horticultural varieties and cultivars.

A Hagoromo Intermediate Incurve Chrysanthemum.

Etymological Meaning of the Chrysanthemum Flower

It’s surprisingly easy to remember the scientific name for this flower because it’s Chrysanthemum, the same as the common name for gardening varieties.

However, the exhibition varieties used by florists and arrangers were divided into their own genus known as Dendranthema.

The mums in your yard are likely part of the Chrysanthemum group, while the bouquet sent by the florist contains all or mostly Dendranthema flowers.

Aside from small Latin differences, all Chrysanthemums share a common Greek source for their name.

The words Chrysos, meaning gold, and Anthemon, meaning flower, were combined to reflect the beauty and value of this blossom.

This name carries over the Chinese and Japanese translations, which literally mean gold flower or blossom as well.

From the same plant, it is fascinating to see the differences.

The petals are coloured on the inside!

Brought these, as they looked ready, only when I looked through the viewer did I spot the bumble bee, it stayed there the whole time, I thought is was dead, but no, it was just gorging on the pollen.

After the shoot, I put it outside and it flew off in freedom!

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae.

Prickles occur all over the plant – on surfaces such as those of the stem and flat parts of leaves.

These are an adaptation that protects the plant against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant.

Interesting bit: Carduus is the Latin term for a thistle (hence cardoon, and chardon in French), and Cardonnacum is the Latin word for a place with thistles.

This is believed to be the origin of name of the Burgundy village of Chardonnay, Saône-et-Loire, which in turn is thought to be the home of the famous Chardonnay grape variety.

We all know what the ‘bad and sad’ news is EVERY day, we are bombarded with it?

All too aware of it.

Why would I want to repeat-share this?

I prefer to sprinkle some beauty, goodness, kindness and joy, we all need it.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family.

It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink.

The center of the flower is sometimes black.

There is a beautiful park close to us, with lots of majestic and old trees set in gently undulating grass fields.

The light was with us on this balmy October-day.

I just stood for some time, smile around the lips and eyes, forgetting the world around me... the children's laughter filtered to the 'drowned' distance.

I woke up to eternalise it.
