Tropical rainforests are among the most biodiverse habitats in the world.

Trees provide shade and shelter, timber for construction, fuel for cooking and heating, and fruit for food as well as having many other uses.

In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture.

Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures, and they play a role in many of the world's mythologies.

An old craft, very zen, tried it!

Not something you see often these days?

Louet wheels treadle lightly, are low maintenance and nearly adjustment free and can be modified with accessories for the expert spinner.

Louet wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns.

Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns.

This type of wheel is powered by the spinner's foot rather than their hand or a motor.

The spinner sits and pumps a foot treadle that turns the drive wheel via a crankshaft and a connecting rod.

This leaves both hands free for drafting the fibres, which is necessary in the short draw spinning technique, which is often used on this type of wheel.

You cannot visit Brugge, and return without a photo with or of a SWAN.

Why Swans in Brugge?

THE LEGEND:

At the end of the 15th century, the oppressed people of Bruges rose in revolt against the unpopular Emperor Maximilian of Austria.

They captured Maximilian and imprisoned him in the Craenenburg House on the Market Square, together with his equally unpopular adviser, Pieter Lanckhals.

Lanckhals was condemned to death and Maximilian was forced to watch the execution.

The Emperor eventually escaped and later took his revenge: he decreed that ‘until the end of time’ the city should be required at its own expense to keep swans on all its lakes and canals.

And why swans? Because swans have long necks – and the Flemish for ‘long neck’ is ‘lange hals’ – or ‘lanckhals’!

And so a city legend was born…

THE FACT? More likely…

The first swans in Bruges go back to the Middle Ages.

In the early 15th century, Bruges bought the right to keep swans from the Count of Flanders.

At that time swans were a symbol of distinction.

The killing or stealing swans was forbidden.

Swans were first mentioned in the city accounts in 1403.

At that time the swans tended to stay on the vests around the city because the canals were the water highways of the city and too busy for the swans.

The mute swan is commonly associated with romance because of its stark white beauty, graceful swimming and the fact that it mates for life.

Yet there are many things most people don’t know about this swan, including that it is not native to North America and it can be one of the most aggressive waterfowl.

I chose the graphic composition, because I wanted something different.

TOOLS TO MAKE PHOTOGRAPHS!

Going through some old negs and prints, I came across this 'Polaroid' we made for fun, of some of the photographic gear we had then in 1993.

Only 2 things survived, the 2 Hasselblads.

For 'sentimental reasons' I kept the Canon AE1 (which I'd had since 1979, it was the world's first camera with an embedded microcomputer and was designated as the official 35mm camera for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, U.S.A.)

I also still have my favourite of all times: my Nikon F4, later joined by a second one, but that one now drains the batteries!

Light-meters, lenses, flashes with heavy flash-packs...

All analog... there were already 'rumblings' amongst our peers about something called digital(?), but, no, nothing was EVER going to replace the quality of film...

Oh dear, I resisted a very long time (about another 14 years), well, until I 'had' to agree that digital was 'as' good?

I still feel that film has something digital doesn't, but the technology has made things easier especially during pro shoots with lights, no more Polaroids to see if you have got the lights, composition, position, etc. right, no more darkroom, loading your precious film on the bobbins (in the dark, by feel), mixing the chemicals, the temperatures, the nail-biting wait for the results. (probably gobbledygook to a lot of you? haha)

Having said that, where with analog you had the work before and in the darkroom... now it is very much after... in the digital darkroom.

In 2007 I succumbed and started with a NikonD200 and never looked back.

The basics and rules of photography have NOT changed, you still HAVE to know them and learn the skill!

The beauty that surrounds us in everything for those willing to see.

My flower photography has overtaken my world somewhat.

And much as I love it, my ‘other’ photography is as important to me.

So, here goes.

FLAMBOROUGH, probably our favourite 'haunt', the weather and colours typical 'North-Sea'...

We both grew up on the Coast (different Continents!!!), with the sea, its pleasures and its dangers.

This wonderful place is on the North-Yorkshire Heritage coast.

You have Flamborough Head with the lighthouse.

The North Landing = Smuggler's Cove, you can see where it gets its name, when the tide is out, you can get into the caves, and then, The South Landing where the Life guards have their house and boat. All within a mile from each other, three different places entirely, in the center you'll find a small village.

Its beauty, through the seasons ALWAYS special, its people, birds and superb views, changing with the weather, influencing the -all so important- light!

The cliffs are limestone...

An amazing afternoon, plenty of music and a lot of laughter.

Like so many photographers (and I'm one of them) hide behind their camera, they prefer hiding behind their instruments.

As soon as they came in, the private concert started, I think by the time we finished, they'd gone through their whole repertoire! This is the guitar man, a lovely man, he plays the jazz, classical and Spanish guitar.

Duo Magit, MA-ndolin & GIT-aar, the Dutch word for guitar.

I got to know them through an Art-salon I organised, we became friends, had them in our studio and reunited 10 years later, all still going strong!

They are musicians through and through, it is in their soul, their bones, they become alive with sound.

This is again my free and creative work, thank you for viewing, lol.

CURVY CAPUCINES...

Capucine is the name of this flower in French.

In English, the flower is called Nasturtium indicum.

Tropaeolum majus is a species of flowering plant in the family Tropaeolaceae, originating in the Andes from Bolivia north to Colombia.

An easily-grown annual with disc-shaped leaves and brilliant orange or red flowers, it is of cultivated, probably hybrid origin.

Nasturtiums are used as companion plants for biological pest control, repelling some pests, acting as a trap crop for others and attracting predatory insects.

Both the flowers and leaves of the Nasturtium plant are edible and have a peppery taste, similar to that of watercress.

Ostend, Flanders, Belgium, in the middle of the Market Square.

It was the last Sunday of our holiday in Flanders last Summer, we walked along the quay, onto the promenade and down the street to the Market.

People were already gathering on the terraces to listen to the evening concert from the Kiosk.

It will be the last Summer-concert, it is the City Brass Band of Ostend. We sit and wait.

What joy, so beautiful and fun. Before it is over, we photograph them from all sides.

I grew up with this, family members, long gone stood there listening too! Mmmm

The octagonal music kiosk has been around since the late 19th century.

Until the year 1894, music was played on the Wapenplein around the big lantern.

In 1893 , a number of residents of the square filed a petition to get a permanent music building.

After consultation with the city council, contractor Léon Pannier was commissioned to build a fixed kiosk for the sum of 12,100 francs, designed by the city architect.

On Sunday, June 2, 1895, the music company Euterpe officially opened the new kiosk, which was not yet fully completed.

During both World Wars, much destruction was caused in the city center by the violence of war.

The town hall, library and archive did not withstand the rain of bombs.

After the Second World War, several attempts were made to demolish the kiosk, but in the 1970s the building was to be protected.

Since 1981, the kiosk on Wapenplein has been a recognised and protected monument by royal decree.

The kiosk designed by city architect Theobald Van Hille is built in an eclectic style.

It rests on an octagonal bluestone pedestal.

The slender, double-row cast iron columns and wrought iron balustrades above them come from a kiosk in the second Kursaal in the middle of the concert hall to improve the acoustics.

The dome is in turn made of zinc-coated wood and equipped with a lightning rod.

The four winches on the dome each bear the name of a composer: Grétry (Belgium), Wagner (Germany), Rossini (Italy) and Gounod (France).

The kiosk is a typical example of late 19th century - early Belle Epoque architectural style.

The seniority of officers and non-commissioned officers is signified by the amount of lace worn on collars and cuffs; the more lace the more senior the rank.

The Pikemen & Musketeers are dressed and equipped as members of the Company would have been in the 1640s and are tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and escorting him when he is on official business.

Company of Pikemen & Musketeers to parade no more than 63 members at any one time, that being the size of a company in the 17th century.

Only veteran members of the HAC who have had proven efficient service in the HAC’s Territorial Army regiment are eligible to join the Company of Pikemen & Musketeers.

All join in the lowest rank, regardless of any previous military rank held.

Members must be fit enough to competently complete the march of the Lord Mayor’s Show.

Military medals and insignia are permitted to be worn.

Members are unpaid but give freely of their own time for drill practice and rehearsals as well as the parades and guards themselves.

All make a significant contribution towards the cost of their own uniform and are expected to clean and look after their armour, muskets and other kit to maintain the highest standards of turnout for the many prestigious occasions they parade for.

SPANISH FISHING NETS... by magda indigo

Fishing nets have been used widely in the past, including by stone age societies.

The oldest known fishing net is the net of Antrea, found with other fishing equipment in the Karelian town of Antrea.

The net was made from willow, and dates back to 8300 BC.

The remnants of another fishing net dates back to the late Mesolithic, and were found together with sinkers at the bottom of a former sea.

American Native Indians on the Columbia River wove seine nets from spruce root fibres or wild grass, again using stones as weights.

For floats they used sticks made of cedar which moved in a way which frightened the fish and helped keep them together.

With the help of large canoes, pre-European Maori deployed seine nets which could be over one thousand metres long.

The nets were woven from green flax, with stone weights and light wood or gourd floats, and could require hundreds of men to haul.

Fishing nets are well documented in antiquity.

They appear in Egyptian tomb paintings from 3000 BC.

In ancient Greek literature, Ovid makes many references to fishing nets, including the use of cork floats and lead weights.

Pictorial evidence of Roman fishing comes from mosaics which show nets.

In a parody of fishing, a type of gladiator called retiarius was armed with a trident and a cast net.

In Norse mythology the sea giantess Rán uses a fishing net to trap lost sailors.

References to fishing nets can also be found in the New Testament.

Jesus Christ was reputedly a master in the use of fishing nets.

Fishing nets have not evolved greatly, and many contemporary fishing nets would be recognised for what they are in Neolithic times.

I would have that on my wall... LOL

Aconitum, commonly known as aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mouse-bane, women's bane, devil's helmet, queen of poisons, or blue rocket.

It is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae.

These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly native to the mountainous parts of the Northern Hemisphere, growing in the moisture-retentive but well-draining soils of mountain meadows.

Most species are extremely poisonous and must be dealt with carefully.

The tall, erect stem is crowned by racemes of large blue, purple, white, yellow, or pink zygomorphic flowers with numerous stamens.

They are distinguishable by having one of the five petaloid sepals (the posterior one), called the galea, in the form of a cylindrical helmet, hence the English name monkshood, and in Flemish: monnikskap.

THE START of our adventures in FRANCE.

We have our basis in Flanders, the ‘FLAT COUNTRY’ when we go to visit the Continent…

Mostly we stay for 8/10 days.

It is a mad rush from family to friends… doing our lovely round, it is NEVER enough, so that Summer we decided on 18 days, and the promise that we would have not just a ‘visit’ but also a proper holiday.

France was the chosen destination, we were going to visit Burgundy, however, the weather was very hot, so we changed our plans and headed for Normandy and Brittany, the ‘cooler’ Coast.

In half an hour we drove across the border into the North of France, French Flanders, on our way to Normandy.

Already the landscape started to change, hills beginning to roll…

It was HAY time!

Everywhere the fields had been ‘shaved’, the bales waiting to be collected, scattered over the golden fields… Different countries make different shapes of bale.

I spotted this, probably owned by a more ‘meticulous’ farmer?

No, Not an actor, my friend is a painter who loves his headgear.

Don't ask me where he got this hat from, but needless to say there was a lot of laughter going on.

As you see, he was very straight faced, telling me all the things that would happen in my future, none of which came true, except that I had found the love of my life, Paul and that there were other men in my life... indeed, my sons, and two fantastic male friends, one of which he was one...

You didn't have to be a clairvoyant, nor need a crystal ball to see that.

All the different hats also meant shifting the light settings, each time a new challenge, a new exercise.

We had the pregnant mum in the studio first, then dad came with this little angelic tearaway...

To distract this little dolly, I got out this colourful Parrot, a prop we've had for years, you say something and the parrot repeats it 3 times, imitating whatever sound you made, or whatever you said... you can make it bark, miauw, moo...

We've had a lot of fun and laughter out of the silly thing...

However the girl was fascinated, it kept her busy for a while, while the parents were getting ready for the portrait session.

The studio was set before they came, she was totally spellbound by the parrot...so, bang, I got her!

I had to sphotograph her as she came, as not long ago she discovered the joy of running... she loved the studio, tripped over cables, got entangled in the bg, refused to sit, hihi, let alone pose?

She had a lot of fun, at the end of the session... I WAS KNACKERED,

But, I had the shots!

I found these on the ground, in the ‘wild’.

Berries are so autumnal, only very few are edible now, except for the birds and other animals.

A jelly made from them is popular for dressing game.

According to Robert James in 1747, the fruit is excellent for treating the scurvy, and the exudates from the bark is good for the diseases of the spleen.

When dried and powdered the berries have been turned into a type of bread, and in an infusion make an acidulous drink.

A gargle made from the berries is good for a sore throat and inflamed tonsils.

However, it is bitter – very bitter.

Sorbus is a genus of about 100–200 species of trees and shrubs in the rose family Rosaceae. Species of Sorbus are commonly known as white-beam, rowan, service tree and mountain-ash.

This upright, tree is the most compact of the Rowan trees making it ideal for small gardens. Fluffy, white corymbs of flowers appear in April-May that are popular with bees.

Mid/dark green pinnate foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn which complements the reddish orange berries that hang in heavy clusters and are a treat for the birds.

Popular folklore maintains that a heavy crop of fruit means a hard or difficult winter.

Similarly, in Finland and Sweden, the number of fruit on the trees was used as a predictor of the snow cover during winter.

However, as fruit production for a given summer is related to weather conditions the previous summer, with warm, dry summers increasing the amount of stored sugars available for subsequent flower and fruit production, it has no predictive relationship to the weather of the next winter.

Twine is a light string or strong thread composed of two or more smaller strands or yarns twisted, and then twisted together.

Could I live without music? I wonder, I was surrounded by music from when I was born.

Mainly classical, but of course in my teens and when my sons grew up it was full on POP.

In my student days though, it was a lot of France chanson, the moody, emotional, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens etc...

And Always there: the classical.

I have now returned once more to the classics more and more, some of the new pop songs, why not, I love traditional Japanese, it relaxes me

People seem to have different attitudes towards religion?

New Gods?

They used to attend mass on a Sunday, in the old days very much in the catholic and protestant churches of Europe, with best clothes on, the entire family.

Now they found a new thing to do, the entire family are now to be found in these modern Cathedrals: these shopping centers popping up all over, often the men look rather gruff till they see an Apple store" LOL

The children hate it and are pulling and wailing, till they get an ice cream or something sweet.

I mean shouldn't they be playing in a park or on a beach?Nobody looks very happy!

Except young couples love, they find happiness EVERYWHERE!

Ah well, it is progression...
