Yes, all our herbs come from the wild or from gardens...

Also it is trendy now to decorate your food with edible flowers, violets, chrysanthemums, tulips, rose petals and more.

Sometimes it is the leaves, the whole flower, sometimes just the flower.

It was full on in Japan, and I tried... but, euuhh, some are an 'acquired' taste = BITTER!!!

We go together everywhere!

I streets where no cars are allowed, on paths that are too narrow for cars.

I often annoy people, walking the streets, when I slalom between them, haha.

And cars when they cannot overtake me and have to drive as slowly as I do...

Trying to make good compositions from a moving car and bumps in the road, lololol

Heading for Honfleur and on to the Mont St Michel.

The Pont de Normandie is a cable-stayed road bridge that spans the river Seine linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy, northern France.

Its total length is 2,143.21 metres – 856 metres between the two piers. It is also the last bridge to cross the Seine before it empties into the ocean.

Taken through the windscreen, this is the bridge from the E44-A29 just before or after, depending where you come from, de Pont de Normandie... over the Grand Canal de Le Havre

Here it was to and after, we were on our way back from the Atlantic side of Brittany.

So many cars, mobile homes, caravans, lorries... I DO feel like I have been on a roller coaster... glad to be back home, in the silence, peace and calm.

MORE THAN EVER:

Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them!

I know I DID!

One of the important rituals when visiting a shrine in Japan takes place at the water purification fountain, known as the chozuya or temizuya next to the entrance.

Worshippers use ladles called hishaku to scoop up water to wash their hands and sometimes their mouths.

Due to the pandemic, many ladles have been removed from shrines and temples as a safety precaution.

Some people feared the custom was in danger of dying out.

Smuggler's Cove in Flamborough, one of our favourite haunts.

Magical place and wonderful people, their catch, mainly crabs and are beyond words.

They also catch lobsters... they go straight to the Continent...

During the week, these fisher folk are working from very early morning, on Sunday, they take people around the surrounding bays, and to view the cliffs like the famous Bempton Cliffs, with all their natural (bird) wildlife, some take people fishing.

Here the skipper eased his boat in with confidence, funny how they spot a lens aimed at them so quickly..

Mind your head!

Again uncropped, take the time and experience the joys of the discipline of composing your image in camera…

People seem to have different attitudes towards religion?

New Gods?

They used to attend mass on a Sunday, in the old days very much in the catholic and protestant churches of Europe, with best clothes on, the entire family.

Now they found a new thing to do, the entire family are now to be found in these modern Cathedrals: these shopping centers popping up all over, often the men look rather gruff till they see an Apple store" LOL

The children hate it and are pulling and wailing, till they get an ice cream or something sweet.

I mean shouldn't they be playing in a park or on a beach?Nobody looks very happy!

Except young couples love, they find happiness EVERYWHERE!

Ah well, it is progression...

I brought in the garden lights (8 plastic tubes with LED lights inside), decided to have some fun with them in the studio.

Here I'm using 2 tubes, I tried different techniques with the studio-lights.

To freeze me=washed out the lights too much.

So, the old joke was always that photographers did it in the dark! Here's PROOF!

The only 'problem' was I had to be absolutely still during about 5 secs, whilst MOVING the lights, well I had fun.

A weed is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, "a plant in the wrong place".

Examples commonly are plants unwanted in human-controlled settings, such as farm fields, gardens, lawns, and parks.

Taxonomically, the term "weed" has no botanical significance, because a plant that is a weed in one context is not a weed when growing in a situation where it is in fact wanted, and where one species of plant is a valuable crop plant, another species in the same genus might be a serious weed, such as a wild bramble growing among cultivated loganberries.

The term weed also is applied to any plant that grows or reproduces aggressively, or is invasive outside its native habitat.

We love visiting these places, full of activity.

The first time, the men are quite suspicious, and do not like you, but a smile, a kind hello in Spanish, lol, that goes a long way.

You are accepted, you are told some rapid fire Spanish stories, and I smile and laugh with them, wishing i understood, but my limited Spanish is not up to it!

#AbFav_The_COLOUR_PURPLE_💜

#AbFav_PHOTOSTORY

Purple is a colour intermediate between blue and red.

It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral colour with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a composite colour made by combining red and blue.

According to surveys in Europe and the U.S., purple is the colour most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and piety.

When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.

Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.

Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.

The deep, rich purple dye made from a sea snail called the spiny dye-murex became known as Tyrian purple.

The process of making the dye was long, difficult and expensive.

Thousands of the tiny snails had to be found, their shells cracked, the snail removed.

Mountains of empty shells have been found at the ancient sites of Sidon and Tyre.

The snails were left to soak, then a tiny gland was removed and the juice extracted and put in a basin, which was placed in the sunlight.

There a remarkable transformation took place.

In the sunlight the juice turned white, then yellow-green, then green, then violet, then a red which turned darker and darker.

The process had to be stopped at exactly the right time to obtain the desired colour, which could range from a bright crimson to a dark purple.

Then either wool, linen or silk would be dyed. The exact hue varied, but it was always rich, bright and lasting.

Purple, represented royally by this proud Anemone.

A Franz LISZT: CHRISTMAS-TREE SUITE.

Part 4 www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ek5Hz1Lb90

If, like me, you ears are tired of having all the pop Christmas music being rammed down your ears, but you still need beautiful sound caressing you, then, here you go!

Franz Liszt is a fine alternative.

Franz Liszt seems the last person who would write charming Christmas music.

Virtuoso fireworks, desperate passion and the smell of hell-fire was more his line.

But by 1881 he’d turned 70, and become a mild and introspective clergyman.

His music had become gentle, as this Christmas-tree Suite shows.

In the Autumn he went to stay in a modest hotel in Rome, where his grand-daughter Daniela kept him company.

On Christmas day he played the Suite for her and a few guests.

I have shoots where they give me things to photograph and never want it back, that means I can do my free photography when I have time, and after that, it goes to the charity shop.

Sprinkle a bit of festive angle-dust around you, you'll feel great!

I wish you all the very best, and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and faves.

Very much appreciated. M, (*_*)

SPURN POINT sea defences...

Spurn is a narrow sand tidal island located off the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

It was a spit with a semi-permanent connection to the mainland, but a storm in 2013 made the road down to the end of Spurn impassable to vehicles at high tide.

The island is over 3 miles (5 kilometres) long, almost half the width of the estuary at that point, and as little as 50 yards (46 m) wide in places.

The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and is the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and two disused lighthouses.

Over time, the whole spit, length intact, slips back – with the spit-head remaining on its glacial foundation.

This process has now been affected by the protection of the spit put in place during the Victorian era.

This protection halted the wash-over process and resulted in the spit being even more exposed due to the rest of the coast moving back 110 yards (100 m) since the 'protection' was constructed.

The now crumbling defences will not be replaced and the spit will continue to move westwards at a rate of 2.2 yards (2 m) per year, keeping pace with the coastal erosion further north.

or what is sadly left of it

We were there when it was still accessible!

After a job that took us around Hull, we decided to push through to Spurn-point.

Spurn is a very unique place in the British Islands.

It is a nature reserve.

Three and a half miles long and only fifty meters wide in places on the left side of the estuary of the river Humber.

There are a series of sea defence works built by the Victorians and maintained by the Ministry of defence, till they sold Spurn to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in the 1950s.

The defences are in a poor state, breaking down and crumbling, making Spurn a very fragile place wide open to the ravages of the North Sea.

It is a unique place, qua fauna and flora, very protected; there weren't many people on that Good Friday.

This is what is left of the sea defences on the North Sea side, eerie, tragic, but extremely photogenic...

The light was sweet.

Phalaenopsis Orchid, known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species.

Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.

It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland.

As we arrive there, the ancient boats thunder around the Cornish waters at St Mawes, as they hosts one of the colourful Falmouth Working Boat Races.

The Falmouth Estuary has long been a traditional centre for these events with each community along the waterfront The Falmouth Working boat fleets still race and have done so for over 100 years.

Between the quiet yet imposing forts of Pendennis and St Mawes lie the glistening waters of the Fal Estuary.

It is one of the best all-round sailing and safe cruising grounds in the world.

One of St Mawes' annual highlights is the Falmouth Working Boat World Championships hosted by the village.

It sees the estuary erupting in a whirl of coloured topsails as these boats, the wooden working boats from the 1870/80s, many of them antique, battle it out to be the best in their fleet.

The working boats themselves are something of a legend around the Fal Estuary.

A bylaw of the Fal oyster fishery - that fishing may only be done while rowing or sailing (usually under full sail, no engines!) - is largely responsible for the preservation of the fleet.

It was pure magic to see them cut through the water.

Only from a driving car!

I remember this being built!

The Van Brienenoord Bridge is an arch bridge for car traffic over the river Nieuwe Maas, which is a major distributary of the river Rhine.

The bridge is located at the east side of Rotterdam.

The bridge consists of two almost identical arches laying parallel next to each other, followed by three bascule bridges.

Every day over 250,000 vehicles cross the Van Brienenoord Bridge, which is part of the A16 highway, the most busy road in the Netherlands.

Bicycles can use the bridges to cross the Nieuwe Maas river.

The Van Brienenoord Bridge is 1320 metres long and ships of 24 metres and lower can pass through underneath it.

The eastern (287,5 m long) arch was built in 1965, the western (305 m long and slightly broader) one followed in 1990.

An average of 140.000 ships pass the bridge every year.

Approximately 500 of these ships require the bridge to be opened, a process which takes 18 minutes.

Suspending road traffic and opening the bridge takes 4 minutes, letting the ship pass takes 10 minutes, and closing the bridge requires an additional 4 minutes.

During this time, road traffic is blocked by boom barriers.

As of November 2005, the bridge is no longer controlled locally but from the nearby city of Rhoon, where the region's Road Traffic Control is located.

A request to open the bridge for shipping needs to be made at the harbour authorities at least three hours in advance.

People all ages feel the love.

Which is of course sadly NOT this year.

Hanami (花見, "flower viewing") is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers; flowers ("hana") are in this case almost always referring to those of the cherry ("sakura") or, less frequently, plum ("ume") trees.

...Amongst all the opulence, on the grass carpet, you could see that unfortunately people do not experience beauty in the same way, there were blossoms thrown all over the place, I saw two youngsters driving their bikes with their arms up, hitting every branch they could reach, leaving a trail of pink, they had fun...

I don't judge them, remember my own youth, we've all done silly stuff that now, but never anything like this, nothing destructive.

When you look or think back... you shake your head in disbelief... and sigh: why?

Because you are that age???

A broken off branch was left to wilt, I rescued it, it's adorning our dining room table now... not before I had photographed it in the studio, lol.

Whereas in China the cherry blossom symbolises feminine beauty, the feminine principle, or love in the language of herbs, in Japan the cherry blossoms are believed to exemplify the transient nature of life, because of their short blooming times.

Cherry blossoms also symbolise clouds due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.

Take care, be safe!

Have a sweet day and thank you, M, (*_*)

I bought this glass candle display in the charity shop.

Shaped as a sheet of ice, made out of glass, it reflects the light beautifully, works well on the table decorated with a few flowers, or small stars or holly, it is something that stimulates the creativity and my imagination.

But I still love it best like this.

Most of photos are taken with 'fresh' candles just lit; I prefer this, the more 'used' feeling...

In its early form, the candy cane began as a simple white stick of sugar for children to eat - there was no "cane" shape or stripes to speak of.

While it is uncertain where the first canes originated, it is clear that by the mid-17th century, if not earlier, its use had already become widespread across Europe.

The distinctive "hook" shape associated with candy canes is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight candy sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's crook, and gave them to children at church services.

It is also possible that, as people decorated their Yule trees with food, the bent candy cane was invented as a functional solution.

Wishing you a lovely day and thank you for all the nice comments, M, (*_*)

HAPPINESS IS... buying art.

This time it was not a sculpture or painting nor design, but GLASS.

For quite some time we wanted to photograph glass being blown by an artisan.

I found Marcel Vlamynck, a master glassblower, and contacted him, he was agreeable and the appointment was made.

The earliest evidence of glassblowing comes from a collection of waste from a glass shop, including fragments of glass tubes, glass rods and tiny blown bottles, which was dumped in a ritual bath in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, dated from 37 to 4 BC.

The transformation of raw materials into glass takes place at around 1,320 °C (2,400 °F) the glass emits enough heat to appear almost white hot.

The glass is then left to "fine out" (allowing the bubbles to rise out of the mass), and then the working temperature is reduced in the furnace to around 1,090 °C (2,000 °F).

At this stage, the glass appears to be a bright orange color.

We enjoyed a whole afternoon, and of course we went home with a piece of glass Art work!

The bottom is hugged by a blackened old branch, very special.

For those who are always cold: THAT IS THE JOB!!! LOL

Hope your day is good, thanks for viewing, Magda, (*_*)

Belgian Miserable cake... 4cmX4cm

Brought this from the Continent for you.

The Miserable is a wonderful almond sponge cake with a delicious buttercream filling: irresistible!

The cake is not as pitiful as the name suggests.

This small tart is among the top ten in the world of pastry.

Where it comes from is hard to figure out.

Around 1920 Pierre Gaelens works in Brussels at one of the most prestigious pastry shops in the country: 'Maison Jean Bol', run by two Swiss brothers.

There he learns to make Misérable.

The recipe he takes along to Knokke in 1932 and opens a bakery/patisserie on the Avenue des Arts.

In the Limburg Old Rekem they then claim that they made the best Misérable.

At the origin is a closely guarded secret recipe that baker Jan Jansen in 1929 brought back from Brussels and introduced in his village.

It has become the specialty of Old Rekem.

Another source indicates that the patisserie "Du Finistére" from Brussels, put almond cakes the first time in the shop window.

I could not find out the origin of the name though!

Such a delicacy... MISERABLE? I don't think so! LOL.

The big cube is a table in our living room, I just love glass and light, the distortions, the glows.

The other two glass cubes, I use for many things, a vase ets....

Once I got going in the studio, there was no stopping me.

But what I tried to do was, each time, create a completely DIFFERENT image with the same subject.

Top view of a glass cube on a glass cube on a light cube, still with me, lol?

Different lights give different hues on film, this came out more yellow, but I didn’t feel like removing the colourcast, liked it as it was.

Kanazawa, a lovely city, lies between Tokyo and Kyoto.

We spent a great few days there!

The last warm sunlight, ook how it makes the old wood glow.

Japanese old wooden house.

We visited the whole neighbourhood, BEAUTIFUL!!!

Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses found throughout Japan.

This here is in Kanazawa.

Machiya or townhouses and nōka (farm dwellings) constitute the two categories of Japanese vernacular architecture known as minka (folk dwellings).

Machiya originated as early as the Heian period and continued to develop through to the Edo period and even into the Meiji period.

Machiya housed urban merchants and craftsmen, a class collectively referred to as chōnin (townspeople).

The new: the ultra-modern grand station of Kanazawa.

Trees play a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate.

They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their tissues.

Trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals and plants.

Tropical rainforests are among the most biodiverse habitats in the world.

Trees provide shade and shelter, timber for construction, fuel for cooking and heating, and fruit for food as well as having many other uses.

In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture.

Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures, and they play a role in many of the world's mythologies.

You cannot visit Brugge, and return without a photo with or of a SWAN.

Why Swans in Brugge?

THE LEGEND:

At the end of the 15th century, the oppressed people of Bruges rose in revolt against the unpopular Emperor Maximilian of Austria.

They captured Maximilian and imprisoned him in the Craenenburg House on the Market Square, together with his equally unpopular adviser, Pieter Lanckhals.

Lanckhals was condemned to death and Maximilian was forced to watch the execution.

The Emperor eventually escaped and later took his revenge: he decreed that ‘until the end of time’ the city should be required at its own expense to keep swans on all its lakes and canals.

And why swans? Because swans have long necks – and the Flemish for ‘long neck’ is ‘lange hals’ – or ‘lanckhals’!

And so a city legend was born…

THE FACT? More likely…

The first swans in Bruges go back to the Middle Ages.

In the early 15th century, Bruges bought the right to keep swans from the Count of Flanders.

At that time swans were a symbol of distinction.

The killing or stealing swans was forbidden.

Swans were first mentioned in the city accounts in 1403.

At that time the swans tended to stay on the vests around the city because the canals were the water highways of the city and too busy for the swans.

A Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), preening in Spring.

The mute swan is commonly associated with romance because of its stark white beauty, graceful swimming and the fact that it mates for life.

Yet there are many things most people don’t know about this swan, including that it is not native to North America and it can be one of the most aggressive waterfowl.

I chose the graphic composition, because I wanted something different.

Hope you like it too.

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)

An old craft, very zen, tried it!

Not something you see often these days?

Louet wheels treadle lightly, are low maintenance and nearly adjustment free and can be modified with accessories for the expert spinner.

Louet wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns.

Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns.

This type of wheel is powered by the spinner's foot rather than their hand or a motor.

The spinner sits and pumps a foot treadle that turns the drive wheel via a crankshaft and a connecting rod.

This leaves both hands free for drafting the fibres, which is necessary in the short draw spinning technique, which is often used on this type of wheel.

Take care, be safe!
