"The Wasps were owned by the Navy, as I believe the SH2G’s on 6 Sqn are.
All the shipboard maintenance kit, tech manuals, F700’s & Auth Books and are also owned by the Navy. They were only managed by the Airforce. Airforce tool control prevailed. If Royal Navy processes differed from RNZAF, then Airforce prevailed.
Trade management – Each member of the ships flight was a different trade and was the NCO i/c that trade. As we were all cross trained, we became the ‘tradesman’ for the other trades. The 3 Avtechs shared Radar.
We all had supplementary duties that covered trades not in the flight. I was responsible for Armament / weapon prep including Torpedoes & Depth Charges. When loading onto the aircraft, the F/S was the NCO i/c, I was safety supervisor and the others the tradesman.
Radio guy was the Flight Storeman & Electrician was the Librarian. Similar roles for the mechanical guys.
When we were posted to a ship, we lived a dual life subject to both the Airforce and Navy discipline regulations. When on board the Navy regs ruled and when ashore like at Hobby or Tengah the Airforce regs ruled.
Same for uniforms, although we often cheated a bit. The main difference was when the navy was required to wear the White No. 1’s we had to wear No3SD’s. On board our working dress was navy."

Taken 17/04/25; The De Havilland Heron seen here is the former G-ANUO, which was last operated by Topflight and Avtech in the 1980s and 1990s. Decommissioned in August 1996 in November of that year it was placed on display outside the former Croydon Airport's terminal building. It is painted to represent G-AOXL of Morton Air Services, the last aircraft to make a passenger flight from Croydon Airport on 30 Oct 1959. The original G-AOXL having been sold to Norway in 1971.
