View of the medieval Porte de la République, just north of the Avignon railway station.
Avignon once had a tramway system (opened 1899 January 1; closed 1932 May 31), and a new one is under construction.
"TRAM du Grand Avignon" project: Two tramway lines are under construction or in planning, as follows:
T1: Saint-Chamand -- Gare Centre -- Saint-Roch, 5.2 km (3.2 mi). Opening planned for 2019 October 19.
Service to Jean Jaurès is planned to follow during 2023.
Extension northward, Jean Jaurès -- Place de l'Horloge, forecast as long-term project.
T2: ÃŽle Piot -- (Saint-Roch -- Gare Centre) -- Saint-Lazare, 3.2 km (2.0 mi). Opening planned for 2023 September.
Extension eastward, Saint-Lazare -- Le Lac Le Pontet -- Le Pontet Gare / Réalpanier, forecast as long-term project.

UPDATE: The initial tram line, Saint Roch -- Gare Centre -- Saint Chamand, 5.2 km (3.2 mi), opened as planned on 2019 October 19.
Construction of line T2, scheduled previously to start during 2021, has been postponed for two years in order to limit the impact on businesses weakened by the coronavirus disease pandemic during 2020. Opening is planned currently for 2025.

The École Primaire Saint Ruf (right) had 125 students when it opened in 1902 October. There were four classes: two primary classes only for boys, and two pre-primary classes (classes maternelles) for boys and girls. At the time, girls of primary school age attended either the École Primaire Monclar à Avignon or religious schools.
The first director of the École Primaire Saint Ruf was Léopold-Gustave Ricard.
