Halloween photo-fest!
This is a tribute to one of my favourite bands discovered this year. Aural Vampire are a two piece J-Trance group, and this photo is a tribute to the video for their last single Cannibal Coast, where singer EXO-CHIKA flies through the night on a giant bat. You can watch the awesome video here

Here's a list of artists whose music is currently in my mobile sanctuary - my iPod / iTunes. As you can see, I'm all over the map when it comes to music. I listen to everything from classical to black metal to music from Nepal.
No, I didn't hand-type this list. And no, this list doesn't reflect my entire music collection.

1414 looks on while 1566 provides some aural entertainment while being given a work out in Barreiro Works
Fountains in public squares are as ubiquitous as tourists and pigeons. Almost universally they are positioned to provide visual and aural focus and asked to contribute to street life with their sparkle and splash. Ajijic Mexico’s fountain has yet another, subtler role.
Photograph and Text by Charlene Meredith and Douglas Pollard
The first clue to IT’Ss role is its location, far from the heart of the square and out of sight at the very end of a callejon (pedestrian alleyway) connecting the square to an adjacent street.
The second clue is its design. Ajijic’s population of 10,000 Mexicans and ex pats includes many gifted artists who normally would contribute to the fountain design as they have to the many outdoor sculptures, murals, paving inlays and colour schemes. Instead, the fountain is an uninspiring, grey emotionless and bulky object, festooned with four curious corner elements that would obscure any water movement if, indeed, there was ever any water in it.
In truth it is simply a big bulky bollard, placed and designed to end previous frequent and endangering attendance by pick up driving Tequila enthusiasts at the many fiestas and events. Access is now only by foot, including those of the occasional horse

From the opening squeals of the guitars of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman and the punishing breakaway attack of Dave Lombardo's drums on "Flesh Storm" it's clear from the first thirty seconds the thrash metal titans have returned to pummel listeners with a raging onslaught of new music guaranteed to lay waste to MP3 players, car stereo speakers and whatever else gets in their way.
Christ Illusion marks the long-awaited return of the legendary Slayer. Its first record in five years and its first record in fifteen years with the original band line-up, Christ Illusion is a cacophony of brutality. A soundtrack for the post-Apocalypse. Steeped in scorching riffs and a litany of menacing tracks/tirades on religion and violence, Slayer forges ahead on its devastating path of aural destruction with ten new songs, each charged with the electric hostility for which Slayer is renowned.
Of the record Kerry King is ecstatic: "I love it. I really like God Hates Us All and I think that's the best record we've done in my opinion since Seasons In The Abyss, and I like this better than that one. I think it's a more complete record, I think sonically it better: all the performances are awesome. I think this one is more intense not because we're trying to do 'Reign In Blood: The Sequel,' it's just that's where our writing is taking us now."
Songs like the "Flesh Storm," "Eyes of the Insane," "Skeleton Christ," "Jihad" and the first single, "Cult" showcase the band at its most blazing intensity. The sonic excitement of speed, propelled by King, Hanneman and Lombardo and lead by the immutable roar of Tom Araya provoke the listener with Slayer's trademark fascination with terror, violence and religion.
For as long as Slayer has been making records it has been surrounded by controversy.
Since the band recorded its first album, "Show No Mercy," Slayer has been plagued with accusations of Satanism, fascism, racism and so on. Christ Illusion gives no quarter to critics who would mindlessly attack the band for, what the Germans call, "der Reiz des Unbekannten" (meaning "the attraction of the unknown"). A lyric fascination with violence and terror which guitarist King enthusiastically describes this way: "When I was I kid I would see a horror movie over a love story. Being shocked, being in an environment that's not reality might be frightening but is cool nonetheless. With a lot of our songs we put people in that place. It doesn't bother me because I enjoy it. It could easily be programming from all the fucking news channels."
Slayer is often assailed for its subject matter, though the band is unrepentant. " According to Araya, "Violence, darkness... So much of my inspiration comes from news articles or pictures and just start describing the images. Television- A&E, the History Channel, Court TV, Documentaries."
The singer continues, "With this record, as far as a theme: there is none. That's just our favorite subject matter. The common thread is death. I think that's just a common thread in general: we all share death, and we all share it at different times in different ways, but it's the one thing that we all have in common. We all die. It's how we live that makes us different."
Beyond being controversial Slayer is an exceptional force in music, highly praised for its trailblazing style of fast, heavy and aggressive music yet bristling with melody. The much-heralded return of Dave Lombardo to the drummer's throne will leave fans gasping for breath as he clobbers the listener on song after song.
Commenting on Lombardo's return to the fold, King notes, "Not to say the shine's worn off, but it's old news to us. I think the thing the kids are going to get into, besides just being the first Slayer album in five years, is that Dave's on it. When he came back he wasn't a member, he just came back to do a couple of tours and people started asking back then 'Is he gonna hang around?' And I would tell them that was up to Dave. But I could tell that Dave was having a killer time." King confided. "So it was just a matter of time before he said, 'Yeah, let's do it!' But it's great. And now that he's got a new Slayer album that he's played on, I think he's going to get some more enjoyment out of playing. He takes pride in everything he does and it's awesome to have him back with us."
Having the original members record their first album together in fifteen years is certainly newsworthy but the lasting might of the band and its continued popularity is an achievement few can boast. For each of the members, the band is resolute. There is no other band like Slayer.
"The staying power behind Slayer is that we've stuck to our guns," Says Araya. "Integrity... that would be number one. A lot of it has to do with the fact that we've stuck to what we do best. And the fact that we've been together as a band for so long. Ten years with Dave; another ten without Dave; and now Dave's back. It has a lot to do with compromise, that's just the way it has to be. You have to be able to compromise and give and take and that has a lot to do with why we're still together and a force to be reckoned with. I've learned that without each other, Slayer wouldn't exist, and that the whole is greater than its parts."
Kerry King is far more succinct. "Slayer to me is the coolest band on the planet. There is a timeless quality to Slayer. It's cool, but I can't explain it. It's our life."
Slayer has created one mesmerizing record after the next, has influenced many of today's most successful bands, including Slipknot, Sepultura, Killswitch Engage, and continues to earn new generations of fans, while staying true to its ceaselessly devoted followers. Slayer's legacy is cemented in music forever and the band remains undaunted in its directive to make punishing, aggressive and exciting music. With Christ Illusion the band marks its territory. Slayer has exceeded itself far beyond thrash metal to become an unstoppable juggernaut without equal.
Tom Araya sums it up: "I think the best thing is the band's longevity and the fact that we haven't bowed to anyone. That we were able to make a record like Reign In Blood, which, to us, was just another record, but to others, was something very special, it's had such an impact. People will remember it for a long time, and it's all because we did things our way, we didn't bow down to anyone. We didn't compromise. We stuck to being who we are."

We stuck to being who we are."

listening to belsen was a gas performed by sid vicious, live
A relentless aural, visual and physical assault by Les Frères Chimiques marked their EDM son et lumière at the O2 Arena. A show so loud your chest cavity reverberates and your ears are "fizzing" hours later. Visually stunning and impossible to do justice in stills on a mobile phone, it is an immersive experience that threatens to drown you.

--- Ruby & The Vines ---
Ruby & The Vines are hotly tipped as a ''wild, hot and about to happen new trio". They debuted their unique brand of afro-rock in June 2010 to great acclaim at the Celebrating Sanctuary festival, hosted by BBC London.
Fronted by vocalist/bassist Binisa Bonner, the band fuse influences as diverse as Congolese roots music, jazz, afro-beat and reggae. The line-up is completed by guitarist Greg Sanders and drummer Ben Assiter, who complement Binisa's soulful, frank vocal delivery and deftly melodic bass lines with a meticulous groove.

--- The Slow Revolt ---
The Slow Revolt is the solo project from the vocalist/guitarist of the experimental rock group The Feral Text. Drawing esoteric strands of underground club music, electronica, and post-rock into powerful, avant-pop song; his live shows bring looped guitar, rich, freeform vocals, raw synths and dense polyrhythms into a powerful, involving experience.
After a year playing alongside the likes of Dose One, Fog, Wild Palms, Evi Vine, and a stage at The Camden Crawl, this performance at Stop Look Listen will be the final show of the year as work begins on a 2012 LP release.
--- Holly Walker ---
Holly Walker is based in London, lives in Camden, plays the ivories and sings like a small hungry bird.
She describes her genre as wayward thrash pop and writes mostly about love, loss and lunch.
--- Fly Away Peter ---
Hampshire-based duo Fly Away Peter are Flis (vocals, guitar) and Phil (bass). Their music is a unique blend of styles that mainly falls somewhere between folk and pop.
Hosted by --- Zoe Konez ---
Zoe tears up the singer/songwriter stereotype, delivering rousing tales through blazing guitar gymnastics, intense vocal melodies, edgy altered-tunings and irregular-rhythms.
Stop Look Listen is a night of thrilling alternative acoustic music held on the first Tuesday of every month at exciting venue Native Tongue EC1.
Zoe Konez hosts a pick of live acts from all musical genres, with a similarly eclectic mix of between-set aural treat provided by Stop Look Listen DJ Mopicide.
The headline acts each month will be a band or artist who is not usually akin to playing such nights. We ask them to do something different for one night only and strip their sound to an acoustic or near acoustic set up.

*Aural Memory Machine* (AMM) is an eight-channel sound installation played by visitors present in Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral. No musical training or technical skills are required of audience members; all they have to do is use a midi-keyboard to input texts that, in real time, trigger field recordings having to do with the 2013 Ars Electronica Festival theme. In this way, audience members inputting texts at eight terminals can discursively get involved in the theme and simultaneously create a spatial sound installation.

I'm listening within, ditching without, and feeling so curious about people, choices and transformation.
I'm listening with my third ear.
Aural Stories.
It was obvious that when Primus planned this show, the visual experience was just as important as the aural experience, but most of the show found the members of the band in very low light or dark shadows. I like seeing performers when they play but I don't plan their shows. So many of the shots were taken in very low light with high ISO which meant I had to use high levels of noise removal in post processing to make the images presentable. I still had a blast at the show though.

Friday: Good things that happened yesterday: I got my fork repaired,
by a DPW regular at Gigsville named Jetfuel, a real sweetheart.
I'm remembering how many times the DPW have rescued me -- when the
Aural Reef got robbed of wood and sheet metal in 2002, when we all
had to be towed out of the mud in 2000, when I was exhausted last
Saturday, stuck on the other side of town and desperately needed to
be abducted to a Jamison's whiskey and punk rock party. The DPW
have always come through for me. The old-timers here are the ones
I like, the ones who are actually a little crazy and fun and not
just gawkers. There's a bunch of them over at Gigsville, and they
invited me to move over there. Because I've been thinking about leaving.
Good things cont'd: visited friends on the other side of town,
gradually got talked down from the bummer I was on by Cory, one of Kelly's
campmates. We went on an art ride and saw the Cyclephone -- a great
idea, done cheap and well. We need one of those in Portland. Hung
out with the Trenway kids last night, went to a stilt bar on the tallbike
with Larsen & his triple-stack. Went to a nice prom party at
Gigsville, ate fresh pizza baked in a burning car. Successfully
avoided home. Partied on the playa with Midnight Ridazz and
a few Zoobombers.
Bad things from yesterday; realizing that the playa at night
is an endless sea of incredibly bad techno at blistering volume,
paired with bright flashing lights and 24-hour party people. It
bores the shit out of me. It makes people really aimless
and stupid -- especially if they are tripping balls, as most people
seem to be most nights. Tonight I will not be seperated from
my bike, end if I'm out there I'm going all the way out. I think
maybe I'll just set up at the trash fence with my guitar. (How
do I carry that fucker on my bike?)
Today I want to visit the Library -- which I was told is the
purpose, or one such purpose, of the large lovely pagoda near
4:00 and esplinade. Then at 3 there's a plan for a Zoobomb art
ride, getting out and exploring the deep playa. Hopefully not
too very hot. Also for today; ice, harmonica lessons, and
maybe I can return some borrowed items to AV. And breakfast
of some kind -- although I can probably count upon people giving me
random items of food all day long.
Hadrian's Union play The Old Fire Station, Carlisle, Cumbria
Hadrian’s Union are a five piece Contemporary Folk Rock band from the debatable lands of England and Scotland. The name originates from the locality and mindset of the band, Hadrian's Union (or HU for short) as seperate members are based along various points of Hadrian's Wall, they all come from various music genres (Folk, Punk, Rock, Blues,Celtic, Ska etc) which reflects in the music they create together.
The music is varied and ultimately for the listener all of HU's shows and recordings are an exciting experience. Waltzes, Ballads, Music Hall and drinking songs and so much that you will find in the Union. HU will not be pigeon holed into one category but can often be found at Folk festivals in the loosely termed Folk Rock section, they are at home as much at a rock show as they are in a folk club, and to boot they love a bit of Steampunk too.
Hadrian's Union have recently finished recording there most adventureous album to date, 'Aural Borderalis', which will be released in Summer 2017. The album is produced by Saul Rose (Faustus,Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band) and is an ecclectic mix of music inspired by the various influences brought to the Union by the members of the band.
Hadrian’s Union are BBC Folk Award Winners Brian Bell (Bass Guitar also with Whapweasel) & Robin Jowett (Melodeon and Keys),Penny Kempson (Violin & Viola- also with Out of Hand and Random), Dave Pratt on drums with Hadrian's Union founding member Stew Simpson on Guitar and vocals

The Dali Menuet, a mini monitor speaker the size of a shoebox with a stunningly powerful, clear and undistorted voice and an amazing mid-range for vocals.
Driven by my Hegel amplifier with an Auralic music streamer, listening to music with cup of coffee is just pure pleasure.
A truly high end audiophile speaker.
