Friday: Good things that happened yesterday: I got my fork repaired,
by a DPW regular at Gigsville named Jetfuel, a real sweetheart.
I'm remembering how many times the DPW have rescued me -- when the
Aural Reef got robbed of wood and sheet metal in 2002, when we all
had to be towed out of the mud in 2000, when I was exhausted last
Saturday, stuck on the other side of town and desperately needed to
be abducted to a Jamison's whiskey and punk rock party. The DPW
have always come through for me. The old-timers here are the ones
I like, the ones who are actually a little crazy and fun and not
just gawkers. There's a bunch of them over at Gigsville, and they
invited me to move over there. Because I've been thinking about leaving.
Good things cont'd: visited friends on the other side of town,
gradually got talked down from the bummer I was on by Cory, one of Kelly's
campmates. We went on an art ride and saw the Cyclephone -- a great
idea, done cheap and well. We need one of those in Portland. Hung
out with the Trenway kids last night, went to a stilt bar on the tallbike
with Larsen & his triple-stack. Went to a nice prom party at
Gigsville, ate fresh pizza baked in a burning car. Successfully
avoided home. Partied on the playa with Midnight Ridazz and
a few Zoobombers.
Bad things from yesterday; realizing that the playa at night
is an endless sea of incredibly bad techno at blistering volume,
paired with bright flashing lights and 24-hour party people. It
bores the shit out of me. It makes people really aimless
and stupid -- especially if they are tripping balls, as most people
seem to be most nights. Tonight I will not be seperated from
my bike, end if I'm out there I'm going all the way out. I think
maybe I'll just set up at the trash fence with my guitar. (How
do I carry that fucker on my bike?)
Today I want to visit the Library -- which I was told is the
purpose, or one such purpose, of the large lovely pagoda near
4:00 and esplinade. Then at 3 there's a plan for a Zoobomb art
ride, getting out and exploring the deep playa. Hopefully not
too very hot. Also for today; ice, harmonica lessons, and
maybe I can return some borrowed items to AV. And breakfast
of some kind -- although I can probably count upon people giving me
random items of food all day long.

HANDEL: Serse
Forrester, Popp, Lehane, Miller, Tyler; Hemsley, Brannigan; Vienna Academy Chorus, Vienna Radio Orchestra, Priestman. Text and translation. Deutsche Grammophon CD 477 8339 (3)
opera news
Deutsche Grammophon has delved into its vaults to reissue the very first "complete" studio recording of Handel's Serse. (Absent are one recitative and the B section of Serse's aria "Più che penso," crossed out in Handel's autograph score.) Recorded in 1965 and originally issued on the Westminster label, this fine performance has never been available on CD, nor has it previously been issued complete on LP outside of the United States. Its return to the catalogue is most welcome.
Maureen Forrester's rich, lustrous tone brings an ideal gravity to the role of Serse that aurally distinguishes her from the rest of the cast. While a high note may occasionally present a challenge that is not entirely surmounted, the Canadian contralto's musicianship, vocal power and ability to spin out amazingly long phrases always win the day.
It is pure joy to hear Lucia Popp's girlish Romilda, recorded at the beginning of her career and just a year after her triumphant Queen of the Night for Klemperer on EMI. Her voice is fresh, effortlessly produced and used with the sensitivity and musicality that would always characterize her singing. Melismatic passages, such as those found in "Se l'idol mio," are rendered flawlessly and with deceptive ease, and her singing is completely free of the "note squeezing" mannerism she would later develop. Marilyn Tyler is superb as Romilda's sister Atalanta, her dusky soprano providing a clear contrast to Popp's gleaming tone, and she exhibits an impressive range up to a brilliantly finessed high D in the final cadenza of "Voi mi dite." Distinguished vocal contributions also come from Maureen Lehane as Arsamene, particularly impressive in rapid-fire coloratura, and Mildred Miller as the perpetually disguised Amastre. Thomas Hemsley and Owen Brannigan are satisfactory as Ariodate and Elviro, respectively. Conductor Brian Priestman's tempos seem spot-on throughout the work, and he leads the Vienna Radio Orchestra - playing on modern instruments - in a surprisingly stylish performance for this vintage. Martin Isepp's harpsichord riffs are inventive and always enjoyable, if occasionally rather amusingly over the top.
The stereo sound, newly remastered from original master tapes, is mostly superb, with plentiful orchestral detail and a robust lower range, although occasionally some very mild distortion dims the brilliance of the higher frequencies. The wide soundstage employed suggests character movement, and several sound effects are used to add further theatricality. (The Act II thunder effect is successful, but the subsequent "swordfight" is hopelessly silly.) Popp's angelic offstage singing at the beginning of the opera is beautifully realized, with a glowing aura of ambience surrounding the voice. It is totally believable that Serse could fall in love with Romilda at first listen - just as one will probably fall in love with the many charms of this performance.
Bronksi Beat were a find band, not perhaps "great" in the sense of some of their synth-pop contemporaries such as Pet Shop Boys or Depeche Mode, but a fine band nonetheless and deserving of recognition for their moody, reflective club-friendly pop with often beautiful aural textures. Formed in 1983 by Glaswegians Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski and Londoner Larry Steinbachek their debut album, "Age of Consent" was an instant hit across the UK with its strong formula of dancey tunes and insightful songwriting - an elegant and unusual balance not normally found in 'club-friendly' albums, then or now.
However, Bronski Beat would come to be defined by one powerful anthem that spoke not just for gay men and women, but to anybody who'd ever been on the receiving end of racism and discrimination. Much like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, this records' undoubted power and resonance would overshadow the bands other achievements and efforts, whilst conversely ensuring that Bronksi Beat would never be forgotten. The record is of course, "Smalltown Boy", Bronski Beats debut single and to this day a song that I never tire of listening to. Not only was the record itself an incredible listen with a strong message, but anybody who's ever seen the simple music video remembers its haunting power as a young gay man cruises for no-strings sex at a swimming pool, before being forsaken by his father and later beaten to a pulp by intolerant youths. The issue was incredibly topical for working class society that was still deeply wary, if not openly hostile, to the emerging gay culture revolution that was happening across Britain at this time in the early to mid 80's. It demonstrated the fear and frustration many young men and women would have felt about 'coming out', especially to their parents and peers.
Smalltown Boy's strengths and complexities, musically and lyrically, lie in its simplicity. The songwriting is superlative, deeply moving and resonant without falling into the trap of sentimentality and pretension. It is evident that the themes were incredibly personal to openly gay singer Jimmy Somerville, and it is with Somerville that we find Bronski Beat's most memorable feature; his voice. Unlike any other in pop, uniquely emotive, capable of expressing anguish and bliss, often at the same time and then soaring into a magnificent falsetto that is strangely positive given the whirlpool of internal strife the sound conveys. Somerville's voice is one of those that only come around once in decade, a Cash, a Dylan or a Galas. A gift to the listener.
Somerville's voice builds around a stunning backdrop of throbbing drum machine and an elegant synth melody that compliments the elegiac quality of the vocal work. Smalltown Boy is one of those songs that regularly finds its way onto 'Best Of' albums and compilations, or simply as one of those records that echo down the years, finding a new generation of fans as Somerville's sweet choirboy trill reaches out into the ether, perhaps even more powerful 30 years later.

Aural suggestions about Manhood, Love, Silence
Best viewed: large
Vesuvius is a lesson about manhood love and silence, a man that lets the snow touch his skin, looking at the sea, keeping his fire inside. By walking on his lips, one figures out that he's living, he's breathing. He quietly smokes with love and hate - he has the power to kill but he doesn't, he keeps us in his power. Though everything is silent, unbelievably silent, everything is still, everything is calm, everything is quiet. Vesuvius is one of the few things that keeps me here in these places where love ends and death begins. And viceversa.

Binjai looks with a real stare at us human visitors.
Binjai is in heat again, and her would-be male suitor, Ramalon was constantly calling to her.
It was amazing to hear him call - a true aural highlight!
However, sadly at present for both Binjai and Ramalon, the international body that controls the breeding program for the highly endangered Sumatran tiger has not given RMZ permission for more cubs.
Royal Melbourne Zoo has Ramalon as its resident male tiger, who alternates in the display area.
Binjai, is about 7 yo female who had 3 cubs born October 2006.
One died accidently as a result of drowning at 15 months, but the other two cubs were successfully raised for 2 and a bit years, until late last year, they were sent overseas.
When Binjai is allowed to have more cubs, she and her cubs will be kept separate from Ramalon, as would be the case in the wild.
Royal Melbourne Zoo participates in an active program to reclaim land in Sumatra as a wildlife haven for Sumatran tigers, which are critically endangered, as well as participate in a captive breeding program to ensure the survival of this magnificent animal. But, without a wild and free population, what would be the point?
So, education, rehabilitation and working with Indonesian wildlife agencies takes place to help build up the wild populations of this tiger.
