Artistic Time Zero (ATZ)
expired 9-2009
Ghent, NY
A collaboration with the very talented Miss Emily Hassell.
As I've whined a lot in my recent uploads, ATZ that has made it this far degrades. It degrades a lot lot lot. I mean, it's been expired, I don't know what I expect from it. All the creamy beautiful pastel tones find themselves yellow/green and flat in a few days time. For most images, the medium completely obscures and perverts the message. I think this is the one time that the rotting has served me well.
This image is one that went from flat and dull to moody and haunting and I love it. The tones and darkness remind me a lot of F2B. (Which I really really need to shoot! Ack!) I was really struggling to find a way to shoot Joshua Tree and I don't think I was alone in that. It was difficult. The light was harsh. It was probably the wrong place to go. Death Valley would probably have been a better destination. I shot mostly film there, so I'll be interested to see how that turned out. (Portra 160 VC in my Nikon SLR and some Ektar in my Rollei. Had the Velvia. Couldn't pull the trigger. I very rarely shoot slide film because slides scare the crap out of me.)
If you're interested, I would suggest looking at this large or original size. I ended up going 1200 dpi on the scan - the others from the trip have been 600 - and I'm glad I did. There is just so much to this image. And no cheesy textures this time either! All natural film perversion. I do have to say that a tiny bit of a fill flash might have been nice, but as the SX-70 has no PC socket...
The whole time we were out there, I was in a Kyuss mood, but didn't have any on my phone. Next time I'm out in the desert, I'm going to have to make a point for that not to be the case. I'm making up for it by lifting titles from their songs. This one is from "Demon Cleaner," off their fantastic Welcome to Sky Valley album. It almost feels too literal to listen to Kyuss in the California desert, but damn if it doesn't suit the surroundings.
Not sure why I look so mad. I really wasn't, I swear.
I can't believe it's already the 12th week of this 52 week project! This
year is flying by faster than any other year so far, but that's probably
because I'm getting older and I hear that's what happens. Time moves
quicker.
Highlight of my week would probably be today, July 4th. We planned on
staying in and watching movies but decided to take a quick drive up the
mountain, to talk and take some photos. It's nice, being able to just sit
around with someone and talk for hours about absolutely nothing but still
have the best time in the world. Today was one of those days.
Happy 4th of July!
I found the ATZ film in the fridge and got an ache for shooting roses, fresh or withered:)
See the full gallery at blanc[che] . Thank you:))

i hadn't planned on posting this, but lucy got unusually quiet a day or two later, and she died early this morning -- no idea what was wrong with her. she was an incredibly sweet-tempered bird who acted as foster mom to one of the other chicks, despite only being a week or so older -- and she was quite a lady, i always thought the gray speckles around her neck looked like a string of pearls. i will miss her.

Artistic Time Zero from the Impossible Project - this scan taken within a couple of hours of the shot, and matched as closely as possible to the colours on the original Polaroid. It looks quite different seven months later, I'll wait a little longer and share the re-scan results later this year.
Flying Virgin America from SFO to LAX during the golden hour. I was like a kid in a candy store with the light.
Flying Virgin America was one of the best flights I have ever been on. Too bad it was only 45 minutes.

If you look closely, you can see Candlestick Park, The Bay Bridge, and Downtown San Francisco.
Island is all around in german medias.
Because of Eyjafjallajökull - the vulcano.
And this great record is from Island aswell.

hooray, today is the start of polaroid week!!
(i really, really wish the person who made this tree out of red masking tape hadn't added the word "hope," but it was too good to pass up either way)

At the back of the First York James Street depot, five of York's Wright Streetcars are parked up for a while until space is found for them at their new home in Leeds... and a couple of Park and Ride buses have been mixed into the lineup (but these won't go to leeds!)
The far left vehicle is 19011 (YK06 AUC) I believe, then 19004 (B7 FTR - quite a clever cherished registration), 69367, 19006 (OO06 FTR - another cherished registration), 19003 (YK06 ATU), 11105 (BG58 OLX Mercedes Citaro)), 19008 (YK06 ATZ).
This may be the last picture of these vehicles in York.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Polaroid SX70. Polaroid ATZ.
"Whatever it expresses – even destruction and ruin – the artistic image is by definition an embodiment of hope, it is inspired by faith...."
- from 'Time Within Time'
by Andrei Tarkovsky
Paul Giambarba is the genius behind Polaroid's branding in the 60's and 70's - such a clear idea of how to present a product so that it will stand out on the shelf, and define itself as a brand. The rainbow stripes and squares of the SX70 are familiar, but the older packaging is less so. Except the beautiful clean blocks of colour and bold text are what Giambarba returned to when asked by The Impossible Project to produce packaging for the last stock of Polaroid film they had. shop.the-impossible-project.com/news?date=2009-12-18&...

(His Branding of Polaroid site seems to be down at the moment - but visit when it’s back up - it’s essential: giam.typepad.com/the_branding_of_polaroid_/)
I found this in a charity shop in Bury St Edmunds (the flash is inside), not too expensive, and utterly priceless. It looks good on my shelf next to some of the newer Giambarba edition boxes.

me on another hot afternoon
yesterday hit 107°F here, just crazy hot -- today's supposed to be another scorcher, and it's also the first day of classes for me -- teaching at 8am! welcome to the fall semester...
Meet Tiger. He's the most gentle kitty cat, and such a sweet nature. He was born the runt of the litter and use to suck his paw when he was a young tike. I remember the first day we brought him home he was so excited at seeing grass for the first time, he ran straight into the back window. He's always have the most gorgeous eyes, the softest fur, and he adores cuddles at night. He is the biggest guts ever, loves his food with a passion! A few months back we thought we nearly lost him. He lost about 2kgs, and wouldn't eat, his white blood count was at one when it should be 10+. Two doses of antibiotics later, and he's put on weight and he's happy again. I really love this little cutey!
