Polaroid SX70. Polaroid ATZ film.

I wasn't going to post this one - I don't like it very much. But then I got tagged by rebeccamissing. Apparently I had to post the fifth image in my fifth folder, whatever it happened to be.

This is the kind of thing I would normally never do (redolent as it is of chain letters, but without even the promise of eternal happiness to motivate it). However, the 5/5 thing is resonant for me, as the 5th of May happens to be my birthday. Also, rebeccamissing is one of my very favouritest Pola-people. So I had to do it.

I keep my polas in little books, and the fifth book I started was the ATZ book, and this was the 5th ATZ shot I did.... As I said - I don't think it's much of a shot. I remember the impulse behind it, and thinking "yeah yeah this'll be great" as I pressed the red button. And then that slow sinking feeling as I thought "hmm. this doesn't really work, does it?"

Still - sometimes it's interesting to see the ones that don't make it - the stuff that normally stays behind the scenes, but is all part of your learning process.... And for that reason alone, I am hereby tagging the following people:

To the solemn sea the old women come

With their shawls knotted around their necks

With their fragile feet cracking.

They sit down alone on the shore

Without moving their eyes or their hands

Without changing the clouds or the silence.

~ From The Old Women of The Ocean, Pablo Neruda

Some extra's from 'roid week :)

cissie and i drove down the coast yesterday afternoon -- low clouds coming in but with a few breaks to make for the most gorgeous far-off gleam on the water, and i swear the waves were breaking in slow motion, at a very low ebb tide...

I kept my ATZ in the fridge all this time, wanted not to spill it. Today I could not resist anymore. First time use and I just love it :-)

OK, so as if his father's poem wasn't enough, the Tarkvosky Polaroids book then goes on to deliver an extraordinary statement from the man himself - one that seemed exceptionally relevant to what we're doing here in Roid Week, so I'll be quoting it as we count down to the end of this amazing five days....

"An artistic image is one that ensures its own development. This image is a grain, a self-evolving retroactive organism. It is a symbol of actual life, as opposed to life itself...."

new camera arrived today! a lovely SX-70 i found on ebay, & some ATZ film to go with it.

i managed to snap this picture of my desk before realizing the sx70 doesn't have an autofocus like the SLR680 -- but i kind of like the result anyway...

Artistic Time Zero from the Impossible Project - this scan taken within a couple of hours of the shot, and matched as closely as possible to the colours on the original Polaroid. It looks quite different seven months later, I'll wait a little longer and share the re-scan results later this year.

'autumnsongs' is a series of Polaroids taken in the fall of 2009. Each photo has an associated musical accompaniment (listed below).

autumnsongs track 15:

artist: kristin hersh

title: flooding

album: N/A

I didn't do this for any of the other photos in the series, but here are the lyrics to Kristin's amazing song. You can read more about it and listen to it here: www.kristinhersh.com/flooding

"i can pinpoint the moment you closed your eyes

and said yes to the flooding

like melting you shrugged off the clothes of your life

and, well, i hope you remind me it's here

at twice the speed

hungering

for someone who left in half the time

fuzzy

fumbling

that thirst is gone

we're alone

a parking lot plea

begging

for a future you need"

-- Kristin Hersh, Flooding

I have done a few of these now (emulsion transfers on 600 style film), and I really like it. I plan to do lots more of these :)
